Forging A Legacy

By Vye

Hail, Elyrians!

Caspian is back from a visit to our friends at Improbable, reinvigorated and resolute! The bold adventure he began years ago is taking real shape. Many friends have joined this journey and it is with your support that we continue down the path less traveled toward our prize. It will not be short. It will not be easy. We will be tested. But we are fearless. The only true test of courage is the last one. How are we faring?

Improbable's SpatialOS enters Alpha

Our partner, Improbable, announced their Alpha for SpatialOS this week! We are among a handful of companies already utilizing the technology in extremely significant ways. As has been previously talked about, SpatialOS is a platform for third parties to build online, virtual worlds. The focus on game engines like Unreal (what we are using) and a seamlessly scalable server-side means that indie studios like Soulbound can save a huge amount of time and resources on the MMO part and focus instead on the RPG part.

Also in the announcement is a partnership with Google, called the SpatialOS Games Innovation Program. This is another huge boon for small and indie studios and you can read all about it in their press release. It's big news, and has already been covered by TechCrunch and Wired. We are excited to be working with Improbable and hope you all are excited about this announcement too!

Biomes Revealed

On December 12th we did a live Q&A on Twitch about the Biomes of Chronicles of Elyria. There were a lot of really excellent questions posed by the community in this reddit thread. For those of you that missed it, or just like to hear the sound of our voices, you can watch the recording with chat feed on Twitch.tv for a limited time, or on our YouTube channel forever.

I'm sure someone has already put this on a wiki page somewhere, but the list of Biomes that Souzou read during the Q&A is:

  • Alpine Forest
  • Arid Desert
  • Deciduous Temperate Forest
  • Evergreen Temperate Forest
  • Grass and Shrub Savannah
  • Grasslands Savannah
  • Grassland Steppe
  • Lower Montane Forest
  • Mangrove
  • Monsoon Forest
  • Rocky Mountain Temperate Steppe
  • Semi-Arid Desert
  • Shrublands
  • Shrub Steppe
  • Swamp Wetlands
  • Taiga
  • Tree and Shrub Savannah
  • Tropical Rainforest
  • Tropical Wetlands
  • Tundra
  • Wetlands
  • Woodland Savannah

Additional biomes that are totally unique to the world of Elyria may be added, so don't take this as an immutable list, okay?

Now, I want us to do the Q&As on a more regular basis now that Production has begun. We will announce them here on our website and on social media, so follow us on twitter and Facebook! What topic do you want to know about next? I was thinking Tribes...

#ElyriaOnEarth Contest

The entries keep rolling in on our twitter contest! Some are the beautiful landscapes you imagine in Elyria, some are how you imagine your adventures, some are showing love to cult favorites such as pine cones or melons. We are enjoying the submissions quite a lot, so keep it up! There's still plenty of time - just tweet to @SoulboundStudio with #ElyriaOnEarth by January 15th to enter for a chance to win! There is no limit to the number of entries, and winners will be announced on January 18th.

Exposition on the Exposition Store

We've been talking about the store update for the last few weeks and what it will include, when it will drop, and what you can look forward to. The team had a frank discussion about the Exposition Store as a part of our quality review and it's important to share the outcome of that. As I hope you all know, we want to be transparent with our community and that means admitting to our mistakes as well as celebrating our successes.

Everyone is hungry for details about the game mechanics, settlement selection, and exposition in particular because this is where the idea of Chronicles of Elyria starts to feel tangible. Well, as tangible as a virtual world can be. Therefore the items in the Exposition Store represent the first 'real' things a player can own and thusly the role a player will assume in the game. More than just virtual goods, these items are part of your identity.

