Question on forage resource

A nagging question has been bothering me about the forage resource associated with settlements and domains. The icon appears to be berries, suggesting that it is direct food gathering. However, in agricultural theory, “forage agriculture” often means “pastoral farming” where grazing animals are said to “forage.” That seems consistent with the professions, but not with the icon.

This matters for my personal settlement and domain planning and could be particularly important where northern domains are overpopulated due to additional population from titles.

I believe that it means there are things that can be gathered by gatherers. Whether it is berries, toxic plants, fruit trees, medicinal flowers, etc, is unknown, it could mean any of them

That’s what I originally thought (because of the icon), which could be problematic because it doesn’t scale like pastoral farming. However, looking at professions, “livestock keeper” as a profession seems associated with forage resources. And I would expect the agriculture SME would have used the word “forage” in that way. Thus, my question.

as far as I'm aware, foraging is basically a catch-all

There are multiple meanings of forage. It's use as a noun generally applies to bulk food for animals, so it is appropriately used in with that meaning in the term forage agriculture. As a noun it can also apply to the process of looking for food over a wide area. It's use as a verb means to gather available resources, especially food, over a wide area. There at least two other interesting variations of meaning as well. One applies to an activity that is similar to the "gathering" of "hunting and gathering". Another applies to the activity that military forces, for example, do when they are living "off the land", which suggests theft of resources from civilians.
