The Game Garden Grows

By Vye

Hail and well met, Elyrians!

Welcome to another blog update about Chronicles of Elyria! The spring thaw has begun and it brings beautiful blooms. Also hayfever...but mostly beautiful blossoms of goodness, like the ones below. Read on!

Production Update

Lighting the World

Almost anyone in the games or film space would tell you that lighting is one of the single most important visual elements. Not only does it set the mood and ambiance, but it can be the difference between the end product looking professional versus amateurish. Consider lighting between a daytime soap opera and a primetime television show. A lot of the perceived quality is a result of the lighting.

Chronicles of Elyria is no different, and we aim to look like what one would come to expect from a AAA game. To that end, we're concepting our lighting targets in different times of day and in different biomes. Since development of the New Haven area is key to developing the Prologue, we've started creating targets for that area first. It's not just about the ambient light though, but also what the sky will look like. Elyria is not Earth, so we get to make it far prettier than Earth if we want to!

Don't worry, there will be enough stars for you Astronomer Tier backers to make the constellation of your dreams

Furring the Animals

The unique creatures of Elyria were not featured in the Silver Run Mines, so it's been nice to get back to them. In the last couple weeks we've been making improvements to the hair on the Dryas Elk, getting the fur on the Trison, and improving the animations on the quadriped rig in general.
Getting in the path of a charging Trison is not recommended

Weathering the Grass

Weather was also not a primary feature inside the mines, so we are making improvements there as well. Previously the grass had not been affected by the snow, which you can see in the first snow demo video. We're still hashing out some of the finer points to get it looking just right but it's already a marked improvement.
Clip has been sped up for your convenience

Website Improvements

Version 3 of the website is a highly-anticipated and crucial phase of our development because it is not just about a more attractive, more modern re-imagining of our existing content. No, V3 encompasses a great deal of backend work that will hook into our community-created content and pre-alpha experiences. It is also a prerequisite of Account Merging, Package Gifting, Surname Reservation, Family Crest Creation, and Settlement & Domain Selection.

As mentioned in my last update, the playable demo at PAX East was a subset of the Prologue and, therefore, a single-player experience. Many of you know that we are developing a game of the Massively-Multiplayer and Online varieties, and V3 is one of the steps leading to that.

Updates to the website with incremental improvements, new features, and - ultimately - the 3rd Version, will be coming on a regular basis for a while. We pushed out a release on March 27th that included:

Borders, Tiers, and You

Forum Borders and Tiers are based on Total Influence, and can thus be upgraded either through purchases in the store, or anything else that awards Influence. There are now 12 Tiers broken down as follows:

These correspond with the Adventurer Pledge Packages and have a bronze border

These correspond with the Gentry Pledge Packages and have a silver border

These correspond with the Aristocracy Pledge Packages and have a silver border with additional filigree

These correspond with the Nobility Pledge Packages and have a silver border with gold trim and filigree

This means that, generally speaking, you can identify whether someone has pledged in the commoner, gentry, aristocracy, or nobility tiers simply by looking at their borders. But, be advised, not everyone's in-game character title matches their border, so, don't make assumptions.

PMs and RSS feeds and More, Oh My!

Some additional low-hanging fruit made it out with some bug fixes we released also.

  • Better landing page on first visit - you can experience it again here or when your cookies expire
  • PM button under a poster's name in a forum thread, so you can message them privately and tell them how much you appreciate their enthusiasm!
  • RSS feed support here
  • Guild Recruitment forum filtered from recent posts so you can find the rest of the threads a little easier until V3 forums are up

Express Yourself

We've got a release in the pipeline that is currently undergoing final testing, and it is set to include the following, seriously-awesome features. I'm excited about this. It seems like a short list but, wow, it packs a punch!

  • Free, One-Time, Username Change!
  • Update Your Own E-mail Address!
  • Set Your Own Avatar Picture!
  • Preview Your Signatures Without Needing To Post!
  • Preview Your Posts Before Posting!
  • Staff and Moderator Posts Are Visually Distinct!
  • Posts Can Be Reported!

Once that release goes live, we'll make an announcement here on the site. I just couldn't keep it to myself any longer, so get pumped!

Q&A Videos

Survival Q&A in Full

Last week we did a Live Q&A on Survival - one of the unique feature areas of Chronicles of Elyria. It's still available to watch on our Twitch.tv channel for a couple more weeks, along with all the banter that was going on in chat. It has also been copied over to our YouTube channel where it will be available to watch indefinitely.

