Storm Legion County

Introduction

The Legion crested the hill while still maintaining their lines and order. We knew we'd now be moving downhill and continued steadily until we emerged from the forest almost thirty minutes later. It was the latest in a series of wooded hills and forests they had traversed in a trek that began 3 months ago beyond the steppes and sands of the desolate wastelands of the east. The image of western mountains first appeared as a wall of shadow from a cloud bank expanse, but would still be a further week's journey or more. They were dusky blue-grey with snow capped peaks still hidden and spanning the horizon.

The landscape had changed and grasslands and water sources were becoming more prevalent. Dryas elk and canis rabbit had been abundant in the forests, and the troop had feasted well last night. Finding the first river had been exhilarating and the addition of trout that they pulled from it had been a welcome addition to the diet. There had always been a capacity for scavenging and trapping, so being able to supplement the root vegetables, mushrooms and berries with the fish had raised the spirits and moral significantly.

The strategy was to cross the river and head upland and further west. We'd keep the south flowing water on our right and observe it from a height until we found the shore or lake it emptied into and a place to cross. As I continued on our quest my thoughts were carried back to our entry weeks before.

The Beginning

We're the advance expeditionary force of the 47th Legion and have journeyed into this new land called Elyria in response to the rumours of conflict and discord that began to reach us with an unnerving frequency. The news was of a struggling land beset with unrest and war; good people and good Kingdoms being challenged and confronted by maniacal rulers and despots. And the hope of prosperity and safety being threatened in it's course.

The information spoke of a Queen named Rowena who ruled a Kingdom called Blackheart, It was said to be a strong and determined land with both structure and a system of government and facility. But at the same time it was said to be challenged by those who sought to undermine and provoke its status and most importantly, its freedoms.

The Century was canvassed and a preliminary group stepped forward and volunteered to go and find for ourselves what was about, and what was to be done. The fields were harvested and the herds had been culled before the departure, and the quest was uneventful as it began. However as was expected and known to happen, it didn't stay as such. Between confrontations with brigands and encounters with highwaymen the men soon knew the familiar taste of battle; though for any challenge, it lack. Then the evening after the latest encounter the air changed abruptly as they approached the first range of mountains.

A hollow wind rushed towards them and with it the temperature dove. Within what was mere minutes they found themselves in the midst of a violent and tempestuous late spring blizzard that caught the Legion in the shallow foothills where trees were scarce and the land flat. Huddling close we pressed forward, but not alone.

First Encounter

The shadows darted about like mist in the snow. The darkness seeming to have spawned their numbers. The horses became reluctant and their ears piqued as their breathing stalled. Amidst their murmurs we quickly dismounted and placed the mounts and packs behind us as we braced for a the unknown. Then it came; quick and sudden. But ultimately merely a sacrifice. As if the storm was forbidding us to enter, the wolves were as messengers intent on unleashing a fury that would forestall lesser men and turn back those lacking of valour and mettle. The first one -- a huge black dire wolf fell to my sword, and not a moment later two more were taken by Dralzen and then Bealin. A fourth wailed as Tyke impaled its neck, and then the 5th was cleaved by Campbell's waraxe. Their spirit vanquished, what remained of the pack scurried with whimpers that silenced the howls they had dared to bellow so readily.

We stowed the carcasses on a ursaphant and gathered ourselves; forging ahead to where we had seen a pass before the winds and snow had risen. Whether we were at the farthest borders of our lands or the beginning of the place known as Elyria we didn't know, but at that location we found a run down tavern on the borders of our homeland. Other horses and mounts were in a weak corral next to the Inn so we placed ours in line as well. A fire burned inside and light was dispersed from the shuttered windows.

We heard voices as we opened the door and were greeted with the smell of meat and ale. And there we encountered the notorious Brigade known as the Devil Dogs.

Old Foes

For years they were a formidable adversary in a longstanding conflict; each of us fighting for what we believed in, and which through time generated a begrudgingly respect. When gathered under the shuddering roof of the dilapidated roadhouse (for what was believed would be an uneasy truce), the information we each possessed was compared and shared, and the truth emerged that Queen Rowena possessed huge tract of lands, but lacked experienced fighting forces and skilled craftsmen.

