Moats, and digging in general.

Recently in a developer interview, Jeromy Walsh stated there would be no digging, or basic player level terraforming. This disturbs me...

How can this truly be medieval feudalistic based game without something as integral as a moat, or a fortress hill!?

Over the centuries, some of the most impressive man-made structures have been mounds of dirt, or expertly crafted, kilometers long moats. Ex:

The fact that we can't do something so simple is... Strange too me.

Anyone know a specific reason 'why' the devs have decided to explicitly not include basic terraforming?

Because terraforming is a very costly, very time consuming feature to code.

Also, pre-generated fortresses will exist. I'd expect them to be well located, with moat and drawbridge, etc.

Because it's not "simple." At all.

Look, they've stated that all of the cut features will be put back in in time, just not immediately at launch. Terraforming especially is one that's going to need a load of development for relatively little gain -- on a day-to-day basis, the average player isn't going to be terraforming anything. Now, when it is in, we'll be able to do some cool stuff, but until that time, most people probably won't even miss it.

its part of the stretch goals. They want to make the game playable frist, once its playable, they will add in what you are asking for. They put in the stretch goals at 1.75 Million. it will require more staff then they currently have. It will make it to game, eventually, but unless that goal is met, it wont be in at release.

there was talk that when you place a building from a blueprint, it will create a foundation so that leveling the ground is not needed. Later when tunneling comes out, we will have to level the ground our self.

it is not concluded that we can or can't dig moats, the last info is that they(SBS) are talking about it, if to implement or not, so it's useless to complain about it, we will see in time.

If there's anything to be learned from Minecraft, the problem is that players WILL terraform everything and turn an orderly world into a pile of swiss cheese. It takes only one bot to dig forever and ruin a server.

Perhaps they'll have trench/moat objects that can be built rather than terraforming proper.

it will no be easy to terraform as in minecraft

Hello, i am trying to write a fancfic and need help with it since english is not my first langague: https://chroniclesofelyria.com/forum/topic/8070/help-nedded you can read it here: https://chroniclesofelyria.com/forum/topic/7546/the-spirit-of-the-void-chapter-3-is-out-0605

What I mean by digging is simply up/down level changes for landscaping, nothing insane... Simple mesh deformations are kind-of... The most basic thing to implement. Idk what you think is so hard about that.

I'm just paraphrasing from the Kickstarter now, but the reasoning was something along the lines of "All our programmers are 100% tied up until launch. Adding one more task to any of them will mean we won't make launch in time, with the current budget. We need more money to hire more programmers if the feature is to be implemented. If that goal is not met, the feature will come at a later date".

While not the most difficult task to implement, I'm sure they're pretty busy with a lot of "relatively easy" tasks.

Boo, I want moats. Hmpf.

This is not a new announcement PostMortem, it does indeed bother me that we don't have it but it's been a stretch goal for some time.

Maybe worth checking some of the ongoing chatter on it here
