Assassins or thief guilds?

First time poster here, been following this game for a long time now, since kickstarter. Finally was able to up and purchase the game and now here I am!

One of my friends that I have been playing games with for years now is a hardcore pvper that always plays a thief or rogue class. He enjoys the ambushing and sneaking up on people and starting fights. I am wondering what kind of role he would have to take up in this game because he has never liked life skills or PVE (with the exception of hardcore raiding in WoW- BC and the latest one). Currently we are playing Black Desert Online.

I know some of you are going to say NO. He has no place in this game, we do NOT want him here. I hear ya. I get it. Butttttt, I would like to play this game with my friend. Which brings me to my title question.

Is there going to be a role within the society of larger towns or just in general in this world of Elyria for assassins and professional thieves. Is that playstyle part of the political intrigue of kingdoms? Is it something that has been considered or discussed before? (links please!). I am looking for more official information and discussion on these ideas.

One of my thoughts was that there could be a league of assassins employed by the King/Queen or a wealthy Duke/Duchess to keep their subjects in line through threat of force or actual kill contracts. My other thought was an independent assassins guild or deviant guild with assassins in it that would be willing to take these high risk contracts and suffer the consequences if caught etc.

Guess I should stop rambling... Thanks in advance for any info/links/thoughts!

Maybe I should have posted in general discussion? Newish to forums.

Many people have desires for assassin/black market organizations. Some aren't opposed to having that within their borders if it is outward facing.

Even if he went against the grain of the government influence I am sure he would be able to find a home, create a home, and play the game in his preferred way. But it might be a little more difficult in this game than some others.

Hi Sbrydion and welcome to the community!

They playstyle you are talking about concerns what are known as the "deviant" skills - and are absolutely 100% part of the game and part of the experience. If your friend wants to be a thief or an assassin, that is definitely within the realms of possibility. This playstyle, however, does not come without risk.

Deviant behaviour is illegal in Elyria. Being apprehended by the law results in jail time which, while instantaneous from the point of view of the player, results in reducing your character's lifespan (thus hastening their death), a lowering of their reputation, and possibly skill atrophy (unconfirmed).

There are ways around this - you can create disguises and forge documents to fake an identity, ensure that none of your crimes are witnessed, or otherwise cloak your actions, all of which are deviant actions in and of themselves.

All of these mechanics exist for two reasons:

  • To add intrigue, fun and depth to deviant playstyles

  • To discourage genuinely anti-social behavior such as griefing and trolling; if you're likely to lose game time by repeatedly and artlessly killing people, the devs reason, you will not do it for long.

I hope that this answers your (and your friend's!) enquiries!

I also encourage you both to read the Dev Journals - located under "Community" at the top of the page. They contain almost all of the information that the community currently has access to about CoE, but rest assured that the community will always be here to answer any enquiries you have that aren't covered by the dev journals, even if just to say we don't know yet.

And again - welcome to CoE!

Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.

Welcome Sbrydion.

We are not a toxic community, we won't refuse people because they currently play Black Desert Online ^^

Assassins and thieves will be a thing in CoE. It won't be easy, because your victims, will surely track you. Assassination won't be possible within a minute. It'll take preparation, and it'll be really hard to achieve it.

If you like this gameplay, i'm sure someone would want to hire you. You can also be a spy/scout, most likely within army, which is in my opinion the best option, because you won't have to fear justice within your kingdom.

Otherwise, thieves and assassins guilds already exists. You can join them, but be ready, it'll be a criminal life.

Anyway, where are you planing to play ? NA or EU ? You should go to the discords of the kingdoms and check if someone has plan for you.

Enjoy your stay and i hope you'll find what you seek for.

To be honest, the game sort of likes this sort of deviant behavior. The only difference from most games is that they promote you to do stuff like this for a reason and not just to be a nuisance. In other words don't just run around and annoy people. Plan out your capers so that you won't get caught. Play your thief or assassin as if you really were the thief or assassin and not just someone playing a game. This game and most of it's players promotes and wants conflict to drive the story. What we don't want is griefers.

I know they have a disguise skill and many other deviant type skills to get better at and learn over time. They mentioned if you wear a hood over your head it will be hard to tell who you are and when wearing a disguise someone who knows you might be able to penetrate the disguise depending on how well they know you and how good at it you are. They also have career paths that could be described as detectives to hunt down your deviant friend. Sorry no specific skill sets have really been announced yet but the deviant ones have been mentioned.

Bandits, thieves and assassins are welcome in my town. I'm looking for talented pvpers who can work for me in exchange for coin and fame. Ofcourse you can play as assassin but beware as you might end up dead or exiled from kingdom.

There are quite a few groups looking to do stuff like this as it was mentioned before. I am a count/baron and plan on having an alt that is versed in the deviant lifestyle. I plan on having a section within my walls that is designed for improving deviant skill lines. This depending on how an assassins guild building would work of course. But yeah, to not repeat what everyone has said. No one would fault him for choosing such a play style, since it is allowed in the system in some way. I personally want more bandits and thieves in the game, it gives a reason for people to protect themselves and be aware.

We need more antagonist in this game I say. the more of them, the more the reason people have to become the hero, and I like good heroes who actually become heroes with some effort.

Thanks for all the fast replies, I couldn't tell how active this forum community was, but guess I do now! :)

We are both NA East. I will look for the discord link, didn't know there was one.

I didn't realize that was going to be a real option. So there is an actual army or military angle in the game, eh? Is there going to be a School for the military to advance and spread war technologies? Or does that fall more under individual crafting types and player imposed battlefield strategy?

Hi Sbrydion and welcome to the community!

Thank you very much!

There would be a large role for him in our world. People are generally very practical beings (generally). If your friend can "provide" an item at a significantly discounted price, there will be a market for that. If your friend could "persuade" another person to perform (or stop) a certain task, there would be a market for that. Deviants supply a market need.

It's as Kelipski says. Not everyone realizes it, but the mechanic to have contracts in this game wouldn't be half as interesting without the need to enforce them as well.

Petty crime aside, thieves, assassins and deviants of all sorts are contract-breakers among parties who have come to written agreements.

For one side of a signed contract to reap all of the rewards is going to be an invaluable asset to anyone willing to take that risk. As such, there will always be a market for deviants.

Haha, I have to laugh when people "advertise" they will have deviant guilds in their areas. It's suppose to be secret!

Just kidding. :)

That is kind of my concern too though. A successful assassin or thief should either live completely off the record or only be known by a signature or an Alias. But knowing the guild name (and if there's a way to find a roster of that guild) would be counterproductive, wouldn't it?

A couple more questions: Is there a deviant school? or deviant technologies? I am thinking about lockpicks/lockpicking, poisons, stealth clothing, sneak attack weapons, traps. Are those all going to fall under alchemy, blacksmithing, and tailors or is it going to be specific within the deviant skill-line?
