It is clear that nutrition and parental involvement in early child development are huge determining factors in the final developed adult. It would be interesting if this factored into game mechanics, if you don’t feed the children they are stunted. Also if you are around your heir the greater your spark carries over skills and talents for example. You could even go as far as setting how protective you are to your child, increasing their survival/growth rate while perhaps decreasing their starting skill level.

This would be a unique opportunity to actually take critical real world behaviors and blend them with game mechanics. Maybe even help teach something important.

All very good points. However, another thing to keep in mind is that NPCs, even your very own children, will not automatically do what you want them to. They have needs/desires of their own. So, if you want them to stay close and learn your weapon crafting skills, they may decide to peace out, since they really want to learn to play the flute and live that bardic life.

With that in mind, it would be a neat mechanic to have something like you are suggesting, when you do have a child that wants to learn your skills.