As we worked on filling out the items initially available in the Exposition Store, we kept running into issues where we could provide some information, but not enough to feel that we were providing the level of detail you would want in order to make the decision to spend your EP on it. What's more, is that the items we were working on--the ones you can see here--are not all the items that will be available. There is a risk that players would spend all their EP on these items, thinking that it's all that would be available, and then be frustrated when new things are added that they would have got had they only known. While we could say 'Hey, this isn't everything, we'll add more stuff later', then folks would want to hold onto some EP reserves but this actually causes some trouble too. First, the amount to reserve would be uncertain and I can't imagine adding additional ambiguity would be a boon at this stage in the game. Second, we may create incentives on available items in order to balance the initial economy and, if we don't know roughly how many are reserved, then we can't know how the balance is playing out. Third, if someone was sitting on some EP reserves only to find that the items added later are not to their liking and they really wanted something that's no longer available, aggravation is a thing that will happen. Lastly, not knowing the full scope of everything available will reduce confidence in the items you do purchase and making you question your decisions is not something we feel good about introducing!

The result is that the team has decided, and I support them, to delay the Exposition Store until we feel confident that you all would be confident in spending your EP. We don't know what we don't know, therefore we don't yet have an expected date for when it will be released.

'Forgive my inquest, Vye, but are you hazarding to elucidate that the Exposition Store is not demoted to a mere subsequent release but will, in fact, remain in such a state of limbo for some undetermined amount of time?' you ask with a faint flutter of your eyelashes.

Yes, and it's not because we didn't make the Exposition Store. It's because it's not yet good enough. It's not ready and we should have realized this earlier--probably before we said we were making it but, like I said, we sometimes make mistakes. This mistake not only took up a lot of development time that could have been spent on the game, but also set expectations with the community that will undoubtedly lead to disappointment. Disappointment is not a habit we want to get into, so I hope that you will understand that we are suspending the Exposition Store release for good reasons: quality, integrity, and compassion. Chronicles of Elyria must be a game of quality. Soulbound Studios must be a studio that acts with integrity. As a community, both you and I, must demonstrate compassion toward one another. This is how we will deliver on the promises that have captured our collective imagination and drive the team every single day.

Now, we are not saying it'll be radio silence about items or prices for the Exposition Store. We'll reveal what we can when we can, like everything else. The items will still be steaming from the heat of the oven when you hear about them! Cool? Cool.

Is It Getting Crowded In Here?

Even though the Exposition Store is not coming out now, we are still updating the store in a release dropping soon. Something you'll see when this comes out, in addition to the new pledge packages, is a server selector for the packages with settlements (Baronies, Counties, Duchies, and Kingdoms). We are nearing the point where we will put caps on the number of players able to begin managing a region. Layaway has been extremely popular for reserving pricing and rewards for the high-tier packages and we are already anticipating 5 Kingdoms on the NA-E server. We are going to be limiting the number of Kingdoms per server to 5 starting with this release. The exact numbers for Duchies, Counties, and Baronies are being worked on by the designers and I will reveal those caps just as soon as they are determined, so no need to panic. No one is going to lose their already-purchased title and lands.

However, I want to make something super-duper clear about Layaway of pledge packages with settlements--you do not own it until you pay off the full amount. This has been said before but, to be brutally explicit, if a server is at 4 paid-for Kingdoms and 2 people put a Kingdom on layaway, the first person to pay off their package gets the 5th spot. The other person will no longer be able to have that tier and we will work with them, if this situation even occurs, to get them settled on a new pledge package and convert any overpayments of that new tier to store credit. Please note that all the funds go directly to development of the game and we have a No Refund policy. So, please, buyer beware but know we will work with you if this situation occurs.

Fine Feathered Fiery Friends

We've hit another stretch goal and likely our last before the deadline. The pet Phoenix is now going to be available as a 6th pet option for backers at the Beast Master tier and above. The other 5 options are pretty cool though. They are:

Fox

Adorable and sly, a great companion for the dexterous. Foxes have an excellent sense of smell and hearing, allowing them to effectively scavenge for small rodents and other creatures for their owners. You may also benefit from it's keen intuition that can warn you of nearby dangers, but they may become overwhelmed in towns. They also get along great with dogs!

Lemur

Impress your friends with this long-tailed fur ball. Lemurs are friendly and inquisitive creatures with dexterous hands for climbing and grabbing. Expert climbers, they are able to climb trees to gather fruit or nuts that they will probably share with you as they ride on your back. Be sure to keep a good eye on it in town or it might grab things it oughtn't.