Our hesitant discord was interrupted by the baying of our mounts and we emerged to find those remaining wolves stalking the corral. Within moments three more of the curs were slain as the Legion and the Dogs proved an effective and efficient unit. The lust for a fight and the spilling of blood tempered our resolve and set the beginning of an alliance. We continued the parley and soon our campaign was newly introduced and strategy formulated.

Over a keg of ale and a barrel of wine we forged a purpose and agreed that each of our groups would advance and seek out the introduction and endorsement of Queen Rowena. We would establish a foothold in Blackheart from which we would work together to protect and defend this Kingdom. The Devil Dogs were to venture inland and northwesterly while we would find a southern route.

The Arrival

Thinking back brought a smile to my face as the thrill of traversing this land continued to expand. As I pondered about our inglorious beginning the river we were following disappeared and we came into an area of marshland and swamps. It appeared isolated and briny. The low winds from the north carried the smell of decay and musty vegetation. Regardless of the foreboding region, the still of birds and then the eruption of a cacophony of urgent shrieks let us all know that the land was alive in spite of itself. We found a raised hummock and camped knowing that this mucky and lush land would need us rested and alert to cross.

It was past noon the next day before our southwest path started to deliver us to more settled ground and the presence of a determined and defined river once again. It was still a full afternoon ride before the scout called out that they had found the shore.

Riding half an hour south and arriving just prior to dusk we noticed the river was merely a tributary and had joined a larger source which then had widened and braided. The estuary had created a litany of small islands before opening into a bay. There was flat shoreline and beach interspersed within the still somewhat reedy lands, yet further across the delta and bay were what appeared as noticeable cliffs and solid ground. As the Legion worked our way down and across the river we found a location to set up and secure a camp. The small cliffs provided shelter from the winds and overlooked a deep harbour below. The winds here blew from the sea and the dank of the swamps had dissipated. This would be where we settled and now we would send out a small party to head back up the river to find the "Dogs" and from there to Queen Rowena.

Our small group followed and navigated the main river inland for 5 days having found it had forked again farther upland, and soon after we came upon the settlement. We had again passed near the swamplands on many occasions as we went inland but had found purchase and footholds on an area of wide plain to the northwest towards those blue-grey mountains. We heard the shouts and saw the soldiers. They came out to meet us and we saw their smiles and obvious satisfaction with what they had constructed. The Devil Dogs had been busy and the stronghold in the near distance was indeed already formidable. In speaking with the Officers it was clear that it was going to be impressive. The greater news however was that they had already had an audience with Queen Rowena and were able to fill us in about her base within House Darkholm and some of the other Houses within Blackheart.

I also was told that the Devil Dogs had been well received and Driscoll had been appointed as an Archduke and was, with his men, to control and administer a Duchy. From a look at the map it was evident that our river shore settlement was inside the jurisdiction of a Duchy to be known as Featherfell, and that the stronghold we were at would be called Ravenhold.

Lord Driscoll as he was now named, indicated he and Arktac Fox had begun to establish a military contingent. He also mentioned that Fox had been appointed to rank of Baron in the Kingdom. More pressingly though, our Legion was to travel on to meet with Queen Rowena and introduce ourselves personally for Lord Driscoll had already announced our presence in her Lands and spoken of the 47th Legion. He mentioned and had informed her of our alliance with the Devil Dogs and intention to assist and aide in all that was needed.

Filling our wine skins, canteens, and laying on some hardtack and jerky, we left quickly to go further inland towards House Darkholm. The path was now a road and we traveled easily, meeting commoners and exchanging greetings as we passed. The impression was of obvious contentment and while we never mentioned our business or intention, we were treated with genuine hospitality. Even as we knew we were being watched and observed. Even as we realized this road was again taking us towards the marshes and swamp.

Darkholm - where Tyrus Stormwolf and The Storm Legion are announced

Within a few days we came to the gates of the Capital. We were detained briefly but professionally before coming inside the walls where we saw a bustling and vibrant community. Our instruction had been to find the City Hall and from there wait until called to attend for our audience. The wait happened to be but a moment and I was requested to follow - alone, for a meeting, which I did with earnest. However instead of meeting Queen Rowena I met with her Advisor, Necoryuu, for a candid dialogue about our presence and intentions. At the conclusion of this introduction I was advised that Her Majesty Queen Rowena would now meet me and that she had sent a carriage to take me to her.

