Lore Story: The Journey of a Gentle Light

A short story of the experience a girl of the Angelica Clerica had while on her journey to earn her title of Soothe.

Fiora woke in the morning, her head wet with sweat and her long hair spread across the bed below her. She held her arm up to block the blinding light shining through the window as she prepared to embark on her mission, her anxiety coming up in her chest as she got dressed, her mind racing. She barely practiced and didn't think it was a big deal to prepare- it cannot be much harder than what she had already done. She had healed wounds from the knights and trainees who sparred but never a real grievous wound.

She was told to travel with a knight of the order named Julia- a shield maiden. The order always did believe in a sort of buddy system, always a pair of two; one healer and one knight. It was the job of the knight to ensure the soothe or luminary can get to their destination, it was painful to wait for the injured to be carried to the Abbeys so the order has members go to where action might be, doing on the spot healing the best they can.

Leave for the duchy's south border, find a leading officer and have him give you solders to heal, after completing his given task, you are to return to the abbey. This was the direct orders of the leading Herald at the abbey.

Fiora and Julia began their journey quite late as Fiora was lazy in preparation and had not done it the night before- making it to the southern front as small skirmishes broke out from day to day. The commanding officer had the two travel along the border to a small forest where solders were in combat. After arriving there, the two entered a small camp, doing their best to heal the solders and preparing them to fight again. They were informed that they were the second pair to arrive and that the others were deeper in the forest. They desperately need them back at camp so Fiora and Julia entered the forest.

The anxiety continued to build in Fiora, not subsiding even with the rather muscular and strong Julia with her whom she had a great deal of adoration for. The feeling in her chest was painful as they headed deeper into the dark forest, the sounds of silence filled the air like an ominous cloud of death.

This feeling was only manifested in the throat of Fiora as they came across the bloody bodies of a young boy and older man, both bleeding profusely and each in agony while slumped along a thick tree. For so long it seemed so innocent of a job, Fiora never thought that any of the knights or practitioners were in harms way, or at least it never sank deep enough into her mind until it was right in her face. She wanted to cry, her young mind unready for the scars such things can leave. She tried to stop the bleeding, tried to treat the wounds of the boy who could no longer speak but had tears running down his eyes. Seeing his face only made Fiora look down at his knees out of fear of their eyes meeting. When she dared to look back up, his eyes had rolled in his head and Fiora's body lost all movement. It was at that moment she realized the mortality of man and the reason she was sent here, to prevent the solders fighting from becoming just like the boy. The fact the older man pulled through was good but did not do anything to get the eyes of the boy out of Fiora's head, his eyes- they could see the spirit plain.

While she did complete the original task given, she had to be the one to inform the order of the death of the trainee when she returned.

She became a soothe, but now with the reality of her position in her mind, she had a lot more to focus on, a reason to improve herself.
