Anything can be thrown at your enemy, but that does not make them throwing weapons, designed and intended to be throwned. Those were javelins, spears, throwing knife and axes, throwing sticks and small throwing weapons. As i try to focus on the odd and rare weapons i'll talk about the Roman pilum, the African throwing knifes, the american native tomahawk, the Incan war bola, the Indian chakram and the Australian aboriginal boomerang.
The pilum
The ultimate in javelin weapon, composed of two parts, a well crafted piercing head and a wood shaft. Both were bound by 4 pins, 3 made of iron, one made of wood and easy to break. The idea was to render the pilum unusable after it was thrown, preventing it to be thrown back, and that the pilum would embed itself into either the enemy body or shield, making it difficult to use, enemy often discarding their shield once a pilum embedded itself in it.
African throwing knifes
Each tribe had an individual way of manufacturing their knifes, the many hooked and curved blades were intended to catch onto shields and parrying weapons and swing over to reach the target behind, bypassing defenses.
The Tomahawk
Be the head made of stone or steel it is the same weapon, an axe with a sharp head and a longer than normal shaft. it could be used in close combat or thrown or even as a chopping tool. Some of the tomahawk had a hollow shaft and also doubled as smoking pipes, but those were less durable than normal ones. They were often decorated with feathers and threads or leather bands.
Incan war Bola
The bola is a weapon made of 3 balls bound by a cord to a rope, thrown at the enemy the bola entangle the target, chocking it if the neck is hit or slowing to stopping it in case of legs. The difference between a war bola and a normal bola is the nature of the balls. a normal bola use leather pouches filled with sand or grain to stun and entangle but not harm or kill. The war bola on the other hand use stones or metal and can even use spiked versions of the ball, to not only entangle and stun, but also disable and wound the target. Incan were using copper balls for their war bola.
Chakram
A Nihang warrior, he carries several chakrams on his turban.
The chakram come in different size but only one shape, they are sharpened metal rings. they were spun up to speed on the finger like a frisbee before being thrown. As the chakram is sharpened on all its length it can not be used in close combat as a full moon would.
Australian aboriginal boomerang
national museum of Australia
The boomerang is a returning weapon, if the target is missed, the boomerang comes back and can be thrown again. They are blunt throwing weapon, aka throwing sticks but they have far greater range and power. Somewhat to a lesser degree, the boomerang also possess the ability to bypass defenses as the African throwing knife does, but only roughly on 25% of the cases.
Elyrian transposition
Those are a lot of very different weapons to try to fit into Elyria.
I'd say the pilum is a Hrothi weapon, they are well organized warriors, disciplined, perfect for formation tactics so they would deliver a barrage of pilum , and if they only hit shields and force the enemy to discard them , then when retreating into the tunnels they'll have the upper hand, without shields and limited by the tunnels, enemy would be easy targets for a counter attacking Hrothi.
Even if we have not heard much about them i'd give the African throwing knifes to the Owem, that would give them a little tricky edge for when we'll encounter them, surprise your shield's useless.....
The tomahawk is for me the Brudvir signature weapon, not only axes make sens as they are the tools they work with, i envision the Brudvir a lot more like Native Americans than vikings, at least the non warrior caste. For me the typical Brudvir warrior would be equipped with a tomahawk and a long knife that they may be able to dual wield, and depending on the prey either a spear for big strong game like a bear or a boar or a bow, maybe both :)
The bola would be a Janoa weapon, a good weapon to capture live prey or to slow them to keep the hunt going.
and both the chakram and the boomerang would be Waerd weapons.
the boomerang would be hunting and lower class weapon and the chakram the weapon of the elite. As they use a unisex dress code, i guess some kind of hat to hide hairs and some facial feature, the turban can also be used to cover the face and protect against sand and dust storm and would be perfect to carry a few chakrams.
