Guilds/Organizations/Orders/Groups

Guild Name: Alnwick Apothecary Society

Guild Master:

Guild Motto:

Guild Goals:

Within the confines of the sanitarium, a group of like minded individuals formed the Alnwick Apothecary Society. This group shared their knowledge, pooling its resources to further understand the human body, its weaknesses… and how to overcome them. With the research on the illnesses, what caused them, and each path one may take to prevent such atrocities from everyday life. Of course they got a nod of approval by Andreas, who occasionally eyes their research, making sure it is at least accurate to a point. From this they used what was available to run tests of their own, what plants helped to alleviate some form of ailment… but it never seemed to be just one plant, there also was a need for a catalyst. So they tried brewing the herbs into teas and adding them as spices for meals. But for now… the tests are just beginning... But that is just on the body.

Their research also expands towards the mind and all of its mysteries. The mind of a mann is intricate, why do some skills stick, while others slip through their fingers? This society is taking it upon themselves to figure out the quirks and coding of the mind. But first to understand the mind, one must inspect the mind. Some attempts have been made using trephination, as a still living and active brain will reveal more than a cold dead brain from a cadaver. Sometimes it is as simple as to talk through events and letting the afflicted person vent out their inner most demons for the world to judge, though it is just their doctor hearing them out. But not everything ventured is something gained, and there are no rewards without risks despite how subtle it may be…

Military of Alnwick: The Infernal Knights

“It was said that when the great fire that was caused when Daemon was destroyed, there were members of Mannkind who tried to fight it. Their eyes were burnt asunder for trying to fight the forces of nature, and they were engulfed alive within their suits of armor. Though this may be a legend from a time long ago, the Infernal Knights wear their lineage with pride.” - Maizel Crowley

Motto: Blessed be those reborn in flame.

These knights come from many walks of life… but one thing is for certain. They have never seen defeat. Nor has anyone living seen their faces after they’ve joined Andreas’s service. Clad in full plate, they seem to not show fear, or any emotion when it comes to orders from one of the Crowley family. Though they show more regard to Andreas himself, they respect or at least acknowledge the whole Crowley family. The Knights were originally a band of knights designated to protect the healers on the field, but primarily vanguard for the Count of Osthelia. Then Andreas had sunken his metaphorical claws into them, introducing maelstrom into their daily rations by boiling their meat in it. On top of their injectors for in combat. Under their armor, there is some hidden contraption is housed that slowly feeds doses of Maelstrom into their system. In times of peace it is a slow occasional feed. But during combat it is more active, and quite a bit more strength into to dose. Some however were pushed to the brink, where the drug had taken over, and the darker side of of his Knights were shown… which led to rumors of his knights being monsters.

This only fed to the power of Andreas’ words… weighted with the word of his knights behind them. Only Morchant would understand the usage… and symptoms… but this was not something he would speak out against it, as Andreas supplied his own private fix of the substance. The bone spurs that had formed from continual use of series 3 of Maelstrom was hidden by the full plate armor. The negative effects were lessened or at least lowered with the newer form of the drug so they still looked and acted as mann would from a distance. Though up close it was likely a more devious and beast like guise of mann. They were like devils marching on the Crowley order. Mann made devils really… where they were monstrous in strength, and ignored pain and wounds that would make many if not most people stagger and stop. Villette Morchant, a former Maelstrom user, would look upon these knights and see herself in them. Emotionless, and marching mindlessly towards their next objective. No right to say no… as they marched through waves of enemies, suffering minimal to no losses. She herself may get hurt but always lived… but this was a whole military structure of her… all powered by the same juice.

The survivors of the Infernal Knights note their numbers being in the high thousands… but to be truthful, it is barely even two thousand knights. The full plate is sleek, and almost mechanical in nature the way it’s put onto the knights making them look more like constructs than people. All the while, carrying the banners and standards of Andreas, and the Crowley family. They are equipped with a large variety of gear, ranging from tower shields and long swords, to claymores and flails. Some accounts even included someone using claw like weapons to shred a mann despite his armor. While not being of service, the Infernal Knights tend to be stationed in five various locations. Four of which are forts, that hold strategic value and require a presence… The fifth place is minutes away from Andreas’ manor in Alnwick in a barracks. Even if the town was besieged there would be plenty of Infernal to swarm in from all over the county. Even so there are rumors that the Andreas have even been in training runs with Company of the Crow and performed many drills to better serve their lord, and his family. How much weight there is to those rumors, has yet to be seen, as even the soldier who’ve seen an Infernal Knight in person, doesn’t speak of them lightly, if at all.

