Lanternecomté
The County of Lanterns; or the County of Illumination
“We will light the way.”
My first memory is of looking up at the sky and asking mother what the stars were.
I have always wanted to know things simply for the sake of knowing them. As I have grown older, however, I have begun to understand like my mother did that knowledge is best used to help Mannkind on the road to the future. Knowledge is civilisation's lantern, guiding the way forward from the darkness of ignorance.
-- From the memoires of Anaïs de Lille, Countess of Lanternecomté
What?
Lanternecomté is a county dedicated to improving the world through knowledge.
Where?
Lanternecomté is located within the Duchy of Maritimus in the Kingdom of Kairos; we are the lantern sitting at the prow of the ship, guiding the way through the fog.
How?
We have five primary approaches to the seeking of knowledge.
Study
Books are written on all sorts of subjects. We will have great libraries and academies dedicated to sharing knowledge that has already been discovered by previous generations.
Experiment
Knowing 'how' is not the same as knowing 'why'. We encourage our craftspeople to experiment with how they create in order to discover why their techniques function, and possibly to invent new methods and technologies.
Research
Scholars who dedicate their lives to understanding the mysteries of the universe may gather in our academies to share research and help one another on the path to illumination.
Explore
The world contains many spaces still untamed. Explorers who wish to delve into the mysteries of the wilds will be given all the support they require.
Reclaim
Our ancestors have left all sorts of artifacts and ancient knowledge just laying around in ancient tombs and forgotten temples. When one of these ancient resting places is found, we will send expeditions of fearless adventurers to delve into their depths and recover their secrets.
Who?
The Countess of Lanternecomté is Anaïs de Lille, a woman of extraordinary empathy and curiosity. Her court is always open to the public, and she is always willing to lend a sympathetic ear and an overflowing wallet to the troubles and needs of the common folk.
Just don't take advantage of her generosity. She hates that. Prop yourself up if you can; only beg for help if there's nothing you can do.
