Tribe Q&A Schedule

By Vye

Fair tidings, friends,

After posting Design Journal #20: A Tale of Twelve Tribes and revealing the write-ups on the first 3 tribes, it became apparent that there’s just too much information for a single Q&A! There will now be additional Tribe Q&A’s—4 in total—covering them in groups of 3-4 over the next several weeks. As we talk more about Tribes, how they interact with each other, and how they slot into CoE gameplay, we’ll be able to foster a deeper discussion about Tribes moving forward with the knowledge from previous Q&As and without having to barrel through all 12 in a single Q&A session.

Read Caspian's Design Journal on Tribes to learn about how they were developed. Specific details about each of the twelve tribes will initially show up as individual threads in the General Discussion forum. The list below will turn into links as each one is posted so that you can easily locate them.

The Q&As will take place on our Twitch.tv channel at the following times:

  • Part II: Monday, June 19th at 1PM PDT / 4PM EDT / 8PM GMT / 8PM UTC
  • Part III: Monday, July 10th at 1PM PDT / 4PM EDT / 8PM GMT / 8PM UTC
  • Part IV: Monday, July 24th at 1PM PDT / 4PM EDT / 8PM GMT / 8PM UTC

Question threads will be opened up for each of the Q&As, but questions will not be limited to the most recently-released tribes. Any previously-released tribe can be talked about. As mentioned above, the relationships between the tribes and other learnings discovered as we progress through each Q&A will allow us to get deeper and deeper into all the tribes with each session.

May life afford you the courage to choose the path on which you walk,

Vye

One more question.. About intelligence. Will our brain power grow like strength. If we become book worms? Further, will it be on an intelligence curve simmilar to strength for different tribes?

Hermes_Kriophoros - 1 month ago

What is the most knowledgeable tribe? My career within this game will be more focused on being a scholar. I want to be the best scholar I can, and need to know which tribe has the most intelligence, and is best equip for this. Please inform us on Tribe intelligence. We already know which tribe has strength, and which tribes may be best suited for deviance. I want brains!

"All living creatures in Elyria are rated along three axes of attributes: Physical (Strength, Agility, Stamina), Mental (Will, Reason, Focus), and Social (Persuasion, Intuition, Leadership). The values below represent the (Tribe's) predisposition toward certain attributes.

Note that the actual starting values of a character's attributes are based on their specific parents, but a character's bloodline also determines how easy or difficult it is to raise one attribute over another."

Neran: They are the most flexible of all the tribes, and the basis by which all other tribes are measured against.

Hrothi: Far more advanced mentally than most of the races and are equally balanced between their mental traits.

Brudvir: Learning from the other animals of the forest, the Brudvir have developed a constant vigilance and mental fortitude, being able to utilize their impressive will and focus to power through that which most people would cave to.

Kypiq: A clever Kypiq is a successful Kypiq. Relying on ingenuity and pluck in even the most mundane situation, they are viewed as impish rapscallions by those who can't see their genius. Not prone to long bouts of focused thinking, there is a tendency for Kypiq to want to get their hands dirty in order to better work through a problem.

Janoa: The Janoa run the middle of the road when it comes to mental aptitude. Not the best, but not the worst.

Dras: The ages have not been kind to the Dras, but it did not drain their resolve. Instead, it has pushed their will and focus to greater and greater heights.

To'resk: Willful, calculating, and logical, the To'resk are among the most mentally strong of the Tribes of Mann.

The Waerd: The Waerd are a willful and focused tribe, able to pick up new skills relatively quickly.

Will one of the discoverable tribes be ocean-based? A sailor needs her sea, ya know?

Which tribe would be the best if I wanted to become assassin?

The Waerd would certainly do well as assassins... perhaps Kypiq as well, for their stealth abilities.

That would be the Mydarri. :)

Imaj - 1 month ago

Concerning combat styles, will there be a form of grappling during combat?

ziggyspots - 1 month ago

Probably either Kypiq for the small and sneaky factor or Dras for the poison expertise.

Janoa would be great at the killing part, but they like to take trophies and display them, and as an assassin, you'd probably want to be more discreet.

I'm really not liking all of the hair and eye color limitations we're seeing with these tribes thus far, especially when there's already so many other obviously defining physical traits.