Shrubland Wildcat

In tall grass, you might need a bell to find it. With regal bearing and cool demeanor, the shrubland wildcat is a dispassionate yet loyal companion. Able to silently stalk its prey, it can catch more than enough to feed its owner on the road. As a city pet, they may become bored without enough space to keep active.

Leffit

These playful pets rarely roam far from their owner. The diminutive leffit is a scale-covered creature that tends to stay close to its master. It may ride on your shoulder or lounge around your possessions. It generally has a playful nature, but is sensitive to subtle aspects of people nearby and will change color in response. A common pet to see in court. Less so by adventurers.

Conifer Rat

They can curl up into what resembles a pine cone! The rarely-observed conifer rat is usually found in forests where it can feed on pine needles and hide from predators by rolling itself up to look like a pine cone. They are shy and prefer to ride in their owner's pockets or pouches. They are often trained for reconnaissance and infiltration due to their cleverness and natural camouflage.

Before I showed you all the adorable pets you can have, I mentioned a deadline for stretch goals so let me expand on that a little bit. Thanks to your abundant support, you locked in Angelica's Tears, Wards of the State, and Religious Statues as launch features almost right away. Since the store launched in October, you've increased the stretch goals to Gambling/Gaming, Pet/Mount Customization, Tunneling, and now the Pet Phoenix. Locking these in means they will be available at Launch. To ensure we have enough time to develop and test these goals fully, we won't be committing to new goals after December 2016. As a result, any stretch goals we don't hit by the end of the year will be added to the game after launch.

I know what you really want to know, though: Will pledge packages still be available?

Yes, we will continue to sell the pledge packages, probably until Launch for some packages. Not only does it provide us additional funding, but it allows folks who are just hearing about Chronicles of Elyria to join in the fun and enthusiasm exhibited in our most awesome of communities!

What's That On Your Head?

In this last sprint, the focus was still about getting more of our work into the playable game. There's still a couple things to fix to get the Female model in (she's not got any clothes right now) but we've got a new model to introduce and I love it so much! Meet the Dryas Elk!

Yes, this is the model, not the concept art.

This is the concept art.

We are turning our attention back to character creation and one aspect of that is hairstyles! We've got concepts for our next set ready for modeling so expect to see the modeled results in a future update. Since you all are on the bleeding edge of news about the game, I thought you might appreciate seeing where those hairstyles are starting.

Ultimately, we aim to provide a generous selection of hairstyles for different tribes and regions so this is the tip of the iceberg. Once you are in-game, visiting a barber will offer you additional chances to experiment with new looks or even start a new trend for all the courtiers to adopt!

I understand that it isn't really my place to complain, but why are hairstyles gender oriented?

I plan to play in the north with long hair, and I wouldn't mind my man bun being as ornate with flowers as some of these women, especially around festival time or during some sort of ceremony.

taylonrules - 2 months ago

I'm really liking the model for the elk! I'm glad you softened it up a bit from the concept art! Wouldn't want to hunt something that was just skin and bones.

Bludragon - 2 months ago

Just wondering... All the female hairstyles are lovely, but mostly not my style. Will it be possible to use men's hairstyles on girls too?

hmm most probable cenario is this are only some hairstiles (set #1)

LorenzW - 2 months ago

Hmmm, hey Vye... I just noticed this.... Am I missing something because I can't find it, or is this not out yet?

Something you'll see when this comes out, in addition to the new pledge packages, is a server selector for the packages with settlements (Baronies, Counties, Duchies, and Kingdoms).

Also, something specific now that I've come back after a while. The modeled Dryas Elk looks off to me in these specific ways:

  1. The neck is short compared to the concept, and pushes forward too much.
  2. The legs of the model are short and too thick compared to the art, they are also placed further back against the side rather than the front.
  3. The antlers feel like they are plopped onto the skull, rather than grown out of it.
  4. Chin and head tilt further back in the model, those heavy antlers would probably make the neck muscles strong and the elk would pull it's head forward.

I hope I'm not too nitpicky for ya!

Every time I read the Thread title I picture someone forging documents to make themselves powerful and creating a legacy.

Jinnn - 3 months ago

I hope you guys will have fine tune details for character creations, just like what Korea MMOs excel at, say for example Black Dessert !

