The Settlers of Elyria Event Update

By AshKain

My Elyrian friends

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and new years filled with good times and good people. As promised, I wanted to take some time to speak with you about our plans for the Settlers of Elyria event, and what that means for future events and website features.

Let me start with talking about what we are working on. First, we are addressing the fundamental issue with why Settlers buckled under load. This is in part an architectural problem, and part a design problem. We are fixing this issue now that it is well understood. Second, several other bugs did manifest due to planning and testing that turned out to be incomplete. We are working on these, as well as the necessary quality control. Finally, with our added UX and UI team members, we are exploring improvements to the Domain and Settlement Selection map. We are doing all of this so that when we re-launch the event we are delivering work of a higher caliber and quality.

With that said, this means our original product plan for the website and web features has taken a scheduling hit. This is not at all insurmountable, but it means the web team needs to continue planning carefully. As a studio, our main focus is building toward our Pre-Alpha. I am helming our efforts when it comes to online experiences, outside of the game, which means I’m focused on building tools and experiences for all of our backers to be a part of the story and legend of Chronicles of Elyria while the core game team focuses on the Pre-Alpha.

I look forward to sharing more details about future events, as well as progress on Settlers in the very near future. It is important that we show you, rather than tell you, we are making progress. So my next update will be when we can show you the efforts we have made, and the great results of our hard work.

With that, I’ll take my leave, and get back to work.

P.S. thank you all for the warm welcome. :)

@panchi - settlers of elyria is an opportunity to buy a settlement, county, or duchy and requires a bloodline account as a minimum starting point. As a non exposition backer, you can participate in the other events they have whenever the next is announced. Simply watch the Forums for the official announcement. I have to be honest, there is still far earlier and better communication in the discord channel, so I suggest joining us there if you haven't already.

How do you play this to partake in the events I've backed this and still haven't had any way to participate

Really intrigued by all the non-backers "0-day accounts" suddenly having an opinion here :D

Here's for hoping CoE manages to remain more sock puppet account free than Eve was/is.

i hate to burst your bubble because i would LOVE for this game to come out in 2020 also but in my opinion the likelihood of it coming out this year is very unlikely if by 'comes out' you are referring to the post directly above yours and mean release of the game

this is an image from back in Sep 2016 - three and a half years ago, showing us where we were and what still needed to be done

i used to show that image with the 'we are here' comment/arrow back in late 2016 and in 2017 to answer people asking on the forums where the project was in terms of development

at that time if the timeline was questioned we were told that they had no reason to change their expectations of putting something into our hands by the end of 2017 and those members of the community who were saying it would take longer were told that they had no idea how much had already been accomplished and that the studio believed that they had no reason to change their time estimate (even though the simple math of that image and the date it was released shows that dec 2017 was just not possible to meet)

note that we still don't have website 3.0, the IP Store (now EP store) shceduled to open Nov 15, 2016 never did open and the only thing ticked off on that list below that is D&SS, though even that isn't complete if you take into consideration that Settlers of Elyria is an extension of D&SS where people can purchase domains under a dutch auction system

the 12-15 month delay is presumably for alpha I, alpha II, beta I and beta II

i firmly believe that the entire team at SBS is dedicated, passionate and is working hard to bring the project to reality, however i think even the most fanatical of optimists has to realize what has been accomplished so far, and what still needs to be done, and that it ain't coming out in 2020, and in my opinion based upon the rate of progress, late 2021 is possible but unlikely

the 12-15 month delay is presumably for alpha I, alpha II, beta I and beta II

KoE starts between Alpha 1 and Alpha 2. Also, Beta 2 can be running concurrently with Expo.

Note: From Discord, so might change
5 MAR 18 D-CCR

Beta is after KoE, and after most of our other stuff. Beta 2 is likely even after Exposition.

gary55624 - 2 weeks ago
@Dleatherus:

Early 2021 is the earliest I see us getting into alpha. The game is supposed to have a life span inbetween each verson from Alpha 1, Alpha 2, Beta 1, and Beta 2. Which all together is supposed to account for 4 generations before the game launch. I don't see Omega Launch, launching before the year 2024.

Master Geralt - 2 weeks ago

Im very interested in this game

Looks good and I just want to say to the team "Well Done Guys and Keep up the hard work" :)

I know first hand what working with UE4 is like, so I know the effort and time that has gone into this.

