COMMUNITY - FORUMS - THE TAVERN
Write-A-Song Contest!

Hey guys! Welcome to... Uh. Jul... No. August. Let's call it August's contest. We can say we skipped the last one! Or.. We did it. It was amazing, and I won. Because I'm awesome. Etc.

Anyway. With the delay on the website, I got thrown off a little bit, but we're back with a contest from the Commander of Swords at the Temple of Mann, GravelordNito, who has donated the prizes for an ambitious contest!

This time, we're going to be holding a contest for song-crafting! Write a song! It can be a hymn chronicling the achievements of the gods and goddesses, or the downfall of the god of fire. It could be a bardic roundabout that celebrates the rise and fall of a nation. It can be a battle chant, shouted by your army as they march towards war!

Whatever you choose to do, make it count! Here's the prizes up for grabs. First place in the popular vote will take two of these of their choice, leaving the second place to take whichever game is left over. There may be other prizes that we can throw at you, too, but we'll see how it goes.

The Rules

  • One entry per person
  • Entries must be original ideas, no copypasting or taking ideas straight from a book
  • All entries may be used by the Children of Mann in future projects, where applicable
  • Please be respectful of other participants -- make this enjoyable for everyone, guys!
  • Winners will be decided by popular vote
  • All entries can be posted here in this thread
  • You are not required, but are certainly more than welcome, to become a follower of the Church of Mann in order to join this contest. We're going to be holding these once a month in order to have a bit of fun with the community. Followers have no obligation to the Children, but they're welcome to discuss ideas for contests and other things in our discord and on our forums, and just to become part of a good community that is here to support the people of Elyria.

Contest ends on Sunday, August 7th at 11:59PM EST. Voting will go up the next day!

Now, with everything set up, I hope everyone has their muses on speed-dial! Get to it!

Protip: If you want to build your song with proper formatting, in order to make a single line break, simply end any line you want to be in the same paragraph with a double space. Wherein | is a space, you would put:

Hello,||
Is it me, you're looking for~
(Double Enter here)
I can see it in your eyes~||
I can see it in your Smile~

Amateur attempt at a song.

Song Name: The Great Beginning

Part 1: The Age of Mann

The Burning was a time of great anguish,
All those who witnessed it was in despair.

Daemon - the Qin of Fire - has vanished,
The fire burned chaotically as to make everything disappear.

Children of Mann traveled far and wide,
The fire followed wherever they went.

As all hope was lost with no where to hide,
The Children of Mann got ready to meet their journey's end.

At a time of resignation,
A hero would discover the secrets of fire.

The discovery brought forth the golden age of many nations,
Born of hope and many desires.

The burning continued but in the hearth of Mann,
The great age of Mann has begun.

Part 2: The Akashic Records

However, there was greed in the hearts of Mann,
And thus the great dance of dynasty has began.

The hero dies broken and betrayed,
With the hope and dreams of those in from his era unheard.

The people wept and sent their prayers,
The Qins heard and returned the hero from the records.

Reborn again, the hero walks with pep,
Each time anew with a different destiny.

The journey of a life time begins with a single step,
The Akashic Records will remember the your story as it chronicles your journey.

Valiant Men of Old

I sing of the valiant men of old, who wrought this land in ages bold.
Few live in stories told, while the rest must lay in barrows cold.

Champions fought the creatures savage, protected folks from plunderers' ravage.
Lives were saved from possible damage, but the fighters mostly seemed to vanish.

I sing of the valiant men of old, who wrought this land in ages bold.
Few live in stories told, while the rest must lay in barrows cold.

Farmers came for the land, calluses rough and faces tanned.
For the future they made their stand, so their offspring would have a homeland.

I sing of the valiant men of old, who wrought this land in ages bold.
Few live in stories told, while the rest must lay in barrows cold.

Mothers watching over the house, no shrinking violets hereabouts.
If trouble came there was no doubt, that the woman would stand up and support her spouse.

I sing of the valiant men of old, who wrought this land in ages bold.
Few live in stories told, while the rest must lay in barrows cold.

I am like, so excited about this challenge :D

OK, so quick question: I have just written a very short hymn of only 4 lines. However, I have some music to go with it. If I were to record it, could I submit that? Or is it all about the lyrics?

{Deslyon the Rabbit Tamer}

Once there was a shepherd called Deslyon

Who cared for his herd with his heart//

Like a good shepherd he defended his herd

From canis rabbits from dawn til dusk//

One day he grew sick of this constant fighting

And took out his rage on those rabbits//

His curses echoed across the land

And the rabbits they fled before him//

He didn't stop until he found one that wouldn't flee

Because it was scared catatonic!//

He threw it in a cage and used it as a warning

For all the beasts to stay away//

People walked by and wondered why

This mann had done the unthinkable//

"He tamed a rabbit" they whispered, and the legend began

Of the mann who ruled the Canis//

One day his village was being raided

By men who sought to plunder//

People ran to Deslyon saying "Save us from the plunderers"

But Deslyon was as good at fighting as a farmer//

This made him so angry that curses began spouting forth

And he ran shouting at the invaders//

Their knees trembled; some menn wet their pants

And like the rabbits they fled!//

Deslyon the hero! With his catatonic rabbit friend!

Became a legend that day//

Could there be such a mann, with curses so foul?

To scare away plunderers and rabbits?

Oh hey there

The song is about one of the first Children of Mann to develop a Talent. The power drove him crazy and he renamed himself Death and began to terrorize the lands

The Song of Death

Darkest powers well within
It eats at bone and eats at skin
Lightning flies from fingertips
Skin it burns and flesh it rips

Fevered anger boils over deep
Skin will crawl and flesh will creep
Children faint and women moan
Snarling teeth, it eats at bone

Virgin caught in lustful grip
Around the neck the knot does slip
Target locked and in its sights
Hunger grows, cold kiss that bites

Wretched souls do fall prey
to sleepless nights and darker day
Nightmares haunt those who wake
It eats at bones that crack and break

Bulbuous sores popped under nail
Hope shines through and then it fails
Peaceful minds it snags and harrows
It eats at bone and swallows marrow

In the darkest places of your mind
Fear leeches hope and there it binds
Drains you dry the seeds now sown
Hunger sated it eats at bone.

If you have music to go along with it, submit it! I will not stand in the way of greatness.

My song (over on Youtube!): https://youtu.be/pOMo025whw0

Hymn for the Departed

We are the Children of Mann
Awakened from Darkness to Life.
And when our curse has ended,
We'll return to the Darkness again.

This was inspired by The Qindred religion :) I tried to imagine what it might be like to be a loyal follower of that religion. So, I came up with the idea that Qindred see death as a release from their 'curse', and so they do not fear it.
