Kickstarterversary: This Ship is Sailing!

By Serpentius

Hail Elyrians!

We're at the home stretch of our 2nd Kicktstarterversary! The final week is upon us so now is the time for you to decide how many milestones you will achieve together. Will the Mydarri appear at launch? Will you get a Mydarri write-up? (250k unpublished milestone). Only time will tell as we barrel towards the end of this event. Monitor the store tracker to see what bonus rewards have already been unlocked!

Milestones Achieved So Far:

  • Kypiq Party Pack
  • Purebread Horse
  • Pack Bonuses
  • Special Title
  • Otter Bear Cub (remains after event ends)
  • Otter Bear Mount (remains after event ends)
  • Mystery Box

Together as a community you have unlocked 7 of the milestones so far, what rewards will be won when the event is over? Are there holdovers who were waiting until the last week to make their purchases? We'll find out over the next few days!

Last week you achieved the Otterbear mount and seafaring options for war, click here to see what was added.

So with that I wish you good fortune on your quest; may your barrels be full of rum, and the wind be ever in your sails.

You're Gonna Need a Bigger Boat!

It wouldn't be a good Kickstarterversary if there weren't a few surprises. Speeding into port for sale until the end of May is this new beauty:

Coastal Cutter

A fast and light ship capable of carrying cargo, troops, or both!

(This image helps show the scale of the boat in comparison to a Neran-height figure)

To understand the volume of cargo this ship can hold, here's a below deck shot:

More angles of the Coastal Cutter:

The cutter isn't built for war or deep water, but its incredible agility in comparison to other ships often makes it the perfect choice for coastal patrols looking to discourage raiders. At the same time, its mast placement and sails can push the cutter to speeds that are hard to maintain for other ships, making it a popular choice among coastal traders looking for a ship that can outrun threats and outpace the competition.

A Fleet of Options

With our Kickstarterversary in its final week, there are quite a few items both new and old for you to choose from.

To assist the community in keeping track of the Community Rewards backers can earn throughout the month, we added this milestone progress bar.

To view details of which awards are given out after the end of the event versus those available in the store, please review the FAQ here.

Final Few Days!

This special promotional event continues for only 4 more days! and after that, all of the special items that were added to the store will be gone or return to the vault.

The promotions going back are:

  • Carriage for Two
  • The Love Boat
  • Buy the Farm
  • Otterbarge
  • Cottage for Two
  • War-on-a Boat

A la carte items returning to the vault:

  • 2250 EP Items
  • 3000 EP Items
  • Foxcelot Pet
  • Song Birds
  • Colony Starter Kit
  • Rowboat
  • River Barge
  • Coastal Raider
  • Coastal Cutter

Note: Pet Otterbear Cub and Otterbear Mount will remain since you unlocked them.

Don't be a scallywag, get to the store and snatch up some of these lovelies for yourself, before the hourglass runs out!

On behalf of the whole team at Soulbound Studios, thank you for your continued support!

haha...I was halfway through a paragraph typing up logical rebuttals to Barlin when I realized I was getting pulled in by the troll. Good call @DonovanDeCarrefour. All of the logical information for a game in development for less than 3 years is out there....those that just want to bitch and whine will do so. No need for me to waste half a hour writing 2 pages of logical breakdown with links when trolls won't care. They just use illogical arguments to attack from a different angle.

Donovan_De_Carrefour - 1 year ago

Its a waste of time trying to explain anything to 'Barlin'. One has to guess from his starting date, the number of posts and lack of any shown investment that he is a troll. He likely has another character that is is real grumble butt but this is the little sniping troll he created because he feels under-informed and uncared for. You can explain things to him till your blue in the face but until he feels he has made enough other people unhappy he will continue. So best to just ignore him.

Barlin - 1 year ago
@Donovan_De_Carrefour:

well, its my point of view. You can believe I am a troll, I don t care. I think its a weird attitude from the devs and many explanations make no sense. I can t believe noone seems to care. Instead people try to find excuses and defend the devs abandoning every bit of critical thinking like some religious fanatics.

I hope for everyone here, including me, that this game will be successfully developed. I will check the news from time to time but won t put anymore money in this game anytime soon.

This is no child's play but a several million dollar heavy business.

In this sense, actions speak louder than words

The event ended several days ago and still no news from the devs ? Did they run off with the money ???

Given that the event ended on Friday I would guess they probably took the weekend off for a well deserved break.

Barlin - 1 year ago
@Davepoleon:

well, there was plenty of time before and after the weekend - Unless they went Friday home at 12 and started today at 10.30+ (which would also be pretty weird for a game company)

It takes no time to write something like " Congratulations and thank you to our community. After your struggle on the last miles we are happy to announce that you have reached the old souls goal. For more details check the news next week. We wish all a good weekend"

But they just left without saying anything.