Great to have updates.. But real question is When will we be able to play the game?

I'd rather like to see the release date of when we can play it.

I've never required Discord for updates. I check the website and forums once a week, or two weeks, at least. I usually end my night procrastin... researching the days news cycle while surfing through the forums, which helps a lot.

Your best bet will be monitoring this category, as there probably will be a post here prior to SoE going live again. The best idea from SbS side would be sending out emails to everyone, but yeah.

If you want to make absolutely sure not to miss this, glue yourself to discord.

Unfortunately for some SBS makes that avenue essential and then restrict people’s access for arbitrary reasons

It's not essential.

What’s with all the insults? Can’t handle the heat on the boards or what’s up?

You can set up said alarms for any website yourself. IF said content gets updated. But as of late, most remained within Discord and was only reposted by community members to the boards later.

If you want as much time as possible to prepare yourself for SoE (in case of expensive and/or contested domains a good idea, probably), going by how things went up until now, you’ll have to glue yourself to discord.

The first notions of an imminent re-release won’t be pinged; maybe not even pinned. You’ll have to catch those yourself.

Well, we probably can ask SbS to make sure that

a) the official re-release will be posted to the official boards and send by email simultaneously first and only

b) that it comes at least with a week prior notice

c) and they stop hinting at and hyping for it coming on other venues prior to the official post

Then everyone would know one just has to relax and wait for that post / email instead of feeling the need to hunt down information snippets on discord.

Does this mean we cannot now buy any Domains as I see buying a Domain is greyed out? Schedules are called Schedules for a reason, especially when people are paying money to support them; this is why I decided not to spend any more money to obtain a Mayor place; I see Counties for sale as well and that is also greyed out from buying. How are people supposed to keep informed? Is there a mailing list? I expected to look at Domains towards February to purchase when the prices dropped; now I have no clue when this will restart again; we are supposed to come here and visit the website? The last email I got was almost 2 years ago. What you should have done is have a MOCK test of the Settler program and none of this would have happened. When people spend real money on something they expect a return for their investment. Make schedules and stick to them please thank you. (Oh yeah and THIS is why I waited to spend real money; I am not surprised and hopefully Settlers will be back and confirmations of people who spent money to obtain Virtual Land will get it before they die or get a refund.) (EDIT: I forgot I have CoE on Discord ... it isnt a wonder I havnt been there for awhile).

CrazyDiamond - 1 month ago

At this point in time I have serious doubts that the dev team as it stands today is up to the real-world task of bringing to life Chronicle of Elyria. I was shocked that Settlement failed so completely. Soulbound Studios no doubt brought to bear the total available bandwidth of intelligence and ability at their disposal to make Settlement a success. They were utterly poned by the reality of what running a major mmo is all about. I hope this is a turning point in their game plan. The vision, as it stands, is a in danger of falling to mediocrity.

Corvinusx - 1 month ago
@CrazyDiamond:

Crazy, I wish anything we said mattered. No matter how much we complain nothing will get done sooner. They have bit off way more than they can chew and it is very apparent. At this point all we can do is hope they have learned from their mistakes. And maybe if they ever make future games they will not be this bad at it.

kajoreh - 1 month ago

Perhaps they have hired somebody who can get the things done that need doing?

As he himself said, the proof is in the work, not the words.

So we have to wait a little while longer. If this game gives us everything as promised/potential to be, than the wait is worth it. I'm a patient person for things that are well worth the time and patience.

Patience is fine, but let's be realistic, it could well take another 4 or 5 years until the game releases.

Sure, backers will gain access before then, but for those waiting on the complete "Elyria Experience" it will take the patience of Job.

Cheers.

As a backer, I can't really put my two cents in the topic of those that are not backers. Meaning I can understand the frustration of the ever changing timelines. But I'm not gonna say that I totally understand it. They have been pretty upfront when things go sideways. Yes, they've made a few mistakes along the way, like the Settlement Selection and D&SS. Stress tests and Mock tests are valuable. And would have saved some headaches that I'm sure everyone at SBS is experiencing. With all the different game mechanics they are implementing into the game its no wonder why they have had set backs. That being said, the website portion of this shouldn't really be that difficult to complete. IMO. But I'm not a coder, (me and algorithms don't get along real well) and won't pretend that i know everything that goes into making things work. I have a basic comprehension.

