The Festival of Renewal Returns!

By Serpentius

Greetings Elyrians,

The Pilgrimage of Renewal....a rich time of stories and legends in Elyria's history.

One such story was revealed earlier today with a new lore story explaining the history of the Flower Festival and how it is tied to this time of prosperity. Alongside that we have added new Promotional items to our online store for the Festival of Renewal. You will also notice that some items have been brought back from the vault!

All of these items are only available for a limited time so don't miss out!

Promo Items

The following promo items will be eligible for purchase starting today, March 22nd through Thursday, April 4th at 12pm PDT.

Update 4/16/2019: In order to be sure everyone has had a chance to take advantage of these promo items while Title Transfers and Package Claiming is operational, we've extended this promo until April 22nd, 2019, at 12pm PDT.

After the promo period ends, all of these items will return to the vault.

New Items

Pilgrimage Survival Kit

Whether it's surviving the night or speaking with the locals, this kit has you covered.

Once a generation and twice in a lifetime, many Elyrians undertake a rite of passage called the Pilgrimage of Renewal. The Pilgrimage Preparation Kit includes items meant to increase the likelihood of a successful pilgrimage, include some basic survival supplies and books containing critically useful knowledge for the trek.

Purchasing this item will allow you to redeem the following items from a vendor in-game:

  • "Recipes for Purification" - a book for making pure ritual foods for the Pilgrimage of Renewal. Contains recipes for Bough Cake (Nut and honey cake), Caudle (a slightly alcoholic drink made from pure ingredients), and Nucato (honey glazed spiced walnut treats)
  • "Simple Phrases for Pilgrims" - A book that would allow someone to learn basic levels of Neran, Croçais, and Pyqsi. Not enough to gain fluency, but enough to get by on your journey across Elyria
  • Pilgrim's Pack - a wax treated linen backpack for carrying your supplies during the pilgrimage. Water resistant and light, the pilgrim's pack may not carry very heavy gear, but will adequately cover the needs of a pilgrim on any journey
  • Simple Quilted Bedroll - a linen and cotton bedroll, quilted for warmth and cotton filled. Not water resistant, but light and easy to carry
  • Firestarter - a brass tube containing cotton damping and noxious flammable oils capped by a cork with a small rod pushed through it. When the rod is exposed to air in the presence of the tube's oils, the vapors of the oil ignite into a weak flame

Hello, can Falcons deliver messages?

Ah, no, sorry. Falcons aren't that sort of bird - they're hunting raptors, mostly used to hunt other birds, small animals like rabbits or foxes, and other things in that similar size range. In theory you could train them to fetch something it could grab that's in your line of sight for you and return it to your hand, though.

Hope that helps! :)

JackofShadows - 3 months ago

Ok, that leaves option 1, or another persons guess ;p

JackofShadows - 3 months ago

@Medussa Possible reasons: 1) Fruit trees are uncommon items, so more expensive, (and it has been stated that some things available in the store will not be available later to buy with eps.) 2) The EP kit and Projection list was created some time ago. It was to give people a general idea of what could be bought and relative costs. It may not be 100% accurate.

Actually JackofShadows Caspian reconfirmed again over the weekend that the EP store lists have in fact remained the constant which they use to price their promotional items. It is in fact still accurate :D

In the EP Kits and Items Projection List a la carte, it describes crops as going for less than 100 EP for a field. 100 EP = $10. In the current store promo, Why are Orchard kits are going for $10 for a seed amount equaling 1/2 a field (4 plots)?

Long story short: We picked the number of seeds that we felt would yield the optimal configuration and still preserve the value of the trees in question, in terms of rarity in the world.

Shop talk answer: When we decided the contents of the orchard packs we had to keep in mind a few things: The size of root networks laid by these trees, their need for water, particular soil properties, etc. This works out to answers for how far part they need to be spaced, what sort of biodiversity is preferable, how the trees will impact water levels in soil, etc. We used that answer, and tried different configurations with our farming mechanics to calculate potential yield with each configuration. We then took that that answer and factored in the quality/value and desired rarity of the produce in comparison to the quality and yields of staple crops like corn and wheat, to decide exactly how many trees we considered "best" for a farm field.