We started on time, had no problems with audio that I know of, and actually kept it to about an hour! Our A/V game is improving!

Survival Q&A in Brief

Because we were so on-point in the Full Q&A, the Brief Q&A video that is now available to watch and share, is still 20 minutes. There's just that much information in the video, even when you cut out apple juice shenannigans and laughing fits about protecting one's backside!

The Name Game

Tribes. What can I say? They have been in the works for a while but we haven't been ready to announce them. While we are still working on the concept drawings that depict each Tribe in detail, we're ready to share the names. Naming can be difficult, and a lot of good ideas are already copyrighted or are featured prominently in other fantasy universes...

Let's name the freshwater wetlands tribe the Gorn! Nailed it!

via GIPHY

We've done the appropriate amount of research now and I'm happy to announce the names of the Tribes of Mann.

  • TUNDRA Yoru - /ˈjɔːr.uː/ (YORE-oo)
  • GRASSLANDS Neran - /ˈnɛɹ.ən/ (NAIR-un)
  • SAVANNAH Owem - /ˈoʊ.ɪm/ (OH-im)
  • ARID DESERT Erishé - /ˌɛeɹ.ɪˈʃeɪː/ (air-ih-SHAY)
  • BROADLEAF FOREST Kypiq - /ˈkɪp.ɪk/ (KIP-ick)
  • ALPINE FOREST Brudvir - /ˈbɾu̜ːd.vɪeɹ/ (BROOD-veer)
  • MOUNTAIN STEPPE Hrothi - /ˈrʰoː.θi/ (HROH-thee)
  • TROPICAL RAINFOREST Janoa - /d͡ʒaˈnoʊ.ə/ (JAH-no-uh)
  • SEMI-ARID DESERT The Waerd - /ðə ˈwɛɹd/ (the WARED)
  • FRESHWATER WETLANDS To'resk - /tɔɹˈɛsk/ (tor-ESK)
  • SALTWATER MANGROVES Mydarri - /mɪˈdɑːr.iː/ (mih-DAR-ee)
  • SWAMPLANDS Dras - /ˈdɹɔs/ (DROSS)

Here I am, literally announcing the names. And pronouncing them... Prannouncing? Can that be a word now?

The concept drawings for the Tribes are coming before Settlement & Domain Selection, since we can all agree it'd be nice to know what Tribe you'd be playing when you pick your lands. When they are ready, we will share those concepts. For now, I will share with you this line-up. It shows average sizes and proportions for males and females.

Some of this is subject to change. A couple of the Tribe names may be altered and we may make a couple adjustments to the tribe proportions as well.

That's it for this update. Look for the additional announcements about those website features to be released soon!

Lets not all forget in Game of Thrones a group of 7 kids were able to gang stab Pycelle to death. Granted, he was an old man.

Would love to know more about the actual biomes, and the pros and cons to each, as well as the traits of each of the tribes. Leaning towards Brudvir but need more info before deciding fore sure.

Looking forward to future updates!!

Savannah/Tree Savannah looks like Elves Mountain Steppe looks like Dwarfs Broadleafs/Redwood Forest looks like Halflings

Tundra is way to big. for a cold area smaller bodys are more common look at the Eskimo. Tundra should be just like Boreal/Alpine Forest. Such a big form is more likly for Shrubland, were you have be big to see over the bush.

Frea - 2 months ago
@Taloon:

A Tundra is defined as a region where it is too cold for trees to grow. The Eskimo only live in one type of tundra (the arctic Tundra) but there are also large parts of Scandinavia, Northern Europe, Western Siberia and European Russia which are classified as tundra. I think the Tundra people look to be styled more from those regions; although I agree that they would not be best suited to an arctic tundra.

Hey if they have force powers instead of natural physical strength I am all for it. As long as there is an explainable reason. If I stepped on an ant one day, and suddenly it overpowered me and threw me over the fence I would like to know what the heck just happened, he is a criminal to the law of physics burn him at the stake. Also Yoda agree he would that if you are gaining not physical strength but magical strength the way you would do so would also be different.

I will assume and hope that the strengths of species are fair, but not equitable.

whats the minimum pledge purchase to get playing immediately?