To those whining about "exploring improvements to the Domain and Settlement Selection map": I guess you haven't used it. It's functional, but somewhat clunky, and there have been several complaints of erroneous selection along with numerous complaints of hard-to-access or misleading information. If the new guys in town want to use their expertise and experience to make something better, I say "let them."

The tool will not go away following Settlers of Elyria, but will continue to be used and be a drawing card for potential new players, and may well evolve into a tool for some purpose not yet announced.

Pendulum - 1 month ago

We aren't remotely interested in "something of higher caliber" for something which has still not even been delivered. You've failed to deliver for most of 2019. At this point we are only interested in the deliverables so we can move on with our lives.

This is not good. Fix the issues with your current model, stick to your scope, and get it out the door already. We've been strung along far too long. This whole DSS debacle started relatively early in 2019 and needs to be done with. We're waiting with baited breath...

Belteyn - 1 month ago

Update appreciated, but as some others have mentioned, SOE does not have to look good, it just has to work. Also why does it need to look good if it's kinda redundant after all settlements claimed? Fix bugs yes, but don't waste time on cosmetics.

SinOfWrath - 1 month ago
@Belteyn:

I believe they said they were improving the map, not working on Cosmetics. Improving the map could be as simple as more detailed borders, easier time selecting the correct location, and other such functionality. These would be improvements that would make the experience easier to deal with.

Beyond that, this may not be a one off map. They may need to use it for other purposes or refer to it for other reasons.

Scipion - 1 month ago

Thank you for the update! there is nothing worse than a lack of information. Espacially while waiting for something that shall happen. I am waiting for neighbours and perhaps a Count where I live,

Its the first time in over a year I have felt there have come some honest words from the studio. Not just yeah we tested it and it worked great so it's just a minor bug. I hope this is the first step in a good effort by the studio to get their shit together and focusing on the correct things.

That being said let the past be the past, and start the new year with a clean slate.

Thanks for the update! Looking forward to some glimpses of the new UI/UX team, and I’m glad to hear that underlying design/architecture problems will be addressed.

On a related topic: any chance we’ll see some API functionality added to help further reduce site loads during data-heavy events (and put the community dissension re: “bots” in the rearview mirror)?

Zelcovian - 1 month ago

I wonder if AshKain would share failed UI image examples from time to time... that way the community see's the work going on, it wouldn't be anything still viable which would impact production... and then we as a community could upvote / down vote the images and talk about what we like / dislike of the failures ?

Greetings AshKain,

Extending my hand and shaking your hand out of respect as a sign if welcoming you back. Thank you for taking the time to give us yet another update on where things stand as of now. To be honest, many of us expected and hoped what you just outlined is exactly what needs to be happening and should happen in order to get wheels moving forward.

It seems to me, difficult choices have been made at CoE, but they were necessary in order to get things back on track.

Responsible people, sometimes have to make difficult choices if they want to achieve better results. The fact that you guys took the time to evaluate the situation and have made right decisions tells me you are all taking this seriously. And that in itself speaks volumes as where this project is headed.

After reading the last few posts from CoE on this site, I for one, feel much better about the outcome and the future of this project. And am even more confident that things will improve for the better.

Couple days ago a friend who was looking forward to the Settlers event was deployed to a hot spot, disappointed that he didn’t get a chance to find a spot on the settlers map. I told him, dude, you get your rear back to USA safe and sound, and one way or another I will make sure you will have a spot of your liking on that bloody settlers map, so one day you can relax and enjoy your game, ‘cause am sure CoE staff will get it going soon.

Now am even more certain that my promise to him will come true. So don’t let some setbacks at CoE headquarters discourage you, focus on the future and on the good days to come, and you will get it right.

i could appreciate this post before christmas but right now i don't know exactly what i m feeling... Lets say, I spend more time and came back to CoE for SoE (even i pledged at that time). And after silence and christmas break i suppose i was wondering something more tangible !

Furthermore i 'm not totally understand the concept to go further with exploring improvements to the Domain and Settlement Selection map, I mean most of us just want to pick up a settlement and build the community aroud that and imagine what could be the futur ;)

But GL with your current idea and i hope we will see soon the result.

