Because they were cheaper to train with... being able to draw a 100+ lb warbow throughout a battle takes years of conditioning and training. Being able to load and fire a musket takes a week of training.

Pretty much gave the basic peasant the ability to point and shoot killing a knight in plate.

The crossbow did this long before the musket.

Yup. Though the crossbow and bodkin-point quarrels originally evolved to defeat chainmail, they work pretty well on other segmented armor. With another evolution in tip design, they worked as well as early guns against plate.