If this is a serious question : there is no pledge to get playing immediately , unfortunately the game is still in the development stages and isn't ready for public release ... those who backed astronomer or more tier (I think) should be able to select lands and partake in exposition hopefully this summer - so basically if all goes well summer is the earlieSt you can "play" and I'm not sure about how much of the game you will be able to experience then ...

Can't wait to play the game though , whatever it may be like , I'm excited for it !!

I have no problem with a pixie that trained several gameyears just with the only aim to get stronger being stronger than a giant thats ill, old and never trained strength. However, I totally agree, there should be a very big difference in average racial strength in these two cases. Pixies are roughly half as big as giants, so weigh roughly 1/8, so their average strength should only be a fraction of giants, too, as their body does not need high strength for usual activities.

I'm surprised people are so concerned by the melee reach of a Yoru, and not the implications of an Owem with a bow...

Will there be technology to catch moving targets, ie nets, ropes etc?

Otherwise, would a fight with an owem archer squad or "skirmishers" just be a matter of time?

and of cause, it will be much easier for the pixies to craft fluffy little wings and learn how to fly and then throw magic mushroom dust down at the enemies which makes them sleep with nice dreams, while they are being carried home in their beds and when they wake up, they think they just dreamt that invasion in the pixie-wood. ;)

Now... while thinking of those possibilities... I might tend to pixie-land instead of being the hole-digging-dwarf i usually tend to be :P

So many possibilities...

Concerning the 'huge-baby' topic: You can just give birth earlier when your baby gets too big for you. Thats what happens irl, too, usually. Not the best for the baby, but thats just the only way. And as there is no pregnancy anyway in CoE... no problem anyway.

Regarding the stars - they seem to disappear entirely in daylight. What conditions cause them to disappear? Is it going to vary by, e.g. climate, altitude or proximity to Elyrian light sources (i.e. settlements)? Will bright stars be visible at dawn or dusk?

I don't know about CoE, but the reason stars seem to disappear during the day in our world is precisely because their light is drowned out by the daylight - the light given off of our Sun. I wouldn't be surprised if SBS simply used the same mechanic.

Apologies for a late reply. It's not the only reason. On Earth an observatory on the top of a desert mountain would have a better view than from the ground in the wetlands. There are game reasons they might not want to do that, though. If astronomy is important it would give an advantage to certain geographies. There are advantages to just having fewer clouds in the desert, let alone visibility.

Would have to be an advantage that wasn't story-critical ie balanced with other tribes advantages. The Yoru for example may thrive in their own biome but elsewhere might be too hot. They may be strong, but faster races could easily attack from range. It's potentially going to be easier to overcome some races advantages than others.

I know that you guys more than likely would not put this thought in game however here we go:

If a smaller race tried to have children with the largest wouldn't realistically that give heightened chances for death during childbirth? (yes even though you could just run back to your body) it just seems kind of odd to assume the whole "Oh look your tiny body just popped out a HUGE baby and you're fine, congrats!" thing.

Chronicles_of_P2W - 2 months ago

I would guess Kypiq will have disadvantage in melee combat, but will be harder to notice while sneaking (remember, no name tags), also will require less food and water, and will be harder to hit (smaller hit box). Perhaps they will also travel a bit faster on mount (mount carrying less weight).

On the other hand, carry weight will be lower as well, reach (as said) will be shorter and melee attacks weaker.

I see Kypiq as sneaky race favoring ranged weapons, and with advantages as travelers, requiring less consumables and being able to use more places as shelters (smaller body size, they fit in more spaces).

I think this is the case, but if cartographers call it the "land of pixies" and distribute enough maps, all while a lot of people refer to them as pixies, then even NPCs might call them pixies in normal conversation. As long as they don't then create more maps or something to compete, I think they'll be called pixies.

Which leads to map burning, possibly conflict, and good story.

Nice.

I hope there will be ways to being derogatory, if we are to create a vibrant story, playing softly softly will not really fit, I want to be able to (in-game) use derogatory terms about other races and it fit the narrative, it would work both ways I imagine the smaller (heightwise) tribes would have similar derogatory words for the taller tribes.

Question re breeding: If you have a child contract, can you breed with another race? If so, will the child take YOUR race, or the race of your partner?

The reason I ask is that aside from consequences of racial reactions, the latter would actively allow players to choose the race of their offspring, milking that beautiful world variation.

I'D be all in for the larger tribes to require more metal when crafting armors for them than the shorter tribes. cause well it's just how it would be IRL covering a 7ft person in plate armor requires more metal than covering a 5ft person in plate armor, I wonder if that would be a thing.

