I haven't checked in on the game in a year or so, whats the status of development? Have they had closed alpha? Are they nearing beta? I keep hearing about more kickstarter funding, are they struggling to raise money for development? I see a bunch of dev journals but no clear straight answers.

The Dev Journals do have clear straight answers, as well as entire progress updates. Give them a read through, and you'll see.

The game currently just finished 0.4.0 development, and is currently beginning 0.5.0 development. Caspian has mentioned that these two milestones are perhaps the most important of the entire development process, and the most exciting.

So, hang around for a bit and catch up, You'll probably be surprised at how far along everything actually is!