At the same time, we calculated the shortest possible distance for spacing that was viable, however sub-optimal, if you pushed everything to their limits. That gives us a number that is "how many can fill a farm plot" - that number is actually close enough to the optimal answer for how many fit in a field under ideal conditions that something close to this number would fulfill both conditions

That said we didn't want to give you the number of seeds that could fill a farm plot and say "that's how many fill a field, period" because it was important to us that there was enough room in what you knew to experiment so that farmers could decide for themselves how best to plant and potentially tailor their fields to their needs or experiment to find their own sort of "Style." So we altered the target number a little and explained that it's how many fill a farm plot, leaving room for said experimentation.

The result is that it's sort of up to you how you manage it. You can more sparsely plant what you have to fill more than a plot, yielding higher quality fruit, but less volume, or plant at max density, using multiple kits to fill a field, and yielding substantial volume at the expense of more potential soil maintenance and lower quality fruit. (And as a benefit, we can "maintain" the rarity value of fruit by using yield quality as our arbiter)

So, in essence: Planting for quality means spreading your kits out more. Planting for yield means using every seed in the pack on a single plot. Your actual arrangement is entirely up to you.

Hope that helps! :)

It's likely a quality/rarity thing Medussa. The EP store price list is for common quality items, and when I think common crops I think onions, potatoes, cabbages (obviously variances for biomes) not orchards or fruits which are traditionally a bit more expensive and rare than your common turnips and carrots.

I haven't specifically seen this asked and answered by a dev yet, but that would be my guess.

This will no doubt be a stupid question but, the trading post. It says "you will be given all the matts to build etc". Yet I'm sure I read somewhere, that everything bought through promotions, was just magically built. Like EP buildings. Yet not sure one way or another. Don't wanna buy it here, to find out later on I was wrong. Anyone got a link/quote to such info?

I have an answer for you. Things bought in promotions still need to be redeemed and built. What you get is a voucher making it cost you nothing when you go to the appropriate vendor.

The things that are instantly built are only things purchased with EP and placed during Exposition. So whether you redeem the trading post during expo or after, it will need to be built manually by someone (free of charge for you though)

Cheers for the answer Labbe. Just have to wait for the EP store in that case.

If I live in biome A but wanted to also try growing trees from biome B,C,D is a biome A vendor likely to be able to fill a request for biome B,C,D seeds or would I need to get the seeds from a biome B,C,D and bring them back to biome A for growing?

Hieronymus - 3 months ago

I don't know who that comment was directed at, but I just want to point out that it comes across as a really snarky jab at someone for simply asking or answering a question, and it's comments like it that discourage new players from participating in these forums. I wouldn't ordinarily concern myself with it except that quite a few people have complained about a pervasive unwelcoming attitude in this community in the past, and so it's antithetical to the function of an ambassador to promote such an environment.

That aside, it's great to see those orchard kits in this promo and the resource diversity it suggests will exist in the game. That addresses a concern that I and others have had about some of the biomes in Elyria, absent any information about them.

If you are referring to the Tale of Two Hamlets, and the Legendary Inn's then it is because they haven't appeared in the shop yet.

The Tale of Two Hamlets pack is going to require title transferring before it can be implemented since Mayor Title Packs don't exist yet, so expect that sometime this week.

The Legendary Inn will drop at a random time "during the daylight hours for your server, during this promotion"

Anyone have more information on sister settlements? Like, what are the benefits, if any? How close do they need to be to get said benefits? Can they be in 2 different bioms with 2 different races? if they need to be within 1000m of each other (500m of stone rd each) it seems a little silly. After all, wouldn't the closest communities most easily "share culture and trade" by default? It would be nice if it could be like "Sister Cities" in the states, where the partner city is much further away, and there is a real cultural exchange.

It seems mostly unknown at this point. Similar questions were asked on discord last night, and mostly the answer was some form of "wait until next week when we publish more details".

Yes, animals in the game are breedable. How difficult it will be to raise falcons in captivity is unknown at this point, but I would assume that someone with appropriate skills will be able to do that. Otherwise new falcons will have to captured from the wild. My guess is that rare breeds of animals and birds will be difficult to raise, and common ones will be straight forward for someone with the skills and necessary resources.

Love, love, love these promos, just one question though.

Can we assume that the Trading Post Kit at $50 will give us more value than buying 600EP at $50 during expo? Basically... if you were to make a similar Trading Post yourself during Expo with EP, would it cost at least 600EP or more? Thanks! :)

Draguta - 3 months ago
@AndyDrago:

If you check out the EP Kits and Item Projection (which can be found in a Google search), and you price match between the EP a la carte list and the "item contains" description in the store, it's approximately even - if you allow for the building materials to equal $15.

