The primary focus of UrLore will be building out a trade infrastructure throughout the duchy and kingdom. Some of the funds from our trading operations will be used to support our research initiatives which will help our trading activities grow even more. Engineering skills will be heavily needed to build infrastructure and support structure to help the trade flow fast and efficiently, such as roads, waterways, and defensible outposts.
The county government is based on the feudal system, in service to our Liege, Duke Ptero. Positions with the county government and schools will be based on merit & the rule of law, with the Count retaining the ultimate authority (Meteocratic Absolute Monarchy).
The following are non hereditary leaders within the Counts Council:
Warden of the Land
This Warden will survey the county, tracking where settlements are and strategic resources such as farms, mines, and animals are. Other important duties are watching for bandits, dangerous beasts, and reporting criminal activity to the Count and the Warden of Forces. This office may also be involved in survey lands outside the county, possibly including exploratory expeditions across the waters.
Warden of Forces
This Warden will handle the upkeep and training of the local militia, possibly in cooperation with the local barons. They will also act on reports from the Warden of the Land, recruiting local residents as needed. When the Count is summoned by his Liege the Warden will accompany him.
Warden of Words & Knowledge
This Warden will act as an ambassador for the county and conduct diplomatic missions for such things as trade items, military agreements, and scientific or cartographic knowledge. Some skills besides a way with words may be needed in this position. Good scribe skills and a talent for organization will be needed to track and house the county's library.
Warden of Ingots
The Warden of Ingots helps the Count with trade infrastructure and movement. The Warden will coordinate with the Warden of the Land for moving resources around the county and to ensure ample storage for resource and trade items. This includes all land and sea trading opportunities.
All Warden positions also include a monthly stipend depending on skill and tenure, to be used for material needs of the position.
Lay of the Land
There are is no way to know what biome, geography, resources, or population we will have on launch currently. The Grand County of UrLore will be a merger of three counties, with the assumption for now that there will be at least two major settlements (cities).
The settlement with the most resources will become the capital. Inland options will be given more weight because of better security and closer to more trading partners. If that works out then another settlement hopefully on the coast or near a major river will become a secondary trading hub either run by myself or a future mayor.
Capital = Christophs' Perch (hopefully in a mountainous area)
Alt trading hubs = Riversea, Horseford, Three Taverns (one of these)
Life in the county
The countys major focus will be trade, specifically trade over land. There are other counts who have great enthusiasm for sea trading and I'll leave that to them, and take care of actually getting goods to and from their ships. To go along with trading are the major infrastructure needs throughout the county and duchy which I will help invest in. These include roads, canals, bridges, secure warehouses and other needed services (banks, taverns, etc...)
But it’s not only trading we do. We need a populace that has the skills to create things that people want. For that reason I am setting aside a special area within the capital to help my citizens learn new skills at their leisure.
The Bastion ( located in Christophs Perch )
Areas for milling, forging, carpentry, and textiles
Secure (stone) warehouses
A library and map room
Possibly a bank
A large field for demonstrations of inventions and also used for tourneys and training
Subsidised housing for visiting scholars, teachers, guild apprentices and the Bastion workforce
The Bastion will be located in a walled and well defended area near well maintained roads and/or canals. It will not be separated from the city but a portion of it.
The idea of the Bastion is to promote the learning and usage of skills for the greater good of the county. To help with this the county will make small amounts of resources available to those that are learning skills or are crafting items for trade within the county.
