Layaway Now Available

By Vye

Hail, Elyrians!

Today we release our long-awaited layaway functionality to the store! This update comes with some other goodies too: most notably the EP tables.

The Laya-Ways

Some of you may be familiar with layaway in the Real World™, where you take a bunch of stuff you want to a counter, put down some minimum amount of money for the store to hold it, and then receive said items once you have paid the full amount (plus the layaway fee). Layaway for us is essentially the same thing, except we are not charging an additional fee. The minimum amount you must put down is 10%.

We know there are some rather desirable things available on the store, and some of them are kinda pricey, but we don’t want that to stop folks from being able to get what they want and support us at the same time! If you would like to lock in your product tier now and spread the payments out then layaway is for you!

Figure 1 – Layaway your preferred tier
Please note that additional payments must be done in multiples of 10% also.

In regard to using your earned IP the same-as-cash for layaway, it ended up being more complicated than we had anticipated so that will be coming next week. I didn't want to hold up the entire update so, if you are wanting to use IP you got from overspend or friend referrals to purchase something on layaway, you'll be able to use it soon. It won't stop you from using cash now to lock-in a product tier—you can just use your IP to cover a later layaway increment.

Which brings up a good point about how flexible our merchant Xsolla is; you can make each increment with a different payment type. Start out with PayPal, use your IP for another bit, then all your gift cards from the holidays, then finish it off with a credit card!

Exposition Items

Head over to the EP tables, you'll see several sections to peruse

  • Residential Buildings
  • Commercial Buildings
  • Profession Packs
  • Transportation
  • Furniture

You want houses for your farm? We got that!
A modest library for your city? Consider it done!
A two-story Paper Mill with a stone first floor and wooden second floor? No problem!
How about a cart? And a mule? How about a pair you can breed!
What about your castle’s dream furniture? Absolutely!

You can now see the EP items in the EP table that you can totally buy with your EP once the EP store opens in mid-November! For now, you can see everything you will be able to get with your EP but not use it just yet.

A River Runs Through It

Something else I wanted to touch upon, while we're talking about creating your dream settlement, is the price of land. In Elyria, as in the real world, some land is just more valuable than others. A farm will have better crops on rich soil, a castle is more fortified with cliffs around it, a mountain with iron veins will provide better than if it were rife with limestone. So during Exposition, land will be worth different amounts.

Figure 1 – Monopoly™ has different land costs
Different land prices is not a new concept

More details will come on that when we have worked out a few more aspects of the design, but I wanted to give you a heads up now. You may want to mentally prepare that a couple extra parcels may be necessary in case your ideal location ends up sitting on richer land.

Other things of note that Caspian and ZRO worked super hard on

  • For clarity, IP has been renamed to EP everywhere it’s supposed to be
  • Took off the old Kickstarter page
  • Fixed a bug in page titles and user birthdate
  • Those who bound their Kickstarter account to their CoE account after the store went live can now use the store
  • Total Influence has been fixed for those that had incorrect values
  • People who pledged on Kickstarter for less than $25 have had their donations converted to store credit so they can be used to purchase add-ons.
  • The receipt page has been updated to show layaway payments and discounted package prices
  • Oh, and did I mention that layaway has been added to the online store?

This game sounds great and the concept is very attractive. I have one piece of advice and im going to tell you this out of honest concern. I dont care how long it takes, do not rush this release! The biggest issue with so many games like this or open map games have been rushed and pushed out to the public way before they should have. The community is tired of rushed games because companies are so worried about a budget and put pressure on the devs to release faster then necessary and it destroys the game. Take all the time in the world cause this game has so much potential to be a casual game for players that could be legitimate fun but if you rush it and dont take care of it, you will see nothing but another failed game. Side note, open it up to consoles cause for console users this is a type of game not really available to that side of the community.

it wont be available on anything but a PC as we didnt hit that stretch goal. Opening up to consoles would be a massive delay on the game. id rather they just didnt do that.

After the game has had a full release and has been out for some time, a console release isn't that bad of an idea. There wont be a delay if they finish the game, along with patches overtime, then choose to involve console.

Will there be in game ways to improve the land you're on for farming? Obviously, if you don't have an iron mine near you, you can't magically make one appear... But you could fertilize land, or ... something to improve it....?

It should be working now..I just bought the merchant for $150 though i did pay straight away. My first attempt didnt go through (i paid via paypal) the second attempt went through no problem. Now i just cant wait to get started. I have been following this game for months now.

Are we going to get a chance to see the new tiers before the old ones go out?

