Malthyra opened the door to the room she dared not enter since she had ended her mother's reign. She walked in slowly, allowing her eyes to wander the walls, bookshelves and antiques as her mind wandered, lost in the history of the room.
Desperately she had tried to forget the good memories she made with this room's former owner, though the fact they were so few only added to how precious they truly were to her.
Malthyra entered the room slowly, still seemingly lost in visions of the past. Her eyes gazed toward the bed where her mother would dress her hair in the most absurd fashions. A smirk curled into her upper lip as she turned to place her hands on her mother's writing desk. She chuckled softly at the thought of how the prior Duchess was so neat that it was an obsession. She remembered several times where she was told, "if there is any clutter, it is the sign of a messy mind". She chuckled softly, shaking her head before noticing it.
She moved her hands to the center of the desk, rubbing her fingers gently down the spine of a thin journal placed precisely in the center of the desk. A sense of dread began to overwhelm her, as this was unlike her mother to leave something of importance lying around.
Malthyra unbuckled the latch, pulled back the cover, and began to read what appeared to be the start to a letter.
Malthyra gasped for air, bringing her hands to her stomach. She had never expected to hear from her mother again, most certainly not in a letter. Bringing her hands back to the pages she felt uneasy as her fingers slowly began to pull back the cover letter.
Needing to know more, Malthyra thrust the pages back to continue. She felt the need to rush through the letter, to search for anything that may ease her conscience.
Malthyra slumped into the chair near the desk. Her mind running rampant with the things she had just witnessed in words.