Mordakai - 3 months ago

@Vye Awesome update, keep them coming!

Kalfax - 3 months ago

i hope you guys add some awesome viking-ish haircuts for males, and possible samurai hairstyles (oriental ones etc)

Cronester - 3 months ago

interesting read. so the hairstyles makes me wonder if my character ages I expect him to get bold or at least grey. in that aspect I also expect hair to grow and therefore regular haircuts. how does this work?

gremory - 3 months ago

I don't know about the Dryas Elk's model, it has some differences with the concept art. for instance the model looks like he is fat and doesn't do much exercise, and in the concept art he looks strong, like some thing I don't want to fight bare handed.

LorenzW - 3 months ago
@gremory:

So the concept art is a wild Dryas, and the screenshot is a pet! :D

However, I would have to say that the extra weight does lend itself to making the Dryas look a little out of shape... or perhaps more like a goat than an elk?

Given that the model is on a blank canvas, I would like to see it within the world before making any definitive statements. Perhaps the extra bulk is to help protect it from the environment (ie cold). Or, it might be better seen next to a Mann or Womann?

Either way, it's still pretty stunning.

Ewyla - 3 months ago

I understand these hairstyles are only the tip of the iceberg but I would really like there to be hairstyles longer than the neck base or shoulders for women, unlike what we usually see in games.

Hallowfest - 3 months ago

I would love to see short hair for the women who are either militia or adventurers. Oh an beads in small braids for more southern/coastal people as well. Keep up the great work! :D

Aionion - 3 months ago

I really wish there would be certain cost involved with different hair styles (as is in RL) so poor folk would settle for "cheaper" hairstyles :)

LorenzW - 3 months ago

Amazing, and without reading the commentary, I have a few questions.

First, with the cap on the number of kingdoms (etc) available to lock, will you start splitting servers further once the caps are reached, or will we be restricted to choosing the "next best" server for our location.

IE NA-E is basically capped for kings already, does that mean the next king must go to NA-W automatically or would SBS consider an NA-Central server? (I'm thinking specifically about Ping issues here)

Second, will we simply be given a pet choice 1/6 or will we be able to purchase with EP like the mounts, either singly or breeding pairs?

My last question is in regards to the next stretch goal. While it may sound greedy to some, I would like to put in two cents and PLEASE request the Sensory map be added at launch even if the full stretch goal is not completed by Dec 31. My reason is this: I am legally Deaf. The sensory map would be a boon to people like myself so that we can more fully participate in and enjoy the game to its fullest. Besides that, it is a mechanic that benefits the whole of the Elyrian player populace.

I'm not sure how much is needed to make that happen, but it would be wonderful. Maybe half the amount? Reach $1,900,000 for the SM and dig/bury takes the other half?

Fearasuma - 3 months ago
@LorenzW:

Not to sound rude, but I don't think SBS would bother to make a new server just to accommodate someone's ping. At best, you're looking at moving to NA-W.

Also, they said that they will not likely hit the next stretch goal.

LorenzW - 3 months ago
@Fearasuma:

I am on the west coast of Canada, so I'm already dedicated to the NA-W server. I was thinking of others, and it wasn't just a question of Ping, but of the cap.

The NA servers, as of today have 9 of the 10 total kingdoms allowed already either paid or on layaway. What happens to King/Queen #11? Do they get forced to APAC or EU, depending on which coast they are closer to? Or does SBS allow a third server to accomodate 15 total Player kingdoms and allow the current ones to choose which server they go to (NA-W, NA-E or new server?)

I am also aware that the next Stretch goal is likely not reachable by Dec 31st, unless we get a wave of Christmas presents through in the next couple weeks of course. ;) I was making a request on behalf of a subgroup of gamers who like - like myself - have other RL sensory issues: Please add the sensory map as a sub stretch goal (if possible, I am aware that it may not be) for the sake of us who need extra adaptations. We want to participate in games and the sensory map would give us the RL leg up we need in this kind of game in order to be on an even keel with the rest of the population. This is not out of greed in any way, as the sensory map would benefit every player, but SBS is keen on being equitable to all and compassionate. It's those ideals that I am appealing to.