When are we going to get a book for falconry training in the store? I am enjoying all of the birds for falconry but I'm concerned about whether or not I'll be able to train them properly.

Is there any information out there regarding a falcon's lifespan? Should I use reality as my point of reference, or will it be buffed to be around a horses lifespan?

This was answered in discord (posted by Serp as a quote from Snipehunter):

"They'll live 25-30 years, or 6-9 months in Elyria."

Falcons!!!!

Very nice selection of items. Thanks!

Very nice items. The orchard kits are good even for those who do not intend to farm intensively. I know a lot of people have been asking about falconry, so it's good to see that kit. A trading post seems like a dynamite way to bootstrap a single steading or hamlet into a larger settlement.

I love it I bought 4 x Tropical Orchard Kit. My Duchy Capital Citizen will find those trees everywhere … yay free food …..

Hey 2 questions,

  1. As a logistics guild is it worthwhile to pick up the trade post or is 3k still the best bang for the buck?

  2. Is there any mechanical value to the sister city monument?

Since caspian answered me on the Discord I figured Id pass it on to the forums in case anyone else has the same questions.

  1. 3k EP is more cost effective to do the same thing when it comes to bang for the buck.

  2. Yes, there are mechanical effects from the sister city pack. They are currently still hammering them out but in general they will be to encourage the two cities working together in trade etc.

Regarding the Orchard kits:

From Caspian:

"K1 and K2 are Mild
K3 is Temperate
K4 is Arid
K5 and K6 is Tropical

OCE:

K1: Mild
K2: Temperate/Arid
K3: Arid/Temperate/Tropical
K4: Tropical

K2 Shrublands is Temperate/Arid hybrid
K3 Semi-Arid Desert: Arid
K3 Bog: Temperate
K3 Grasslands: Temperate
K3 Marsh: Temperate/Tropical

However, it's biome specific. So there are some biomes in the kingdoms that don't follow those guidelines precisely."

Regarding the Orchard Kits planting a "farm plot". Is this the same size as a parcel? If not, can we please get an idea of what percentage of a parcel a farm plot is? Thanks!

From Snipehunter:

"You can divide a parcel into a 4 x 4 grid of farm plots, holding a total of 16 plots."

Can I get some clarification from the Devs regarding farm sizes? Particularly the difference between a farm plot and a farm field. Because the following appears to be mildly contradictory:

And:

From Snipehunter on Discord:

>Snipehunter 🌩11/29/2018 >Re: Farming: A 64x64m parcel of land can hold two fields, each capable of growing 20 or so rows of a crop like corn. So if we assume, for example, that a person is going to eat 3 ears of corn a day (the poor bastard) and there are 20 rows of 100 corn stalks each, that one farm field harvest could feed a single person for more than 600 days per harvest.

>Of course, there are lots of problem with that plan: You need more diversity both in your diet and for the health of your soil, generally you have more than one person to support, etc. But that should give you an idea of what you can do with a parcel in terms of farming.

And from a conversation between myself and Caspian on Discord today:

>Draguta Miere PisicaToday at 11:57 AM >Hey Caspian, I noticed in the EP item projection list, there is the wording of a "crop field". What is the size difference between a field and a farm plot?

>Caspian ☁Today at 11:59 AM >@Draguta Miere Pisica No difference. Just wording.

On top of this information, based on the large given size difference between a farm plot (1/16 parcel) and a farm field (1/2 parcel), are there any there other parcel-portion farm sizes to be aware of?

Wow, this made me reconsider all my plans for my (first) character!

Olan_Ravenheart - 3 months ago

Also could the Temperate Orchard Kit and Mild Orchard Kit both grow reasonably well in the Lower Montaine biome?

Draguta - 3 months ago

I really love this! Thanks for doing the promo!

Olan_Ravenheart - 3 months ago

Very Nice, but was it intended to have pear tree listed 2 times Temperate Orchard Kit: 1 x packet containing enough Apple tree seeds to fill a farm plot 1 x packet containing enough Pear tree seeds to fill a farm plot 1 x packet containing enough Pear tree seeds to fill a farm plot 1 x packet containing enough starter Red Grape vine seeds to fill a farm plot?