Juris Primus - 1 month ago

Has there been serious thought put into the possibility of leap frogging SoE behind another event in order to take the time pressure off, and focus on getting it to the quality both the studio and the new backers are looking for?

Not a popular option with many I'm sure, but I know some in the studio wanted the end date to be Jan 31. Unless you are going to give full credit for the days already passed, then the part of the event in which prices drop over time is going to be seriously negatively impacted. It looks like the best way to give the SoE event the "full experience" and still not interfere with whatever is on tap for Feb, is to keep the Feb event on track, and push this back until it's ready.

Gunnlang - 1 month ago

Finally, with our added UX and UI team members, we are exploring improvements to the Domain and Settlement Selection map. We are doing all of this so that when we re-launch the event we are delivering work of a higher caliber and quality.

It looked fine before. I don't see a need to make it look even more shiny, for an event that only last 45 days. So many other important things to work on. Over spending too much time on SoE.

Well here's the thing. They can't promote CoE as a groundbreaking game by starting with an uninspiring, mediocre web application.

The domain maps and our interactions with them through a web interface are the first products of CoE. If we see no innovation there, if it's just fine but not great, where and how can anything groundbreaking later emerge? We need to see creative ideas and innovation at work from the very beginning if we are to believe they possess the talent to do so with more complex systems later on. It just doesn't happen the other way around.

Also keep in mind that even after SoE ends, the domain map isn't going away. As the very first consumer-facing aspect of Chronicles of Elyria, I think it is imperative that they present a product as inspiring as their ideas for the game and not simply settle for mediocrity.

Also keep in mind that even after SoE ends, the domain map isn't going away. As the very first consumer-facing aspect of Chronicles of Elyria, I think it is imperative that they present a product as inspiring as their ideas for the game and not simply settle for mediocrity.

^ This. Also, it seems like a good way to display, for the community, some of the talents and potential that the new team members bring to the table.

So much THIS. Make simpler events and more complex game.

The communication is appreciated. It's a shame that SoE will be delayed.

See this is why I have confidence in Elyria over so many AAA games. When SBS drops the ball, they OWN UP TO IT. No BS, no PR spin, no making someone else the bad guy, just a simple "Yeah, that didn't work right...but we learned why. We'll do better this time."

Incredible what a tiny shred of honest accountability will do for your credibility, aye? Stay the course, folks.

Err, I'd agree with you except when the next time rolls around, they drop the ball yet again.

It isn't OK to apologize and keep making mistakes, not the way accountability actually works.

Thank you for staying connected with the community and your informative updates! They are much appreciated.

Question for you though... Is it possible somehow for your team to set up some type of scenario to stress test the website or do you think that unnecessary?

1mmaculateDeception - 1 month ago

Well, I guess this will be a rather quick example of how much of an upgrade to the studio those two new team members are going to be when it comes to what they do to the DSS maps.

This all sounds a bit daunting. Hopefully it is not and wont push back your schedules too much. It had appeared like this was going to be a very busy year.

With that said, this means our original product plan for the website and web features has taken a scheduling hit.

It doesn't need to be made to look super pretty or anything, just as long as it is functional and we have the information we need to make a decision. Do not want unneeded delays.

Straight to the core and direct communication.

Thank you for the update, it has provided some confidence in your abilities already. Hope you deliver and good luck with the cleaning up.

Konlet - 1 month ago

Is Settlers currently the primary focus for the entire team, or is there still concurrent development on pre-alpha and/or other areas?

Good luck guys.

Thank you.

Hopefully the same guy that wrote this is not the same... oh. Never mind. (Hire an English major)

We understand. SBS is entering its 4th year soon with a tiny, tiny team making a large, complex game.

The sane among us understand. After all, RDR2 took ten years to make, even with a huge team, a largely prebuilt engine, and tons of assets from prior games.

LUL. "Sane" is an interesting word for it.

@Ashkain

I hope that you are up to the task with events and such as SBS up to this point has drastically underestimated how players think and how we will use the events.

All you guys had to do to fix this was to revert the whole system and offer the packs again for Mayor, Count, duke, king and use the que system for those who purchase those packs rather than this whole free for all chaos. Thats it.

Doing all this extra work for a system we will use once is a waste of resources, time, money, and effort. Talk some sense into the devs man.
