Account registration and email verification policy update

By Vye

Hail and well met, pioneers of Elyria!

We've made a minor release to the website in order to resolve some of the issues around Kickstarter bindings and to reduce the amount of spam showing up in the forums lately.

Beginning in July, account registration enjoyed a fairly relaxed policy that allowed new accounts to be logged in immediately. While this was very streamlined for folks who wanted to make a post or purchase a product tier, bypassing a strict email-verification step caused an unforeseen issue with password resetting. If an account had not been confirmed, the password reset functionality would not trigger - a thing that makes a lot of sense if you don't know whether an email address is valid! But many folks with valid email addresses never did use the verification link and, as a result, couldn't reset their passwords. It also allowed erroneous accounts to create spam in the forums.

You'll be happy to know that we've addressed this issue! All accounts which have not had their email address verified will be required to perform email verification prior to logging in again. We've also added reCAPTCHA support to account registration to make sure only the finest robot spammers can gain access.

Because of this fix, you may find you are asked to confirm your email address again or for the first time. Go ahead and do so, then everything should be right as rain. Unless you are robot spammer. Then we ask that you do not confirm your email address and apply to become an NPC instead! ;) If you are requested to confirm your email address but no longer have the verification email, simply click the link to resend your verification email.