“Nothing strikes sheer terror and unease into the hearts of men that the sight of the banner of the Crimson Wings. The white background contrasts the sheer black crow, outstretched wings coated with the blood of the enemy. These men are the men of legends. All have tasted battle, been bloodied in war, endured the rigors of training, and had the doctrine of honor, courage, and loyalty ingrained in their minds from day one. Waves upon waves of enemy forces can smash into the Crimson Wings front lines, and they will be tossed backwards through the sheer determination of these forces. It is said that wherever the Crimson Wings march, the crows fly overhead, knowing that their namesake will provide a feast through their ferocity.”

Historians tell of a battle that raged ages ago. The names have become muddied in the lost tomes as they pass from the written word to the spoken tongue. None know the reason that stared the conflict, or the names of either side that raged for two years. All that remains is the story that came to pass on the final night of the siege. Forces faced each other across a blood soaked, battle scorched field. This site will be known in the future as the Capital City of Alnwick, in the County of Osthelia. Crows wheeled overhead, ready to begin their feasting. Black smoke and ash from funeral pyres stained the air. Neither soldier had seen the sun in ages, or smelled air that didn’t stink from the dead and dying. New recruits may have composed some ranks of either, but every single man that stood there had been bloodied in the war. No one was a stranger to violence now.

The vanguard of the defending army stood ready, their force alone facing the enemy. It was a token force, not even half the size of the opposing force. The main body of the defending army lay ready behind the castle walls. It was a foolish strategy, vastly different from their enemy. They attacked as one massive body, no need for a vanguard force or cavalry. Like a tidal wave crashing against a cliff face. Eventually the ocean wears away the rock. The Lord of the defenders held to traditional tactics, and only the will and determination of the men had allowed them to hold the opposing force at bay. They were outnumbered, and should they fail, they would be slaughtered to a man. The vanguard were brothers in arms, together from the very beginning of their training. They had all lost brothers in this war, and slowly the rage had been building inside them. They wanted revenge, to make sure their brothers didn’t die in vain. Bloodlust coursed through the vanguard now, and tension hummed through the ranks, and their weapons were ready for the next taste of blood.

Trumpets rent in the air, and the battle began. The vanguard surged together into a circle of shields and swords. The enemy force converged around them in a storm of violence and death. The battle raged for hours, and slowly the vanguard began to lose more brothers. The commander couldn’t ignore it any longer, he refused to lose any more men. And the enemy would pay with their own blood. He let out a bestial roar that his men instantly echoed, and deep within the fought with reserves of strength and ferocity that they didn’t know they had possessed. The true slaughter began then, and sudden fear ran through the spines of the enemy force. Their commander called a halt and reformed their ranks. The terror grew as they watched the vanguard force in front of them.

The only intact from the pages of history reads thus, “The vanguard stood in front, naked blades in their hands, gleaming scarlet from their enemies. A mere tithe of five hundred men, stood unflinching in the face of certain doom. The enemy force of over fifty thousand felt terror as they observed the small group. Their white cloaks shredded and billowing in the wind behind them, stained red. The crows wheeled overhead, and their calls seemed to favor the vanguard. The vanguard commander stepped forward, and raised his blood covered blade into the air, and the men screamed in defiance before charging. The crimson stained cloaks flew behind them, the crows cried out eagerly, cheering on their brothers below. The enemy watched as death was borne towards them, carried by crimson wings.”

Post 3

Greetings all, I am Garrett Hawke Crowley, Commander of the Crimson Wings and Personal Sword to my brother Count Andreas Crowley. If you wish to join the Crimson Wings you are under my direct command. We are based within the City of Alnwick, and our jurisdiction ends at the borders of the County of Osthelia. The Crimson Wings are the main military and justice force in Osthelia, we answer the call of our Duke Polite and Duchess Silvia in Sanctaphandri, and if necessary, we will provide a force in the defense of the Kingdom of Ashland. However, our first loyalty is to our Count Crowley. His ingenuity will help provide a way for us to truly be a force to be reckoned with. Training will be fierce and rigorous, and only the best will make it to the position of honor. Honor, courage, and loyalty are necessary traits in any recruit, and I will not tolerate those who break their oath. If you believe that you have what it takes, then come and speak with me, or my Second-in-Command, Zathros Tirosa. You have the opportunity to join the best, and we will be just like the men in legend.

