A Memory

"Remember, a monarch is always the first to drink and eat," Melrose finishes his teaching with a satisfying gulp of bloodwine. He looks down to his patchy chin haired student and frowns. "Apprentice, are you even paying attention?"

"No monarch is going to want my attention," the young man mumbles.

Melrose watches him slowly sink from his upright posture. "Ap-.. Amicus, the hammer that breaks glass shall also forge steel."

Amicus raises a brow and looks up. "What?"

"Something my mentor told me and something I'm going to tell you." Melrose takes another sip of his wine and sighs. "As the Guardian.. As my apprentice.. there will be many blows of the hammer. One day, you will be forged to be worthy of a King's attention. Today though, you are still glass." Melrose pours his young apprentice a glass of wine and pushes it to him. "So, drink this and start hardening up."