I could tell you of the splendour of the castle with its impressive tapestries and decor yet my words would fail in the effort. Just know this: there is nothing false or shallow about anything that is Blackheart. Everything seems to have a purpose and intent, and nothing is frivolous or weak in the message it sends or the effect it has. As for Queen Rowena, she is mesmerizing in her deportment and inspiring with her composure.

We discussed our shared histories. There was no boasting or need for embellishment. Even had I thought to do so I knew instinctively it would be of no use, and that the Queen would know instinctively. No, this was an impressive Ruler whose grace motivated you to disclose your ambitions and inspirations, and who inspired a sense of worth and expectation at the same time.

Without any introduction Queen Rowena then began to speak about our encounter in the storm with her wolf guard. She was not hostile or demanding reparation. Instead she spoke with what I sensed was some reserved admiration in reference to our resolve and steel. She spoke of wanting good citizens of resolute character and fortitude and then pronounced I was to be known as Count Tyrus Stormwolf and that our Legion would be known as The Storm Legion. I and The Storm Legion would assist Archduke Driscoll and Featherfell in establishing a military entity and force, with emphasis on supplying the Duchy and also to develop a mounted cavalry and naval ability for fast transport of troops.

So it begins

Having our tasks outlined and position determined, we departed back to the delta and began our preparations. We sent word back to the 47th Legion and soon others joined us together with new acquaintances we would find. With the protection of Ravenhold and the ready market for our goods and services, Storm Legion County has thrived and our settlement has become established as Legion Bay.

So had begun the new Chapter of the 47th Legion legacy and from which was born The Storm Legion and I emerged as Tyrus Stormwolf.

In general, our members originate from The 47th Legion which is a military themed, North American based player association. The 47th engages in a wide variety of in-game activities to include PvE, PvP, crafting/trading, exploration, and colonization.

Our members pride themselves on professionalism and esprit de corps which are our core principles. We hold our Legionaries to a high standard and prohibit any and all types of exploiting and cheating.

Teamwork and collective effort are mantras the 47th Legion lives by. We explore in a squad, move in a squad, and we all do what we can to contribute to the Legion. Our Legionaries provide materials for the crafters who in turn provide gear back to the Legionaries. If you like to go and do things your own way, then the our team isn't for you.

We strive to provide our Legionaries with a semi-realistic military simulation environment. This involves some light role-playing elements but our rank structure, personal awards, training exercises, and camaraderie constitute the bulk of the atmosphere.

Additionally, we recognize the contributions our Legionaries make to the unit. Whether it's something as simple as creating some artwork, recruiting friends into the unit, or capturing a ship single-handedly, we reward effort and contribution with position and rank.

The various play-styles would rank in Legion-wide interest as such: PvP: ►►► The Storm Legion will be engaged in PvP and it will be one of our primary activities.

PvE: ►►► We can't PvP all of the time so while PvE is obviously going to be an important activity and provide the materials and products to assist and enhance our abilities.

Colonization: ►►► This one of our primary motivating factors and will be heavily facilitated by our PvP and exploration play. Our crafting progression and unit functionality will augment our gaming experience together.

Construction: ►►► A combat unit is only as strong as it's supply chain. The Storm Legion will feature a robust crafting infrastructure centered around a functioning supply section which gives our crafters the ability to quickly advertise items and our Legionaries the ability to easily request them! Our infrastructure will foster and promote synchronicity of our objectives!

Exploration: ►►► This will be a cornerstone that will heavily influence city building and PvP. Scouts definitely have a place in The Storm Legion.

Socialization: ►►► We like people! Someone has to run those shady bars just off post where our Legionaries will relax in their downtime. We have big plans for building our alliances and creating strong settlements so citizens of all walks of life will be needed. We will have regularly scheduled activities and operations which include PvP; PvE and crafting/scavenging aspects.

Our Featherfell Duchy will have a website and forums to enable progressive communication and interaction.

Glad to see people reporting in. I'd like to go into some slight detail on what you can expect at the Stronghold of Fairfeather. It will be primarily a fletching and wood working stronghold so you can expect some of the finest archers around + some of the best ranged equipment (Bows, trebs, crossbows, scorpios, and the like). Furthermore with it's bent on wood working you can expect trade items such as paper to come from here. Emphasis in ship building will also be a primary goal as it will be required in the skill line of wood working.
