House Devereau - The House of Serpents

Their Story

It is believed that the Devereau family line have an affinity with serpents and high resistance to poison from them. Often able to handle the deadly creatures like they were kin, happily content to serve as pets for the family. Rumors state that they could even communicate with the snakes and control them to do their biddings, many believe that the sudden deaths of the Darkholm’s enemies were at the hands of a Devereau snake charmer. Although the Clan were known to adore their serpents, they also shared a loving bond with the Owls, usually using them as messengers when they needed it delivered. But they were also loving partners to the Clan members.

House Darkholm and House Devereau

The Devereau have a long and twisted history with the Royal blood of Darkholm and Their Ancestors. Being similar in appearance, apart from the telltale burning gold eyes of the Darkolm, Devereau wear Sea green eyes. They share very similar beliefs, in the worship of Luna and the need for purity and marriage to stay within family lines, but alas, the Devereau’s had the choice of marrying outside, were they to wish for it.. Having been beside each other in battle many times, and have always come to their aid, Darkholm and Devereau almost became like family. They treat each member of the opposing clan as if they were blood related. Offending one house, you risked the wrath of both, and a possible swift death by poison.

The Devereau Members Appearance.

The Devereau family clan all share the features of pale ivory skin, from a dark red to a light red color of the hair, then the sea green eyes, or the color of emeralds, as some say. The Family being bred for battle, most male heirs being very tall and muscular, whereas the women tend to be short and blessed with an hourglass figure. Though, all children of the clan are taught combat since birth, whether they are female or male in hopes of joining the the battle to defend their lands and their Darkholm allies.

Lore of Devereau

The Devereau family clan can be traced back to the earliest of days when the Darkholm clan had first began gathering power and influence over the lands now known as Blackheart. Many of the people of that time were scared to be close to the famed Darkholm family, fearing them from the many rumors that spread about them, and the darkness they chose to reside in. But the The Devereau family clan shared similar love for the dark lands, and found a sense of kinsmanship with the Darkholm, the usage of their serpents greatly allured the Golden eyes, their curiosity had proven fruitful as it meant that they could eliminate any who oppose them quietly and efficiently. This very kinsmanship meant that the The Devereau family clan never strayed far from their chosen allies, Where the Darkholm marched, surely the The Devereau followed. Many battles that were fought in the Darkholm’s name, The Devereau family clan fought beside them as if they were defending their own blood. Swords dipped in the The Devereau family’s unique poison, The Darkholm could slaughter thousands, and those not killed instantly writhed in pain for hours due to the poison's effects. The Devereau family clan first chanced upon their affinity with snakes early in their time in blackheart lands, Their ancestor Count Roger Devereau was exploring the dark lands that surrounded the Darkholm’s Duchy. Walking through many swamps, forests and caves he happened upon the body of a red bellied serpent, who instantly reared up in anger, threatening to bite, And it is rumored that Roger simply spoke a few words and the snake relaxed its position and slithered towards him, wrapping around his neck and never left his side again. Both Roger and the serpent gave birth to children and the snakes never were far from their human allies, spending their entire lives beside them. Consequently, the Devereau family clan ended up developing a resistance to the poison from their reptilian members, as was found out by a nurse maid, who was horrified when one of the snakes bit an infant child, fearing the worst she ran and told the head of the house, who all came running in fear the child would die. But the child simply stared at them as they gathered, the snake still in her arms and she remained unaffected by the bite. Testing if it was a fluke or not, the same snake was made to bite a criminal who had murdered several women, and he writhed in pain, tossing and turning until his eyes exploded bleeding out from his eyes. This same close bond between snake and human meant that most of their family beliefs were tied with their serpent nature. The daughters of the clan, all danced a unique form of dance that had their serpent companion wrapped around their body, The daughters and sons all learnt combat with being able to balance their snake partners along with their swords. It is also believed that the snake is used also in choosing prospective candidates for marriage, If the snake doesn't approve of the candidate a new one is found till the snake welcomes them openly. They kept pet mice alongside their snakes so that they were fed alive food, and this kept the snakes happy, although they still hunted down wildlife surrounding their lands.