The digging and burying feature could potentially benefit everyone, but the sensory map will be a boon to the immersion for everyone that wants to use it, thus is a great (and key IMO) feature that would be awesome to include at launch. If it has to wait for later, well great, I'll wait, but the worst they can say is NO and then I'll have at least asked and not be left wondering. ;)

The iterations of the store is one of the things I've noticed that gives me subdued optimism about this game. The devs are more interested in deploying something right than deploying on time. I'm increasingly confident we won't be seeing the game at the end of 2017, but I'm also increasingly confident that when we do, it will rock our socks off.

cumberbuckle - 3 months ago
@mightyfish:

This expresses my thoughts exactly. I would not be at all bothered if the release of the game was pushed into 2018 (or even 2019) because I'd know the team was doing its best to release something of true quality.

Hallowfest - 3 months ago
@cumberbuckle:

If you go back and look at the first video/screenshots vs current they've had pretty noticeable improvements. I'm confident they can at least start one of the alphas next year. If they have to push back the full release then thats fine. I want this game to be amazing, and I have no doubts it will reach that expectation. I've already been banned from talking about this game in my groups because I've convinced like 10-20 different people in following/buying this game XD I'm terrible lol

All the female hair styles would look fine if you are a baroness or a lady in waiting etc.. but I dont see any of these other than perhaps the one with flowers being a peasant/common folk hairstyle.

Will your Elk's have different racks? Or will it all be the same? I think it would be cool showing off your trophy rack from an elk and not just be the same as Bob's down the street

So many things to get excited about! Thank you guys for another brilliant update! I love that the pets will have different roles to suit different people/tasks! Although, deciding on my first CoE pet is now going to be even harder! ;) I'm a bit of a pet-a-holic (ig and irl lol) so anything animal related gets me super excited! Loving the Elk too and can't wait to see more of Elyrias beautiful beasts! Hairstyles are looking great too! I'm also a fan of the longer styles, but waist length maximum and I'd be super happy! also.. as a female dreadhead, I'd love to see dreadlocks for females ig too! pretty pleease! <3

Bardas - 3 months ago

I'm so glad I decided to swing by and check to see how things are coming along... I backed during Kickstarter and then basically forgot about CoE. I dropped in yesterday to catch up on the news and was so impressed with things that I upgraded my pledge to Brew Master. Whoo! I'm really excited about what's cooking with CoE and really appreciate the approach you're taking with EP.

Orashna - 3 months ago

Thank you so much for the great update!

I don't mind waiting on the EP store at all, I would much rather get a chance to view all the things available before making a decision. I absolutely would have made an impulse buy as soon as it opened and assuredly had some buyer's remorse after any things were added.

And hey, Expo is some time off, so no rush! Focus on fleshing out this amazing game first!

There's a downside to this - in terms of performance it's a far heavier cost if done well. There are also considerations around how your hair will fit around your clothing etc. We've all seen poor games with zero collision, hair flowing through your cloak etc, which spoils the immersion too.

I think the styles they will mainly go for will be quite creative (as you can see), but without too many "free flowing" bits for physics work.

All I can say though is that the end result is awesomeness

Elfseeker - 3 months ago
@Oracle:

someone really need to create a fix for this. Hair is something every character has. In every game. Some to overflowing. so the gaming industry STILL not having a way to deal with long, loose hair on female characters short of having it ignore clothing and armor and whatnot is downright disgraceful. I would not be surprised if we'll still be seeing hair 'intersecting' with collars and such far into the 2060's...

Hey Dev give us enough time.... i used the layaway because i need moretime to earn money. We have now Christmas, a lot of presents has to be bought and familis visit. You dont rally whant to tell me that after i paid the half way: " sry we ar out of stock" so finally the layaway dont make sens in this way....

Still good job and take the time for the shop ;)

LorenzW - 3 months ago
@Sunny River:

Since the cap is at 5 kingdoms and each kingdom has average of 8 duchies, half (+1 for the king) can be reserved, and each duchy has anywhere between 8 and 64 counties and each county is populated so that the county with 64 settlements will only have about 100 population and those with the fewest will have as many as 750.

Will there be longer hairstyles? Perhaps longer that below the shoulders? I really want a female style that is styled at the top but is let loose at the bottom.