The Crimson Wings, are the primary military and peace keeping force within Osthelia and the capital of Alnwick. In peace time, they patrol the borders of the county and enforce justice where necessary. In times of war, they are the shock troops. Utilizing brute strength and sheer ferocity, along with their discipline they are able to truly sow destruction in the enemy forces. The Commander rides into battle with the forces, not content to stay behind with those making decisions. Commander Garrett Hawke Crowley, serves as Personal Sword to Count Andreas Crowley, serving as his champion and speaking in his voice as needed. Vice Commander Zathros Tirosa will be in charge of the training of new forces and assigning them where necessary, final decisions will be enforced by Garrett Hawke Crowley. See the ranking system below to see where you start.

Raven Initiate: This is where all new recruits will begin, your days will consist of training and education into the true matter of how a knight needs to act in times of peace and war. All Initiates will become proficient with sword and shield, and bow and arrow. After a certain time, once you have passed final assessments, you will move on to the next level: Crow Acolyte

Crow Acolyte: After achieving this level, Acolytes will be assigned to senior knights to act as their squires. Unless deemed necessary by the Commander, they will not participate in main battles. In times of war, they will remain as a county defense force while the main army is dispatched.. The knight they are assigned to will act as their mentor. If they wish to become trained in a certain type of weapon other than the typical sword and shield and bow and arrow then this is the opportunity to do so. Acolytes will be housed in groups of 15, and one will be assigned as Captain of their groups, known as The Flock. Acolytes will serve terms within the City of Yager, under the authority of Baron Alastair Bjorne. There they will serve as a force to maintain law and order in the city. As an Acolyte the individuals must distinguish themselves in acts that will either benefit Osthelia, or perform an Act of Valor. Achieving these ends will allow an acolyte to eventually be promoted to the next level: Talon Knights

Talon Knights: If an Acolyte has been deemed worthy, then the Vice Commander will nominate those worthy to the Commander, who will present it to Count Crowley, and they will present it to Duke Polite. Upon his approval, you shall be knighted and be part of the main force, the Talon Knights. Granted all privileges and rights associated with the honor of the title. You will also have duties assigned in times of peace, including being a mentor to an Acolyte. Several Knights will be selected by Vice Commander to serve as Lieutenants and command a force in battle. Those who prove themselves worthy and beyond all matters of distinction can be granted a special title, as chosen by the Commander and Vice Commander. However this honor, is known to select few.

The training is rigorous and designed for the best, but to those that overcome, and rise above…you can be counted as the elite force, Talon Knights of the Crimson Wings

Dearest Mama,

I am sorry that it has taken me a bit of time to write. Please do not be cross with my tardiness in our correspondence. This letter should have reached you weeks ago, but since my arrival it has been work, work, work and when I finally get a bit of personal time to myself I feel the day’s rigorous activities having drained me completely of any energy I might have had to write my letters.

I have also attempted to see a bit more of the city of Alnwick, mainly the route I take to get back home. It is massive and always bustling even at night it seems, but I am still getting quite overwhelmed and turned around even now. Luckily, everyone seems nice and helpful to help me find where I am supposed to be. I eat well and feel safe with the guards patrolling the streets and have never felt frightened on my way home from working at the Sanitarium.

However, and mama, please do not worry overly much because I do work in a hospital for people that have fallen ill mentally. There was an incident where one of the patients became a little rough during a dementia episode, but luckily the scratches were treated immediately. Admittedly, I was in the wrong ward and it was entirely my fault because I did not heed the rules.

I am supposed to be more careful and to keep all the rules straight and I will do so diligently. It is for my own safety and I understand that now. I will be the best nurse, mama. You will be so proud of me and I shall continue to send money home to help you and the girls. I also have to tell you a bit of good news. I will have an opportunity to meet the Count tomorrow. It will be at Crowley’s Perch which is what the staff calls his office. He looks like a somber crow with a mask that he is never without when he makes his rounds at the different wards. He is the smartest mann I know and I do hope to be a faithful member of his staff.

I hope to write you soon enough. I am nervous of my meeting, but I will pray tonight and write first thing after the meeting and my shift is over. I promise.