"...we may make a couple adjustments to the tribe proportions as well."

Adjust them PLEASE! For what i've read in the comentaries i'm minority here, but i think that these proportions don't contribute to make the game low fantasy... or i got the wrong idea and i'm thinking that low fantasy is "almost no fantasy" : ]

Considering that the numbers are the average size of each tribe i would sugest tropical wetlands+ mountain stepp ++ broadleaf/redwod +++ tropical forest - swamp -- tundra ---

The snow in grass looks good, also the animals textures and furr. But the animation demonstration could've been made in any place where you take the screenshot, would've been pretier than in a grey box : /

Anyway, keep the good work and keep open with the comunity as you've been. : ]

@Eurickdm:

Actually, even on Earth people can vary from small (like oriental islanders) to quite large (like Nordic). The Span of average height from 4-7 feet is pretty good imo.

Also, I can see mountain people being shorter and somewhat bulkier on average. The reason being that the lower oxygen levels tend to require the distance from the heart to the brain be shorter and the lungs & heart be larger.

All things considered though. For ultra-low fantasy; the largest peoples would likely have the most meat & fat available in their diet and in large amounts. The smallest would have little food available in their zone, such as people who live on small islands where every creature tends to dwarf. The highest altitude peoples on Earth are not actually super stocky, although they are only an average of 4-5 feet tall. Their lungs are approximately 25% larger, but they don't carry much weight on their bodies otherwise. Many of the Nordic people actually lived below sea level, where oxygen was slightly higher. Also, if you look at the fossil records you would find that the largest creatures on Earth existed when the oxygen levels were at their highest.

... sorry, that turned into a rambling mess really quickly. My mind thinks in circles you see.

Well, there are people from different servers who will use their pledge to add new combat styles. Perhaps one of them could be using katanas.

I'm happy to see more info about tribes! I guess we are going to see many movements inside the communities - because there are people who want to play one tribes or another. For me is too soon and all of them are really great! We will see in the future how they look like and its characteristics.

i believe if they are to add an asian tribe it will likely be on the second continent, as their culture, buildings, clothing, weapons would take a decent amount of development time. being that it is not a core aspect of the game and is mostly aesthetic this will likely push it back to after launch, as the tribes would be quite different on the second continent. so for the sake of development it would likely be pushed back.

The little (and large!) people may find the following clips relevant to combat :)

Not that you can hop on someone's back and strangle them into unconsciousness or anything, or throw stop them from hitting you by holding their head...

Regarding the tribes themselves -- size is not the only (dis)advantage! Chronicles of Elyria is a game of complex systems; we wouldn't stop at size. <3

As mentioned just previously, the Yoru are a tundra tribe. Stick them in the desert and they're likely to overheat. Likewise, throw the Erishé into the frozen arctic and they're gonna have a hard time. Large people sacrifice some sneakiness for size and strength, but that's not to say they can't play a rogue-like character if they wanted to! Elephants have been largely successful at remaining unnoticed in many rooms, after all.

Oracle - 2 months ago

Re Tribes, awesome. Some are massive, some are tiny. Some are stronger. Others are faster. Many can thrive in specialised biomes. In their homelands, each offer certain advantages.

It's very well people having concerns about ice giants, but outside the frozen tundra they are sure to overheat. Deep in the forests, smaller tribes may hide around trees and pick them off. If your ambition is to explore the world, such a biome specialist might not be ideal. However, I pity the fool who decides to take on the giants on their own turf, and the extremes of climate at the same time.

Oracle - 2 months ago

It's looking awesome. Amazing work all of you :)

The trison movement is leagues better than it used to be. The visuals are jaw dropping.

One tiny mention skimming through. Check "Furring the Animals" for a unique spelling of unique lol.

I'm hoping the work done tweaking the start zone is pretty quick to apply to other biomes too. Can't wait for release.

Ideally, pre selection, 2 screenies of each biome, one in the sunset/night and one in the day with a native tribe would make people's decisions easier, or a concept art of a tribe member :D

With current quality standards, can't wait :D

Ps. Dwarves confirmed in steppes lol.

I wonder will settlements have citizens from several tribes or not in the beginning when we pick our characters? In the later stages tribes most likely start to mix more?

Will there be hostilities etc (I want to kill/I don't like you because you are from tribe X) between different tribes or are they neutral to each other?

