Lore and Background

The lands of the Talqamar are set upon the rugged shores of Alesia in the Duchy of Port Royale.

The people here trace their heritage back to the Second Age, though few records survive from such depths of antiquity and many of the connections are surely apocryphal. What is certain, however, is that the culture of the Talqamar is passionately committed to learning and the sciences. This is certainly true of the capital, but the surrounding settlements take similar pride in the intellectual achievements of the community of which they are a critical part.

OOC Details

The county of the Talqamar contains X settlements (number pending domain selection), which have their detailed posts below.

Within the capital, there is a university complex hosting many of the schools of the wider duchy, organized in cooperation with the Port Royale nobility. The largest of these schools have their own posts below as well.

Like any county, the Talqamar has need of a diverse range of citizens and is welcoming of all. Uniquely, or certainly uncommon, among counties, as the host of many of the duchy’s schools, we are very open to being a starter home for players who then take employment elsewhere in Port Royale, Alesia, or the world. We will have systems in place to facilitate movement within Port Royale for students completing their education here.

The Five Schools of the Talqamar

The Talqamar is comprised of Five Major Schools, and employs teachers for all of the supporting tradeskills. These schools all run in support with one or more county within the Duchy of Port Royale.

From the initial occupation of the main hill of the Talqamar in the late 2nd Age, the site has been used for making astronomical observations. As such, the history of the Talqamar is inextricably linked to the foundations of the Observatory. Learned Menn would travel to this site for taking observations of the stars and planets to predict the seasons, festivals and foretell momentous events. As astronomy evolved from an art to a science, more and more infrastructure was needed, and the Observatory was born. As these menn passed the time between observations with philosophical debates, others began to make records of the discussions. From these records, the Scriptorium was founded.

Many years later, as the science of astronomy progressed and needed better and better tools, a thriving community of smiths, glassblowers, and tinkerers found employment in the main settlement. To advance their arts and train the next generation of workers, a new school was born, the Institute for Ingenuity and Innovation.

The last two schools are much newer, founded after the Mad King’s War. The Duke of Port Royale saw need for standardized training of mariners for the navy and merchant fleets, and for advancement of the science of naval architecture. To accomplish this, he founded the Port Royale Maritime Academy. At the same time, the Inventors of the Institute were looking further afield for inspiration in their pursuit of innovation, and found kindred spirits among the botanists of Verdantia and Ameno. Working together, the founded a school dedicated to the alchemical arts, the Crucible.

University and City

Lore and Background

A coastal center of learning since distant antiquity, the Talqamar rests along the coast of the Duchy of Port Royale. Scholars travel from across the realm to share knowledge and advance the knowledge of Mann, to devote their lives to learning and to teaching the next generation. Of particular prominence are the Astronomers of the Observatory, the Inventors of the Institute for Ingenuity and Innovation, the Scribes of the Scriptorium, and the Alchemists of the Crucible.

At the gates of the city, there is a constant stream of scholars coming and going. Newly graduated crafters of all sorts seek their fortune in the guild halls across the duchy. Watchers trek to and from Morskaya in County Rusovich, documenting the movement of stars and making their predictions. Cartographers set out with the latest tools and methods into the wilds of Kargamum and beyond, mapping the untamed lands. Magi from Al-Khem can be seen coming and going, pursuing their esoteric goals.

Those arriving in the harbor will pass by the Port Royale Maritime Academy which trains the sailors, shipwrights, and naval architects who brave the seas of Elyria. The shipyards of the Talqamar are dedicated to constant innovation, producing the blueprints of the next generation of ships for mass production in the County of Freeman’s Grove and the capital of Port Royale.

Beyond the waterfront and the campuses, the Talqamar provides all of the amenities and employment options of a major city in a setting intended to maintain the quiet, scholastic atmosphere that has attracted the wise and educated to the site for centuries. Housing and markets are designed to be efficient yet in keeping with the idyllic atmosphere.

OOC Details

The Talqamar is the center of learning and education in Port Royale, and a premier academic destination of the Kingdom of Alesia. Port Royale’s nobility are committed to working together to create the best possible experience for players new and old, and an education in the skills needed to make a living are a key part of that. With investment commitments from the Count of the Talqamar, the Duke of Port Royale, and most of the Port Royale nobility, the Talqamar is primed to serve the needs of all Alesians seeking to improve their skills.

While the Talqamar is primarily a university city, economic activity abounds as well. The research on navigation technology and naval architecture naturally feeds a shipbuilding industry. A booming market district feeds the insatiable demands of researchers and students alike. For graduates, recruiters are waiting to employ their skills throughout Port Royale. Paper and Ink makers will be vital, as will woodworkers for the shipbuilding industry, sailors, and fishermen. Smiths and glassblowers will have their products in high demand to feed the schools focused on Tinkering and Alchemy.