All tribes will be on all servers. Just 6 to 9 tribes on the starting continent. The other tribes would be on the undiscovered continents found post launch. At least that is what was said during the qa.

Where did this idea of 6-9 tribes come from? In the long version QnA Caspian said a minimum of 8 tribes with a likely range of 9-11 and Souzou joked about a 2 or 5 minimum.

I believe that the hair and eye colors are simply the most genetically dominant within each tribe and that wards will be able to choose those colors not normally found in their tribe.

Dekul - 2 months ago

Simple math, 6 kingdoms per server on the starting continent, and we are told there will be 1 or MAYBE 2 tribes per kingdom... if ANY of the kingdoms have only one tribe (Let alone multiple kingdoms as the wording would lead us to believe), then there can't possibly be all 12 tribes on the starting map...

ArtStealer12 - 2 months ago

So, there will be a limited number of races per server. From what I have read on other posts in the forums based on what was said in the last Q&A. Is there any merit to this or is there a reason we will not see all 12 races on each server considering the land masses are massive.

i like to be a blacksmith, so is thear gonna be any class that will be best at that or are all classes is the same for crafts?

Chronic - 1 month ago
@Valimai:

There are no classes.

AdinX - 2 months ago
@Valimai:

I'd recommend you to read through the Professions and Skills sections of the Gameplay tab: https://chroniclesofelyria.com/game/professions-skills But here's the nitty gritty in quote form: "At its most basic level Chronicles of Elyria is a fully customizable, skill-based Action RPG in which the absence of classes means you can create any character you can imagine."

Having a higher strength will help a Blacksmith swing a hammer. Dex might give you defter hands, allowing you to be more successful in crafting. An intelligent blacksmith might be able to craft beautiful blades that sing when exposed to enemy's blood.

There are 0 classes, what you should instead worry about is what tribe you end up in, since that will affect your racial stats, and those will be your starter RNG in all worldly things. If you start out as a tundra giant with tons of STR, you should be fine as a blacksmith, but being a bit more normal 'human' wouldn't be bad, since they tend to be the craftiest races in MMORPGs.

You said that a two handed swords can be a 1 handed swords for taler people. Can it also be a dwagger for the hugest? Does that also count for other weapons like bows, and for tools like a Hammer?

Chronic - 1 month ago
@kimsche:

It counts for all weapons that weapons will retain their size. If a Kypiq has a sword, yes it will likely be a dagger for a larger tribe.

Not sure how this would work for bows? If you can use it go for it, if not too bad.

There are tribes not races and the best from what i know till now is hrothi

Hexprone - 2 months ago
@CezarCez:

The Hrothi have an inbuilt advantage in stonecraft and have generally good mental stats -- but my hope is that there wouldn't be one of the twelve tribes that is just The Best at all technology.

Crafting and research are going to be a pretty big part of the game for every kingdom -- it would kind of suck if one Tribe had an all-round advantage.

My hope is that these advantages will have flavor rather than just being raw stat advantages. The Hrothi have massive stonework, the Kypiq elaborate treehouses, others might have towering brick structures or broad adobe complexes, etc.

Well think about this ... how would a hrothi fight a yoru ??? Isn't kind of off balance betwen them ? So if hrothi is more advanced tehnologicly then .. there is a bit of ballance

Hexprone - 2 months ago
@CezarCez:

Yeah, that kind of design is not appealing to me at all. It sounds like the past of MMOs, not the future --

Elves are the magic race. Dwarves are the tank race Halflings are the thief race

Boring and unimaginative. What I'd like is to see each tribe bring its own twist to both combat and crafting.

Couldn't find a definitive answer asking around discord so I'll post it here. Might re-post for next Q&A once we have a place for that.

We recently learned that not all tribes will be present on the starting continent due to geographical restrictions. Presumably the other tribes will exist in the world SOMEWHERE, just on continents undiscovered by the player-base. So lets say at some point you sail north to a new continent and meet, for example, the Yoru. A previously unplayable Tribe that nobody has any relations with. At what point, if any will that tribe be playable by the community on that server? Will all the families on that continent suddenly become available in character creation once they have been discovered? Will we have to breed their bloodline into playability through NPC marriage? Or will instead they function as a strictly NPC only Tribe due to how the server was generated. I have a feeling many players won't mind playing other tribes due to constraints of kingdoms etc, but having a some of them permanently locked on the servers might turn people away. And playing on a server with worse ping, just to allow for the fantasy of playing the tribe you want doesn't sound like the type of solution most would go for. Just my thoughts, again if no-one knows I'll definitely post of a condensed revised version of the question in the thread for the next Q&A, once we have a place for that.

