Warriors! The Zabi Demesne thirsts for the strength of its peoples!
The barbarians have raided our towns and murdered our children but does this foreshadow our defeat? No. It is a new beginning. Compared to the barbarous horde the military resources of Zabi is less than one-thirtieth of theirs. Despite this major difference, how is it that we have been able to fight the fight for so long? It is because our goal in this war is a righteous one. It’s been over fifty years since we ended our own civil war and nearly two since, consumed by greed, the barbarians began a war against our blessed Demesne! We, the blessed children of the gods almighty, have had a long and arduous struggle to achieve glory for our great nation. Our fight is sacred, our cause divine. Yet the war is at a stalemate. Perhaps many of you have become complacent, we will change that.
Many of your fathers and brothers have perished valiantly in the face of a contemptible enemy. We must never forget what the barbarians have done to our people! These brave men have shown us these virtues through their own valiant sacrifice. By focusing our anger and sorrow, we are finally in a position where victory is within our grasp, and once again, our most cherished nation will flourish. Victory is the greatest tribute we can pay those who sacrifice their lives for us! Rise, our people, Rise! Take your sorrow, and turn it into anger! Zabi thirsts for the strength of its people!
-- Lord Gihren before the Battle of the Bridges
As the sword and shield of Nirath the Zabi Demesne is highly militarised and as such requires new recruits for its legions. With a flexible progression, multiple points of entry and a wide variety of roles the Regular Forces of the Zabi Demesne has openings for warriors and soldiers of all types.
The Regular Forces of the Zabi Demesne use a modified form of the Nirathii National Structure.
Our forces are divided into two legions, 3rd Legion (Gloria Domini) and the 6th Legion (Victrix). Each legion is roughly responsible for operations within each of the duchies. The legions are directly under the command of the Dukes.
Each legion has between two and four Sector Commanders who are responsible for a group of counties called a Sector each command between two and four Commanders. Commanders are generally responsible for one or two counties and command between two and eight Captains.
Captains command regiments which are the primary building block of the Regular forces. Each Captain has free reign to decide the focus and structure of their regiment as long as they have Sergeants as mandated in the Nirathii National Structure.
Specialists such as medical personnel, engineers and artillerists come under a separate centralised structure including a robust training course at our Zabi Academy of Military Arts.
Our structure and the way it interacts with the various county and town militias is highlighted in the image below.
The Regimental System
The regimental system is the centre of the Zabi Demesne's approach to its military. Each regiment has a wide latitude in what structure, focus and equipment for their forces. Each Captain is given a budget by their Duke with which to equip and maintain their forces. As long as discipline and equipment standards are adhered to and the regiments are capable of fulfilling their missions. House Zabi does not care about variations (meaning rich Captains may equip their troops to higher standards if they so wish).
Those who wish to become Captains within the Zabi Demesne must petition either Duke who if they desire will award a contract (termed a commission hereafter) detailing the number of troops required, certain duties that must be attended too (such as patrolling roads or garrisoning a town) and the budget given. The budget usually consists of an initial starting capital and monthly wages for maintaining a certain number of soldiers (as defined by the commission.) Captains may sell their military services to other organisations with the permission of the Dukes.
To assist in equipping regiments in a uniform fashion the Zabi Demesne offers a uniform (DE designed) set of armour at cost suitable for medium and heavy infantry.
Multiple Entry Points
The Regular Forces have multiple entry points. The most common route is for a prospective recruit to contact the regiment of his choice and enlist as a legionnaire, this route allows the new entrant to learn the basics of warfare within the regiment he will fight for.
Those who are members of a knightly order or who have graduated the knight's course at the Zabi Academy of Military Arts may start at the rank of sergeant in any regular force regiment.
Mayors who enter into a baronial contract to become Barons will be considered Captains of their own regiments.
Senior officers of independent mercenary units and large warbands who wish to formalise their relationship with the Zabi Demesne may join the Regular Forces as Captains.
Counts who enter into a baronial contract will be considered to have the rank of Commander within the Regular Forces.
What are the Benefits of Joining the Regular Forces?
Various benefits exist to joining the Regular Forces. While each regiment offers it’s own benefits in regards to training, pay and pensions there are benefits that apply to the entire regular forces.
Access to Specialist Training
Regardless of the regiment a legionnaire joins all members of the Regular Forces have access to the Zabi Academy of Military Arts with several free training courses and most other courses reduced in cost.
Those who serve the Zabi Demesne loyally have the chance to advance socially as well as militarily with advancement into the ranks of the aristocracy or even the nobility a legitimate possibility. The Zabi Demesne has a policy of granting conquered lands to the soldiers who won them through their blood and sacrifice, allowing even landless captains and legionnaires to be richly rewarded for their services.
