With us being in the middle of our Kickstarter, and with land and titles being offered in exchange for Influence Points and backing support, it’s no surprise that there’s a large number of questions about what it means to own land, what land can be used for, how one becomes a mayor, what the responsibilities of managing a settlement are, how one becomes noble, and what safeguards are in place to protect someone’s claims. I’ve pulled together this design journal in answer to those questions.

Many of the game mechanics in Chronicles of Elyria are designed to appeal to a slightly older audience. The problem with the older audience is they tend to be people who've got careers, children, spouses, responsibilities, or other similarly pesky things that take away their computer time.
In this technical preview Soulbound Studios shows off Aging & Body Dynamics in their upcoming MMORPG, Chronicles of Elyria. Character aging is a core mechanic of the game as aging and eventually dying contributes heavily to the dynamic and immersive feeling of the world. As well, in CoE character customization doesn't end with character creation. It continues after you enter the world based on how you play your character.

When I first launched the Chronicles of Elyria website nearly two years ago I had pointed out that the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. At the time I launched the website it was just me working on Chronicles of Elyria. There were no other programmers, no artists, no animators, or web designers. There was no composer and no sound FX engineer, and the website was entirely black and white...

Over the last few months Chronicles of Elyria has been gaining more and more attention, and with that added attention comes quick judgements, assumptions, and while not intentional, miscommunications. Perhaps the most widely miscommunicated bit of information is how spirit walking effects your overall play time, and how that effects your wallet. In this journal I provide details regarding the lifespan of characters in Chronicles of Elyria, and touch on the "Death Toll" that's applied to your character any time they spirit walk.
Hidden staircases, trapped doors, and underground chambers bring out the imagination in all of us. These are just a few of the reasons player-made housing in Chronicles of Elyria is both captivating and compelling.
Build and customize your house and other buildings using Chronicles of Elyria's player-created blueprints and modular housing. Also, learn how houses help store your extra inventory, make survival easier, and support CoE’s unique family system.
In this week's design journal, we’re going to take a look at how Chronicles of Elyria continues to push the envelope with a system of research-driven technology which lets players determine the direction of research, while allowing us to monitor the rate at which technology is evolving. This ensures we have the technology ready when the players are ready for it.
On November 6th, 2015 the Chronicles of Elyria community reached 10,000 accounts! That is explosive growth for us and marks the 50% achievement of our community goals! It took us one month to reach our first 2k members, two months to reach our first 5k community members, and just one more month to reach the next 5k! Each month brings us closer to our goals, and closer to our Kickstarter!

In Part 2 of this two-part seris we’re going to talk about how Chronicles of Elyria reduces the barrier to entering new crafting professions and allows you to be a Producer from the start. We’ll also talk about the unique elements of crafting skills such as skill challenges, item specialization, component-based construction, and how we deal with non-renewable resources.
Community member BicycleWalrus aka DM21 Gaming has posted, what we believe to be, the first full-length "First Look" into the currently announced features of Chronicles of Elyria. His energy is obvious, his excitement palpable, and his enthusiasm for our game is topped only by the devs themselves. Click Read More to watch his video First Look!
In part one of this two-part series on "Skills and the Skill System" we're going to talk about how Chronicles of Elyria uses division of labor to allow players to focus on just the areas of the game they want to. After that we'll talk about the different skill categories, how skill hierarchies work, and the multiple ways players can advance their skills.
This week the Chronicles of Elyria community website hit over 5,000 members! This is an important milestone for us as it marks the point in which we’re 25% of the way toward building a community of 20,000 people - the minimum size we feel necessary for a viable crowd funding campaign.
In this week's design journal we're goign to talk about how contracts give power back to the players, enabling an infinite number of character-driven occupations. The foundation for marriages, guilds, trade agreements, in-game mail systems, families, and even governments, contracts make Chronicles of Elyria one of the first true sandbox MMOs.
In this week’s design journal, we’re going to take a look at the final screen of character creation: “Character Customization” and talk about how your family selection impacts your physical appearance, inherited attributes, regional skills, and surnames. We’ll conclude this week’s journal by looking at how CoE enables character customization to extend beyond the character creation screen.
Families in Chronicles of Elyria serve many of the same purposes as guilds in other MMOs. They provide a small, supportive social structure with a sense of identity, as players recognize themselves as being part of a family, a noble house, or a dynasty. They tie into the game's progress system by allowing you to pass resources you've gathered over a lifetime onto your heirs. And finally, they provide starting resources, a residence, and a source of learning in the early part of the game.

Interested players are coming from over a hundred different countries, speaking over 75 different languages and bringing with them a wealth of enthusiasm and excitement for the world we are creating.

In this week’s journal, we’ll focus on what happens to your character while they’re alive. We’ll talk about how the passage of time is measured, how time effects your character, how long you can expect to live, and finally, how you can get the most out of your character’s lifespan by leveraging offline play.

On Monday, July 27th at 9am EDT startup game company Soulbound Studios announced development of their innovative new
MMORPG titled "Chronicles of Elyria". The public announcement came in the form of a Feature on community news website MMORPG.com.

Development of a large game project, especially one like Chronicles of Elyria, takes a lot of resources - both human and financial. Funding such a game has traditionally come from investors or publishers, but recent projects have demonstrated the viability of crowdfunding. In order to have a successful campaign you need a flexible, powerful reward system. In this post I'll be talking about Influence Points - what they are, how you get them, and what they're used for.
This started out as the second part of a two-part journal post that was going to cover Influence Points. However, I wanted to lead with a status update on the chat system and it ended up being a full journal post all by itself. So in this developer journal I'm going to do a deep dive into the chat system.
Time has flown by the last three months as I dove head first into my new role as Software Engineering Lead at Microsoft. The transition from developer to Lead, during one of the busiest times of year, lead to extended work weeks with late nights and more than a little stress. The end result was very little time to work on Chronicles of Elyria. However, the dust is beginning to settle...
It's now the end of December so it's time for my monthly dev journal. In my first developer journal I announced the beginning of Chronicles of Elyria - a prototype MMO in the very early stages of development. As the website and project is/was only known by a small handful of friends and family it needed little explanation. However, as more people are hitting the website it's time I share a bit more information about the game.
It is said the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. So it is true with Chronicles of Elyria. Fourteen years ago, while playing Ultima Online and other text-based Multi-User Dungeons (MUDs), I had an idea for an online, massively multiplayer game that had not yet come to pass.