Vye said, "The result is that the team has decided, and I support them, to delay the Exposition Store until we feel confident that you all would be confident in spending your EP. We don't know what we don't know, therefore we don't yet have an expected date for when it will be released."

While I am disappointed in this I feel it is the right decision. I have been looking forward to all we could buy from the KS. So this is sad to hear. However, Vye did address many of my concerns about releasing an incomplete store. How am I to know what to buy when one, I don't know all I need to know about it and two, is there something I want more coming out later? The fact the store prices will be going up only intensifies this problem for me.

And in all honesty, I don't NEED to buy the items now. If they would just keep adding partial lists to the ones we have now like for the housing and other items, that would be perfect for me. The ones they have locked down and are willing to share with us. And make it like it is now that we can just see them and not actually buy them. that is what I have been looking forward to more than anything.

those 5 biomes were missing to help me sort the biomes especially the polar desert, Alpine Tundra and montane steppe.

I have to admit as a player who wants to be an adventurer I am considering changing my playstyle. I just have a weakness for lizards and in general all of the pets are simply breathtaking. I can see that each pet will be suited for different character.

That brings up a question (that is probably already answered elsewhere)

How hard is it for pet to die ? unconscious state ? Can all of these pets live in all biomes or do they have snow/desert/tropical variation?

How capable is the AI that will control the pet or how much of a control do you have?

What if I want to start as a ward?

I think that since you paid fot it (P2W!!! ...Just kidding) you wont lose them even if they die. Maybe a respawn timer (24 or 12 hrs, maybe a week?) or a revival method (Going to the church and praying or something?).

Biomes will have impact on the pets behaviour or appearance. I remember reading about artic foxes or the likes.

Wards are awesome but nothing is known about specifics...

Wards are awesome but nothing is known about specifics...

actually, the shop says "can be lost or killed" which implies, that those pets are gone for good if they die, just like mounts or any other starting bonus. nothing is permanent. if you want a new pet, go breed one before yours is dead. the only one that does not apply for that rule is the phoenix, as it will revive itself after death. Nothing is known about a way to finally kill a phoenix or if its possible to steal a phoenix... imo, a creature that is fire itself cant really be catched and therefore not be stolen, but no idea how SbS thinks about that.

So many people want info on this. The things related to the soulborn (correct name?) engine are all big incognitos. People have bein waiting for it since the beggining but no dice.

Agree, too. Further information about NPC AI or Scripts and their system would really be appreciated. If we were told how those scripts are going to work and be given some examples, we might start scripting ourselves. The sooner we can, the more bugs might be ironed out and the better and more complex our scripts can get. Obviously, we need to know further details like how hunger system or sleep system or crafting work, before we can start scripting... but any more details about AI would be great.

More details for the justice system would be nice, too. There are still people that fear it might turn into a killfest and be quite impossible to go out in the woods alone for hunting/gathering/exploring due to griefers that just play to annoy others. I, personally feel, just because of the worldsize, this wont really be a huge problem... Hopefully, there is enough space to evade the hopefully small amount of griefers. What we already know should be enough to deal with usual deviant players that actually want to play the game, i just wonder about those, that dont care about their life/soul and just want to annoy others at all costs. Those players exist in most games, so i guess we will have them here, too. More information are always nice.

Great update and loving the look on some of those hairstyles! Just hoping you guys will give a realistic "long" hairstyle unlike other games where it's either shoulder length or all the way to the floor!

Antaryon - 3 months ago

Thank you for the update Vye, and kudos for the backbone you guys have, I respect you all even more for it and it gives me confidence that the game will be what we all desire.

Good Call on the store and ep futere.

DaTarian - 3 months ago

I am so excited by all of this. And the Elk is absolutely beautiful. I think the Exposition store postponement is the best idea, as I have been wondering about it as well.

I hope they do some exciting courtly updoes for the male characters. I am always frustrated that female character hairstyle and fashion is so much better designed than male. The concept art here shows that trend.

Dreads! Are we gonna see some Bob Marley characters? At least a jack sparrow or two?

