(ideas for fun) Wraiths, Ghosts and Bargains

We know magic and supernatural beings are extremely rare in Chronicles of Elyria, which should be respected. With that in mind I believe most of this should primarily be restricted to the astral plane, the biggest exception being possible bargains.

Now, what if you don't want to pass on to great beyond. What if you don't want to be reincarnated, and what if you just want to stay on the astral plane. I speak of course of spiritual entities, entities such as Wraiths,Ghosts and Reapers. Beings that exist outside of the perceivable world.

Note: These are idea's meant to be add-on to and balanced.

+==Wraiths==+

Wraiths are malevolent evil Pc's that seek to cause chaos, the strongest of which want nothing more than to plague the living. This is done by finding and stealing a body before it's spirit walker reaches it. Once in the world the body quickly deteriorates and eventually becomes a shadowy skeleton like figure, floating 3 to 4 feet off the ground. Only strong wraiths should be able to manifest themselves in this manner. Such strength is gained by misguiding and tricking spirit walkers to deliberately cause permadeath, this can result in the creation of a ghost if the spirit walker is forcefully kept away from their body.

=\/=\/=\/How to present this in Game Mechanics\/=\/=\/=

1) Disguises (examples: plans walker, mediums, reapers, spirit walker, loved ones and soul mates)

2) Games of hide and go seek (When a wraith bumps into a spirit walker they both disperse and reappear in different locations near by, spirit walker losses spirit and it becomes harder for him to find his body. The Wraiths goal is to keep finding and pushing back the spirit walker. Needless to say this would require some interesting stealth mechanics).

+==Ghosts==+

Ghosts are lost spirit walkers, whom were robed of there bodys. Moving on is difficult for ghosts as they tend to believe they haven't really died yet, that they still have time. This denial pushes a Ghost to seek help from mediums and planes walkers. This however only reveals that there body was stolen, and that only by destroying it, can the ghost move on.

=\/=\/=\/How to present this in Game Mechanics\/=\/=\/=

1) Through social interaction a ghost can gain the help of the living to free it's self from it's imprisoned state.

2) With help a Ghost is able locate it's body, due to possession is unable to anything more.

+==Reapers==+

Reapers are ghosts who lead to the down fall of powerful manifested wraith, and in doing so decided not to move on, believing in protecting others from their former fate. These great souls are the bane of weaker wraiths as they protect spirit walkers from there malevolence. Unlike a Ghost a Reaper knows it's deceased, and in knowing retains the ability to move on when it so chooses. Reapers are able to force wraiths to move on, though the strongest wraiths can put up a half decent fight. Reapers are able to damage and hurt manifested wraiths, but one on one fights with a manifested wraith usually results a forcefully moved on Reaper.

=\/=\/=\/How to present this in Game Mechanics\/=\/=\/=

1) A Reaper can sense near by spirit walkers, they tend to offer protection and guidance to the spirit walkers body.

2) A Reaper is naturally stronger than wraiths, this isn't the case when it comes to manifested wraiths.

3) Like the wraith, a Reaper can bump into wraiths forcing them to disperse and reappear in different locations near by, wraiths losses spirit until it finally meets it's permadeath.

|||||||||||||||||||||||||Bargains|||||||||||||||||||||||||

Bargains can be made with the dead, usually in the form of favors. Unlike the Living, the dead can pass though walls and eavesdrop on targets making them the best spy's. In rare circumstances they can cause hallucinations, minor damage or even possession. These effects aren't flashy, and from the outside viewer would seem more like bouts of temporary insanity. Salt rings and Iron walls are best used if you suspect spirits are watching.

I don't know about Wraiths and Reapers but I would love to see other entities in the game such as Ghosts or Spirits that might come out after dark from time to time or even Sprites floating around in the darker wooded areas. I think it would be fantastic if you happen upon these while exploring or just traveling in the less inhabited parts of the maps. It would certainly add to the atmosphere and they don't even have to be interactive, though that would be nice too.

What if certain areas were more or less 'spiritually attuned' and you'd occasionally see glimpses of unidentifiable players spirit walking? That'd be pretty eerie. Since I believe NPCs don't have souls in Elyria, this is the best way I can think of that being incorporated.

Could be non interactive for the masses but maybe the rare few talented players could somehow affect these wandering souls?

It may be interesting to make such spooky places a challenge for getting back to your body - avoid the deep woods on your way back to your body or you may end up trapped in the spirit realm/astral plane forever.... - or something like that. Or there could be an equivalent where you WANT to go through the woods on your way back because the spiritual energy there makes you move quicker (there would be cause for more spirits to be passing through that area if this were the case, so more ghosts sightings?)

To add on to Slaine's idea, some manner of spirits are merely an energy print that plays out an event over and over again. So meeting certain criteria, what if there were areas where these energy prints could be made. And at certain hours during the day or night, weather providing (like overcast during the day for example), those energy prints play their events and perhaps startle anyone not expecting it.