I would love to see them before so I can not pay for a tier then see the new setup ones that better match what I really want.

Bludragon - 5 months ago

Ok so i just put a tier on layaway but realized that what i really wanted was the next one up. Is there a way i can upgrade it? Or would i have to cash in the current one and start over?

I changed mine Bludragon. I gave back my previous Tier and the money automatically was refunded. But to my account. I then used it to buy the next Tier and used party of the money from the previous layaway.

I have a question about layaway. If you start a layaway and decide you don't want to go to a higher tier and you cancel it do you just go back to your previous tier?

You can convert your money in layaway into ep or you can get one of tiers available at that time, that you have the money for at that point, meaning you only lock down the tier you are paying layaway for all the others might change either in cost or in assets.

what i am asking is if i was to stop my current layaway would it just go back to the tier i was on previous for me it was the eb ursaphant. i already know that the money put on the layaway would be turned into ep

I have an off the cuff kind of question, let's say I want to have a vineyard and make wine and distill some of it too. Would I have to buy a Farming package for my vineyard, a Cook package for my wine making and an Alchemist package for my distillation? I guess I could buy the grapes to make the wine, but i'm sure not too many people will have grapes for sale.

FenixFireSage - 5 months ago
@Egore:

You can always hire NPC alchemists, cooks, and farmers to work for you. Your NPC family may also live/work at the vineyard and have the necessary skills.

Seems like there are mixed opinions, but personally I think it's fairly well thought out. It does need further clarification, but as you've quite rightly highlighted, the EP store is simply a preview at the moment, and both the detail and content may well change before November. There are some unanswered questions over the "room kits" having total prices greater than the sum of the parts. There are other questions about the bedroom kits. People may need a breakdown of costs to add rooms if needed, in addition to furnishings. Dimensions of buildings, military buildings, farm buildings, external structures. There are many unanswered questions. I would propose answers, but many may come down to the models you use as assets and their dimensions.

Having run some simple stats over the residential buildings for example, you can conclude that of the stone buildings, the shack is the least cost effective as you'd expect, and the manor is the most cost effective. However, the cottage is currently the second most cost effective for coverage.

The Cost of Breeding

Many people have complained about the high costs of breeding pairs. I should highlight first of all that many of the tiers include an animal. Think back to the price of the tier you signed up to. Would you be entirely happy if the rewards you got with your tier were devalued to the point they became worthless? The price certainly seems to imply that obtaining breeding pairs is a difficult task, more so as you go further up the chain. Domesticating and training animals is no simple task for some creatures. What benefit can you gain from the price being high? Well, a higher price is likely to reduce the competition. If you want to run a breeding program and build up a herd, your animals will retain high values. People will actively look for your corral because there will be limited numbers of breeders to be found. In essence, they have secured the short term returns of your investment. They may just be animals, but in essence, you have there a complete functional business. The EP prices reflect that simple fact.

Variable costs of land

Most people will have ideas of what they want to achieve, and what they need to do so. How would you feel if you started out, looking to spend your hard earned EP, only to discover that greedy Dukes had claimed all the valuable resources in the counties, and that not even Counts or Barons had a look in? Elevating resource values proportionately should help to ensure that it doesn't happen and that interests are spread to some degree. You might well spend a huge chunk of your EP securing prime farmlands, or gold rich hills. An investment that will no doubt see heavy returns and demand. However, once more, the plot itself becomes a viable business. The EP price may reflect that fact. There should be sufficient resources in the lands to last many years ahead. A spread of plot values may mean that some plots are cheap, while others offer a long term gain.

The prices and opportunities in the land may well mean that we will all reassess our initial plans and embrace new opportunities. I for one signed up as a Baron, but some part of me still yearns for prime farmlands and a nice welcoming tavern. I'll have to wait and see what opportunities arise. If fate should reveal new opportunities for any of us, we will most likely all want to set a new course. Life is after all an adventure.

You may want to mentally prepare that a couple extra parcels may be necessary in case your ideal location ends up sitting on richer land.

There seems to be a degree of confusion regarding this statement so it would be nice if it was clarified.

Of course it's understandable that land have different value, however, it is disappointing if EP parcels aren't exempted as initially expected.

If it really does mean that you will need several EP parcels for certain parcels then what is presented in the store at the moment is misleading. When it says 1 parcel you would expect to get 1 parcel. Thus if SBS really want to go through with this then those should be renamed to land vouchers or something instead.

How long do we have to pay off our Layaway Tiers?