I have voiced my concerns about updates and the Exposition store before and i will in the future if needs arise but for now you dispelled them all, Thank you.

Great Update!

I think it is a very good decision on the EP Store as it should have almost everything that SBS wants in the store before going live with it. I do agree that some people will get unhappy when that shiny new toy gets released later in the game development yet they have spent most of their EP funds.

Love reading up on the Pets, such decisions to make on which pet for me and the Elk looks great.

Dr.Quick - 3 months ago

First off awesome update thank you all for the work that you put into these statuses and the honesty that you give us when doing so.

On that note I say without any kind of disappointment that I believe the delay to be a detriment to the project via a different perspective on the exact reasons that you gave.

I do not think it's a negative thing for the community to spend some or all of their current EP only to find out more interesting more appropriate things are appearing later on. Ultimately what that does is it encourages us all to, yes, that's right buy additionally EP which without more exposure to a larger user base is the only way that the stretch goal of 2 million dollars would be reached by the December 31st deadline.

That being said this is also not a bad thing if you have talked about it and decided that reaching the stretch goal should be delayed. As snowballing features, especially ones that touch upon almost every aspect of a player's interaction with the world, do require a lot of attention.

Not saying you don't want or need the money, just saying that maybe getting it without the added pressure from a "want not need" feature will be best for everyone.

Plus if things work out you could always just surprise us with it next Christmas anyway.

cjmarsh - 3 months ago

Thanks for the write-up, very cool to see all the new info, even the stuff just starting to get into development. I for one am glad the EP store was put to rest, it made me somewhat nervous and hesitant to buy any more in it's current state. Still, having seen a glimpse of what the intention was I'm eager to see the final product.

The transparency and openness about their mistakes or inaccurate predictions is one of the primary reasons I have faith in this studio. Not many companies have the backbone to flat out say "hey, we screwed something up. We know what went wrong and we're not going to let it go unfixed." Most of the time, it's some PR spin filled with buzzwords and "positive reinforcement" or some crap. SBS just goes "Crap. That was our fault. Sorry about that; we're on it right now."

I can't describe how refreshing it is for a company to just man up and face the music like that. It inspires respect.

Agreed. It's a pity more studios don't try this approach - they're understandably afraid of the community backlash, but a general rule of thumb is that if you start out treating your consumers as people, they're going to (for the most part) do the same. Treat your customers as numbers, or as consumers to be baited and placated, and they're going to return that disrespect and reification tenfold. Trion/XLG, as Antelino's pointed out just above, is a great example of the latter.

The delay of the expo store is yet another reassuring move on SbS's part, showing they consider and care primarily about quality over time or profit. A less scrupulous producer might simply plough ahead with staged releases, knowing that customers will both dislike having been tricked into spending their EP early and still, in many cases, opt to spend when the later tiers come out because they want the stuff. Presenting the shop late but with open access to all purchaseables is the right choice.

Loving the look of the elk model - it's not different like the previous creature showcases, but then, not everything has to be. And that is a lovely looking animal.

On the topic of animals, though... I feel that phoenixes are something of a mixed blessing, and I'm sure this is circulating in amongst you at the studio as well: Having reached this stretch goal, there's likely going to be noticeably less interest in other pet choices. The choices are all interesting/appealling in their own right, but the phoenix has powerful novelty value and a unique and irreplaceably appealling utility: immortality. Is this an issue? It doesn't break anything, but it does mean there will be quite a lot of phoenixes floating around come expo/launch time.

Last of all: I doubt I'll get an answer here, but like everyone else with an interest in pets/other animals in the came, I am rabidly curious: will phoenixes be able to breed? Non-breedable immortal birds makes more sense than breedable, but a high mortality rate amongst infants or extremely rare/uncommon breed rate/long maturation and vulnerability to the elements or other environmental influences might serve to balance them out otherwise.

I couldn't agree more, a prime example of what not to do is Trion with the new AA server launches this week. Been an absolute train wreck and their base hates the BS they try to feed them.

Keep up the amazing work SBS, we are all behind you!

Hoped to see the Dryas Elk keep its more alien look, its face in the concept art was very starwars, but now it looks like reindeer.. I guess the holiday spirit contaminated the studio.
