The Talqamar
County, City, University Center
A Research Community for Port Royale and the Kingdom of Alesia
The Talqamar is the center of research for the Duchy of Port Royale, with patronage from the Duke and many of the Counts. Dedicated to advancing all of the fields essential to our maritime Duchy and its economy.
The Talqamar also hosts an RP community exploring the philosophical history of Elyria.
If striving for Eudamonia, a human life fully lived and achieving its natural potential, means for you an intellectual life pushing the bounds of knowledge and wisdom in Elyria, then you may have found your home.
History:
In antiquity, learned men would gather on this hill to observe the moon and stars and determine important dates. Observation of the solstices and equinoxes and festival dates were based on the stars as seen from here. As important dates approached, those who could read meaning in the skies would come to this place, known simply as “the place to view the moon.”
As time passed and the methods for observing the stars improved, infrastructure started to appear. The learned men made faster observations, and had time to discuss other matters while waiting on the skies to turn. The site became a gathering place for early philosophers to discuss what we now consider astronomy, mathematics, engineering, philosophy and law.
Hundreds of years later, language has moved on as languages do and the meaning is largely lost to time. The buildings remain, and the learned still come from far and wide to discuss the Great Problems of the day at a place now known simply as “the Talqamar.”
Major Facilities:
The grounds of the Talqamar cover the ancient hill from which it takes its name, and spread down towards the sea. The main facilities which constitute the majority of the work performed here:
The Observatory
Dedicated to “perfecting the art of navigation.”
Research on:
Tinkering (e.g. telescopes, compasses, chronometers, theodolites, orreries)
Cartography (making more accurate charts, making charts faster, faster/more accurate surveying methods)
Astronomy:
Take any observations of the stars as needed to aid in supporting navigation, such as creating nautical almanacs
includes Astrology as the stars relate to the Akhasic Records
Navigation (using the tools from Tinkering and charts from Cartography and, if applicable, almanacs from astronomy)
Teaches students in the above fields, including advanced navigation on both land and sea.
A separate write up for this org is already drafted.
The Royale Maritime Academy
Researches ship and ship related technology (e.g. larger hulls, greater endurance, scurvy-like disease prevention, more efficient sails and rigging, etc)
Teaches sailors any skills relevant to handling boats and actually sailing. Basic navigation is taught here.
Depending on domain selection layout and “school” mechanics, may be merged with the Observatory.
The Institute for Ingenuity and Innovation
Dedicated to novel solutions in the crafting community.
Tinkering on topics other than relate to navigation.
Smithing. Techniques will focus on the more unusual, not your standard swords and armor.
Glassblowing
Alchemy, especially as pertains to explosives and fuels.
The Scriptorium
A school dedicated to the art of scribing.
Researches contract “technology”
Teaches:
Scribing: ensure Port Royale and Alesia is well supplied with skilled contract scribes
Deviant: creating forgeries (ie accurate copies) of documents
Bardic: detecting forgeries
RP support for philosophy and literature
Shelters a Great Library, with an emphasis on foreign books due to coastal location.