Personally, I will take an educated guess and say that once discovered, any new player with no affiliation or ties or family issues can choose to play that newly discovered tribe. In terms of playing the leadership of that new tribe, however, I believe marriage or CB of some kind will be important to players being able to spark into influential characters from that particular tribe.

Pretty sure all the worlds will have all the characters. The starting continents are just that "starting" continents. The sample map that SBS has used to show us an example of how a map MIGHT look post launch is also used to show us how kingdoms might be spread over biomes for us to choose at domain selection:

We can expect to see kingdoms that roughly align to the biomes in this example map, 2 or 3 tribes per kingdom is feasible.

Looking at this map I would see no reason to not have all tribes present and playable on launch. Scale may affect it but to cross all continents by land looks possible with the biggest sea crossing in the center of the map. Ocean travel may be needed for other areas to reach different locations in a more direct manner.

Everyone will have to choose between tribe of choice or Kingdom of choice, which only makes the May village token promotion as a cash grab.

Will we be able to choose any race we want after we choose where we live or are both heavily connected. My concern is, say I pledge my loyalty to BloodOak Duchy from Dleatherus, in the Kingdom of Bordweall, but I choose a tribe that lives in swamps, and there is no swamps in his Duchy, am I screwed ?

Like what if I was a Duke myself, would this limit where my Duchy ir kingdom is, or would it limit what tribe I can play ? How does it all correlate.

My concern is, say I pledge my loyalty to BloodOak Duchy from Dleatherus, in the Kingdom of Bordweall, but I choose a tribe that lives in swamps, and there is no swamps in his Duchy, am I screwed ?

This question has been answered dozens of times before, but I will repeat it for you.

No. You will not be able to choose just any race you want to no matter where you choose to be located.

Yes. Where you choose to live and what tribes are available for you to play is related.

Why is this so?

Because when you choose a "character" you are not simply making a fresh brand new one in a character creation screen and plopping themwhere ever you feel like in the world. You are picking a character that already exists in that world. That lives there. Has a family. A job. Connections with other people. So unless there happens to be a Dras family living amongst the tribes/biomes your kingdom encompasses when you go into the game to pick your character (which there will not be at the start of CoE, as the tribes will all be in their starting positions of their native biomes) then there would not be any Dras available for you to choose from if you choose to settle where they are not.

Makes sense?

Now if your chosen kingdom that you have pledged to doesn't have the biome and thus tribe you truly desire you have two choices.

1 - Break your pledge of loyalty to your present kingdom and switch to a kingdom that does have the biome/tribe you desire.

Or.

2 - Simply choose to start a character in that other kingdom with the plan to relocate to the kingdom you have pledged to once you have the means necessary. Which, if you watched this morning's Q&A, is supposedly is likely to be arduous and challenging.

Like what if I was a Duke myself, would this limit where my Duchy ir kingdom is, or would it limit what tribe I can play ? How does it all correlate.

If you are titled then that is another matter. Because yes where you choose to place your domain and settlement does limit you in what tribe you can play . As mentioned earlier when you choose your character you will be choosing one that is already living in the world. And in the case of titles, the character you choose is limited to the families living in your chosen settlement. If you don't choose a settlement with a Dras family, then there is no Dras characters for you to choose from.

Makes sense, doesn't it?

However.

There is nothing stopping you once the game is underway from breeding Dras bloodlines into your own bloodline (unless of course the Dras are one of the few tribes not available on the starting continent of your server. In which case it doesn't matter anyway). If you really really really want to stick with your Kingdom but also to play a Dras, then be patient and work in-game to have your family slowly turn Dras over generations by targeting Dras players or NPCs for child or even marriage contracts with your starting non Dras character.

A note on Wards; choosing Wards still limits you to the tribes that are in the vicinity of the orphanage that you choose to spawn from. Which means you are still limited to the tribe types of the local area.

I hope this clarified things for you a bit as well as given you a greater understanding of WHY it is the way it is.