AdinX - 5 months ago

Layaway is great, I'm sort of on the verge of being able to afford the Ursaphant rider, and my friend is on the fence about being able to buy any tier. With 10% of our respective tiers instead, we should both be able to play on Beta, and at least play on my account to check out the Alpha.

I noticed the EP tables are still a little wonky- no buttons for the different page options, the unformatted image on furniture, unless my page isn't loading correctly. However there are still spots with IP/EP, isn't IP done away with?

FenixFireSage - 5 months ago
@AdinX:

If you clear your browser's cached images and files you should get the correct view. If that does not work there is a forum thread for store bugs at https://chroniclesofelyria.com/forum/topic/12472/store-bugs. IP is still here, EP is simply any purchased influence which can only be used for Exposition items. IP is now only earned by being influential... inviting friends, creating content such as blogs, etc and (as mentioned above) will also be usable towards paying off a pledge layaway.

Mule's are the sterile offspring of a donkey and a horse, immersion ruined. I can believe weird elephant bears, i can even believe you made another bear/otter hybrid because having a bunch of bear things to ride is cool, but why are you doing this. When you don't use the proper language to refer to things then your players will have a hard time trying to understand the world you are creating. Look at how guilds are forming around the concepts put forth in other MMO's, where you wanted them to be more akin to medieval and early modern period guilds, where their focus was not on land control, but instead upon their trades. You also called the silhouette of a massive draft/charger a Thoroughbred, it makes me place my face-palm to see the cavalier brashness with which you use your native tongue. If you are making this game 'for the lulz' then you have done a wonderful job with trolling me, it has taken me a long time to bite, but you seemed genuinely excited to offer pairs of mules to breed, and that I cannot abide. It seems as though you prefer to function in a world where the truth is what you make it instead and just expect your community to accept falsehoods as truths as they must believe you are knowledgeable on all the subjects broached in the making of your game.

You have set out to make a pair of Asses in COE, and it seems as though you have succeeded in the form of you and I

FenixFireSage - 5 months ago
@flaard:

A mule has 31 chromosomes from a donkey and 32 from a horse. Mare mules have been known in rare occasions to give birth to foals when impregnated by a horse. It is completely "unknown" if any male mules can impregnate female donkeys (however similar hybrids in the past have eventually evolved to breed true). The key cause of mule "sterility" is the division of 63 chromosomes is uneven. It is possible in nature for chromosomes to both be lost and even gained thru natural mutation. Scientists are working on artificially creating a placebo (i.e. blank or dummy) chromosome which would allow the division to be even. In a world in which wolf/rabbit hybrids (with 39 wolf and 22 rabbit chromosomes) exist, a mule with 1 extra chromosome is not a far stretch of the imagination. Especially when we could be able to breed mules in reality in a few years (assuming someone has not already succeeded). It is entirely possible that every creature in Elyria has another type of organelle (similar to the Mitochondria) which aids in cell separation by creating filler chromosomes and allowing any type of hybrid to be born. The horse/donkey hybrids of Elyria should have characteristics of both Hinnies and Mules and probably a more uniquely Elyrian name.

Thanks for the update guys. A few questions :

  • How long do we have to pay off the full amount on any given layaway?
  • Do you use only actual paid amounts or do you also include future layaway payments in the total amount ticker in the store?
  • Can we have a separate option for land parcels only instead of having to buy them in packs?

Thanks!

She's not much of a gamer, however I did end up spending millions in UO cause she loved the house building aspect. She must have redesigned my house 50 times over the course of that game. Maybe I can get her interested in something here :)

I would assume you could get her interested in something. I mean if nothing else there is building, so you could let her decorate your castle/house. Not to mention the fact you could be married in game if she got it XD.

One problem i notice with the Layaway though is that the money you put in is locked to the tier you layaway and cant be used for other tiers in the store until you fulfill that agreement. but what if you have second thoughts and just want to use the money you already paid in to buy a lesser package?

There is a option when you go to the tier you put a payment down for to click exchange for credits or something. I think thats how you can change your order. Cus you will just get credit added to your account which you then can spend on another tier. Or thats what it seemed like to me (haven't tried it)

I have one question about the layaway system. Lets say I wanna go for the merchant tier ($150 total) it says when I click on the layaway option that I can pay for example 50% now ($75) but in the update it says you will have to pay in sections of 10% after the initial payment. Is it then possible for the second payment (next month for me) that I could pay the other 50% in one go? Or do I have to pay them in actual sections of 10% ($15 per transaction) because that would result in quite some creditcard fees. Thanks in advance! :D

William M. - 5 months ago
@Playerezzie:

Any increment of 10%. So you will be able to pay the full 50% if you so choose.
