I just looked at my inventory after a long time and its filled with stuff I am not familiar with ever getting for any reason (event or purchase), so I am just wondering if there is wrong...
I def don't remember ever getting a monkey.
There are rewards from events the last two years you would have gotten. You weren't required to do anything to get them.

It is as it's been said above.
Occasionally SbS runs promotional events, and some require participation to at least some degree to receive the community awards and some simply require your account to have existed while the rest of the community earned rewards that you also get the benefit of.

In fact not all rewards for all events have been distributed yet, and it's possible I may have overlooked a few, but you can read the above links to find out why you may have gotten some stuff such as a monkey :P