Your devoted daughter,

Mina

The City of Woes, Alnwick

"For fools rush in where angels fear to tread." - Alexander Pope

In the Kingdom of Ashland, nestled along the County of Ostheila, where lies a tavern from a renovated stone cathedral that was not fully completed, but was renovated for the inn’s needs. This almost ivory looking building was named the Ivory Pawn since it has a single large tower in the heart of the hearth. They have a small store house out back, using the cheap birch wood for the door, while the insides are kept cool with the help of clay and stone. Just past the Ivory Pawn, there is a city known as Alnwick. It is a town known not for its manufacturing, nor for the trading of goods, but for the dark hope that lies in the namesake sanitarium of the city. Most of those who follow the king’s highway through the forest seek refuge in the Alnwick Sanitarium as a last resort to save themselves from terrible illness.

But some come seeking more. Some have heard of Alnwick, and the whispers of the dark rituals required to perform the healing in the sanitarium. Healers and surgeons arrive in droves to learn from the masters inside the sanitarium, though all but the most talented are refuted.

Alnwick Sanitarium sits atop the highest hill in town separated by the Wynith River that feeds the local farms with its tributaries. A stone path leads from the only bridge winding along the hillside up to the wrought iron gate of the entrance. The higher travelers climb, the more the pastures and farms give way to forest and rock. If evening catches them still climbing, they may grow to fear the tall trees that rise around them, the yellow eyes that watch them through brush and stone – a surprising number of eyes, for a forest so close to a city. But hopefully, they will arrive at the gate unharmed ushered in by the glorious statue of the Patron Saintess of Osthelia “Sanctaphandri”.

The outer walls of the sanitarium are smooth stone, ivy fanning out along it, clinging to the edges and creases reaching skyward. To help with the cleaning, part of the small stream is diverted and flows into the sanitarium itself. Most of the water is used for bathing, washing, and cooking; the rest flows down through the sanitarium. Some patients swear that they can hear the water echoing far below them, in the quiet of the night, and dream of the gleaming water falling into the darkness beneath them, falling forever. The doctors assure them that the water merely runs down through the lower floors and out through a culvert at the base of the wall. To help in the efforts in retaining a clean environment, limestone was used to help cover up the odor of chemicals and other scents that may linger in the halls.

Oddly enough, nothing grows where the water flows out from the hospital. The doctors believe this is because of the disinfectants used in the daily cleanings. The townspeople, however, are careful that their children do not play near the outflow, and there are whispers that the waters carry darker things than chemicals.

House Crowley

House Motto: "In Hora Corvus" (The Hour of the Crow)

House Sigil: The background is pitch black, with a spark of crimson under a purple etched in cauldron. From the cauldron erupts infernal green flames in the shape of crows. The sides seem to be hedged with what appears to be ivy down the sides to outline the whole banner, a statement bold about the age of its heritage.

As the tapestry of the honorable, and ancient hung over the mantle of the hearth, The crimson fitted leathers on a comfortable seat set beside the a table in the library. On the table, a book was parted, open and exposed. The tome was of Crowley’s ancestor… Darrius Crowley and his heroic rise from the rough mines, to an honored status in what is now the County of Osthelia. Andreas Crowley smirked, staring at the shelf dedicated to the tomes of his family… the next space would be for him.

His mind only lingered on that fact for a moment before he frowned. Who would write it, and what would they write about him? Would it be the new heights of the medical field? The darker and more secret parts of his life, kept under tight wraps as the dark arts are dangerous and taboo. His secret works under the iconic Sanitarium? Would all his achievements be shrouded in the darkness from which they came? Would they pale in comparison to his ancestors? Then his face curved into a grin. “ no… I will be remembered.” He said to the bookshelf. He grasped the tome of Darrius, and put it back in its resting place, then grasped his crow headed cane, and turned from the room. There was work to be done, to expand his name, and his research.

His house, this manor was so decadent from where his ancestors roots were from. The building has since been expanded on and grown much like the Crowley line. Seeming almost to withstand time incorporeal, he paused eyeing the build on his way out. Each new wing was due to some sort of need from a previous ancestor. Something as simple as the herb and plant garden encompassing the roof of the entry hall as an exquisite balcony. That was placed in due to Drathos Crowley, who modernized the alchemical station in the house, and expanded the storage to maintain it… he was considered to be the Alchemist. Though he only considered himself a pupil of his ancestors, his real muse was the plants and their darker traits.

Aside that was the Library addition, a spiraling tower where his current study resided. But under the library was the real addition, hidden under the foundation, caverns with plenty of space and spare room for experiments or dark arts… even dark tomes of knowledge. This was courtesy of Magnus Crowley, who took his name to heart, devoting his life to unlocking both spectrums of the arcane. Of course there were others, but he had to get to the Sanitarium and continue his work.