No word about revealing tribe names in social media?? I'm a bit concerned about your effort on social media... latest update to facebook seems to be a month old. Not much activity on twitter either. It wouldn't hurt to bang the jungle drums a more.

Some settlements may be more of a melting pot than others, especially in transitional zones between the primary biomes. As an example, the New Haven area we've been developing for the Prologue is a Lower Montane Temperate Forest, which is a transitional area between an Alpine Forest and Broadleaf Forest and Grassland Steppe. Because of that, Neran, Brudvir, Hrothi, and even Kypiq would be pretty comfortable in that region.

Depending on which area you start in, there may be more or fewer Tribe choices for your character creation because of this.

A lot of the racial relations (both good and bad) will come from the players and how they interact, but we are planning on providing historic events that will set the stage for tolerance or intolerance for the players. In general though, conflict = drama, so...

And you're right, we're rubbish at social media. We're working on a plan! :)

These are the borders mentioned on the Kickstarter. The IP values required to reach each one are based on the pledge packages they were associated with; in other words, the border you have is the one that goes with your pledge level, or a higher one if you also have enough EP or other purchases to make up the difference between your tier and the next one.

Part of me sees your point, Aeyt. Another part of me wonders why this is an issue. It's a bunch of pixels on a forum arranged in a certain way. That said, if someone spent $500 on a KS Count pledge but now the forums show them as mere aristocracy, I can see how one may feel they didn't get what they were promised. Hopefully one of the staff has a good answer for you and doesn't ignore this matter.

I am sure by mentioning that the shorter folks will have to rely on their agility and wits would mean that there would be some balancing between the tribes. I am speculating, but the Kypiq will probably be the more sneaky types using daggers/ranged weapons, whereas the Yoru will probably be the ones wielding 2-handed weapons and charging straight into fights.

I would guess that the sprite hitboxes will be different sizes too. Which means its a lot harder to hit a small person with a ranged weapon and its easier to miss them with a melee weapon too. If being twice the size means having a hitbox twice the size it will come with big disadvantages too. That's something only the devs can answer though as I'm just guessing

Exactly! This is why I am in love with CoE. Forget cookie cutter characters like in World of Warcraft where all you need to do is look for best in slot etc etc...different tribes of mann will have different attributes and you can really shape your character to be just how you want it to be. Sure a character with a shorter stature will have problems with reach...however you will most likely be faster, more agile, be able to use less energy in parrying attacks...etc...etc....this will scare a lot of people...what CoE is doing is plain beautiful and I am embracing every second of it. This is exactly how you make a truly unique and special character experience, no 2 players will be the same.

Wait, if the sizes are as significantly different as those shown here, won't fighters from the larger/longer limbed tribes have a MASSIVE advantage over the shorter/shorter limbed tribes just due to their increased reach?

In melee combat, the reach will definitely have an impact on overall combat tactics. If you were planning to stand there trading hits, then the shorter tribes are absolutely at a disadvantage.

The shorter folks will have to rely on their agility and wits I'm afraid.

Will smaller tribes have some kind of benefit to offset the larger tribes body size advantage or do they just need to "get gud" and basically dark souls their way to victory (die a lot in other words).

Absolutely! Smaller tribes will have their own benefits. Remember that it's not all about the size that matters who is victorious, it's about anticipating your opponent's moves and making calculated and strategic decisions. First I would guess smaller tribe races burn less energy and hence need to eat/hydrate less. A large 7 foot tundra character I would venture a guess and say needs to eat big meals and drink a lot of water to sustain that large body stature. In combat, larger races probably have more strength but expand more energy performing moves such as sword swings, jabs, parrying/dodging. Smaller races can probably use the extra energy/speed to offset the lack of reach.

it would be nice to hear from the devs, I get it that smaller characters will have to rely on being faster but is being faster an actual trait they have, or is it just something they have to do because they can't take on larger tribes head to head.

Wouldn't the shorter folks at least get a strength advantage or something?

Why would they get a strength advantage?

Why would shorter characters be stronger? Less muscle is less muscle regardless of height.

Use the small stature to your advantage. Attack from stealth. Or duck that large swing and get inside where the tall attacker has no ability to thrust or slash with their blade. Meanwhile you'll have an easy target to attack in the form of the joints of their armor near their nether regions. A well placed stab there that hits their femoral artery and it is game over.