Recruitment Priorities

Employment opportunities abound for any and all interested residents. If your niche goals are not on the list below, you are still more than welcome both in the Talqamar and within the wider Port Royale Duchy Community where surely you can find a home. The below are specifically roles that the Talqamar city proper will have a need for:

  • Teachers. Teachers are needed for all of the schools we support. Patrons are already identified to ensure funding to pay salaries. If any of the schools appeal to you, please reach out.
  • Mayors. I expect 2-3 openings. Mayors interested in running towns focused on papermaking, inkmaking, logging/woodworking, shipbuilding, or farming/herding will surely find a good home here with plenty of demand for your raw materials. Mining and smithing will surely be needed, but it is hard to know in advance how likely such location specific resources will be to be found within the county borders.
  • Scribes. While most graduates of the Scriptorium are likely to find work in other parts of the duchy and kingdom, especially Starwood County and County Rusovich, the Scriptorium has need itself for Scribes interested in work within its Great Library.
  • Astronomers. The Observatory will always have the state of the art equipment for making observations of the stars. If you seek a career in astronomy, this is where you want to live.
  • Astrologers. In coordination with County Rusovich, Astrologers are highly sought after to observe the skies and record the futures they foretell.
  • Tinkerers and Inventors. The research efforts of the Institute of Ingenuity and Innovation are sure to push the technology of Elyria forward. If you want to be on the cutting edge, we have the teachers to teach you and the research grants to fund all of the mad science you can dream up.
  • Merchants. Raw materials and finished goods will need to be sold, and merchant stall space will be provided to ensure goods can find their way to paying customers.
  • Guards. Law and order are essential to the peaceful climate necessary for learning. Security is provided by the Blackguard of Port Royale, and all interested players are encouraged to join the duchy discord linked at the end of this post.
  • Shipwrights. Shipbuilding is likely to be a major industry, so plenty of demand for shipwrights and shipyard workers.
  • Paper and Ink Makers. All of the schools will have need for paper and ink, but the Scriptorium and the cartographers within the Observatory will surely have an insatiable appetite for both.
  • Traders. Other counties within Port Royale are already in discussions about supplying food and lumber to feed the students and industries of the Talqamar. Traders are needed to facilitate this commerce.
  • Tavern Keepers and Bards. What’s a harbor without some waterfront taverns and bars? Travelers will need a place to sleep and eat, so surely there will be good work for those seeking to run an inn.

The Scriptorium

Note: Work In Progress

Lore and Background

As the Third Age dawned and the seasonal camps at the Talqamar slowly transformed into a permanent settlement, a site near the main hill became a common meeting ground for philosophers. As time progressed, the debates held in this meadow began to attract audiences eager to learn from these wise Menn. Some of these spectators, our earliest Elyria historians with such esteemed names as (TBD), wrote of what they saw in records of which we have mere scraps today.
Industries and an economy sprung up in the nearby settlement to support these activities, and to make and sell copies of these prized words. These early scribes established the culture of learning and record keeping that eventually gave birth to the Talqamar as it is known today, and one of the core buildings at the heart of this center of learning is the building known now as the Scriptorium, a truly impressive structure the mere sight of which fills the visitor with a sense of timeless wisdom.

Research Focus Areas

The Scriptorium focuses on Scribing, with supporting teaching and research on aspects of Bardic and Deviant skills (reproduction/forgery and the detection of forgeries) and the paper and ink making trades.

The Institute for Ingenuity and Innovation

Note: Work In Progress

Lore and Background

Observing the stars with greater and greater accuracy requires considerable ingenuity and inventiveness. As demand for the services of expert toolmakers grew, it was only natural that a school to train the next generation of inventors would spring up and push the boundaries of the field. Now independent of the needs of the astronomers, the Inventors at the Institute constantly seek the Next Big Idea.

Research Focus Areas

The Institute focuses on Tinkering and the explosive side of Alchemy, with an eye towards unlocking new technologies in the game as opposed to iterating slowly on existing patterns.

The Port Royale Maritime Academy

Note: Work In Progress

Lore and Background

A coastal town with a research facility dedicated to advancing the arts of navigation, the Talqamar was the logical choice when the Duke of Port Royale was seeking a site for the training of professional sailors and shipwrights.

Research Focus Areas

  • Architecture Naval architecture, the design of new ships, uses the architecture tools. If it is its own skill, this section will be edited to match. For now, the important part is that the design of new ships, new rigging options, new sails, etc are all taught and studied at the Maritime Academy.
  • Navigation The navigation of a ship at sea is a difficult task, and teaching players that skill will surely be important. For those seeking to command ships at sea, getting their ship safely to port will be taught here.
  • Sailing If handling a ship is itself a skill, it will be taught here.

    Partner Counties

  • Freeman’s Grove

  • Port Royale