The kickstarter-project started 2 years ago and so far I haven t seen any of the promised features. So its all talk or just some pictures showing some random stuff that can easily be put together in a 2d or 3d program. The money needed for this project was said under 1 million $ at the beginning (which is impossible unless people work for free) but went up to several millions needed. I bought a package in the shop- but I have to say, I find this higly suspicious and I am not sure what to make out of it.

Have you even really been watching since the first kickstarter though? Your forum avatar says you've only been a member since May 2018. And given the intense negativity you're spouting in your posts you seem more like a corporate troll trying to spread negativity to undermine this company than an actually interested member of the community.

Chronicles of Elyria is still in active development, it hasn't changed, nor to my knowledge have the "developers ran off with the money."

In Kickstarter, it had the minimum requirement for funds to generate a seed round to help set up the foundation, then from there seek additional outside funding as the game progresses in development from community support. Video games, especially on the level what CoE is trying to achieve as a MEOW (Massive Evolving Online World) will take time to develop, and require funds to even get anywhere. Employees must be paid, medical insurances set up for them, not to mention all the various fees in licensing, software, bills, etc. It all costs money.

If you are not sure on where you find yourself regarding CoE, and your concerns/suspicions, then I suggest to wait. Take a step back and watch the progress of the game as it develops further and have more to show, there is no harm in waiting. It costs you nothing, but time. :)

@Xeyska:

I know (from experience) how much work it is to make games - and so did the guy who started the kickstarter campaign. But as far as I know he didn t say on kickstarter that he will need several million dollars later to even be able to start the basic game - if he did he would probably have had a much harder time gathering enough money.

It is as it is and they got several millions even though they didn tfind a publisher (btw- who will do the publishing stuff now?). The next thing they did was to hire lots of people- just to realize they won t be able to pay them for long. So they fired them.

Its been 2 years and no real content is shown. The screenshots show the world they are building - considering the crappy assets shown and no concept art of the environment exist thats pretty weird. Even weirder is the usage of the ElyriaMUD client. No other developers are using stuff like that since there is no need to and it only costs extra money and time. To me it looks like a second product (for the handy market ?)

Regarding the actual situation - I have spend money on several pre-alpha/alpha-games but I have never seen a dev starting a fund-raising event/anniversary-event where they gathered several hundred thousand dollars and then just leave without saying a word for several days- that is not normal. Does such behaviour sound like a professional game company working on a multi-million-dollar-project to you ?

If something like that happens in real life u would call the police and not say stuff like "there is no harm in waiting".

I really want this game to be developed successfully - but what I see doesn t give me the feeling that it will work out.

@Barlin:

I can't tell if you're a community member who is sincerely concerned about the state of the game or a bitter critic looking to sow dissent by tailoring the narrative to fit your goals, but either way, you're omitting some very important details that the studio has brought to light in regards to this situation.

If we take a look at your first point:

I know (from experience) how much work it is to make games - and so did the guy who started the kickstarter campaign. But as far as I know he didn t say on kickstarter that he will need several million dollars later to even be able to start the basic game - if he did he would probably have had a much harder time gathering enough money.

Reading this, it seems that you're well aware of the situation, but I'll take the time to iterate nonetheless–as you appear to be ignoring some rather significant details.

From the end of 2016 to the end of 2017 we nearly doubled in staff, however that team size was never intended to be sustainable without the long-term aid of a publisher or investor. In their absence, and as a result of our change in focus back to crowdfunding, we adjusted our resources accordingly so as to be sustainable solely through sales from our online store. Unfortunately this meant parting ways with a few of our team members. This was painful for all of us as we had developed a close bond with everyone in the studio, but it was a necessary action to move forward at the velocity and cost we need to succeed.

In regards to studio finances, we are now able to sustain development at our current size without the need for a publisher or investor. We plan on continuing crowdfunding for the foreseeable future so that we can maintain creative control of the game, and ultimately deliver the promise of Chronicles of Elyria.

By Caspian's account, there have been a great deal of publishers interested in the game, even since the end of 2016, but at that time, they simply weren't prepared to make that step forward. When that time did eventually come, and the studio began actively engaging with these publishers, there were a lot of choices to be made, choices that could've meant sacrificing core parts of what construed the "heart" of CoE. Unfortunately, the loss of potential publishers in an effort to retain the studio's goals for the game also meant a re-evaluation of their finances which, in turn, meant letting go a few employees.

In Caspian's July 2017 State of Elyria post, he references the "Cone of Uncertainty." I could take my hand at explaining this concept, but Caspian's already done a good job of it:

...if I were realistically one day from completing a task I'd be able to say with a high degree of certainty that the task will be completed "tomorrow." On the other hand, if I were a year from completing a task, it would be extremely difficult to say with any sort of confidence the precise date the task would be completed on. To have any sort of confidence in my estimate I'd have to provide a date with a high degree of variance; say, "some time within this 30-day period."

Before this, under Timeline vs. Schedules, he explains the issues that arose after they had given their initial estimate of 18 months of active development.

We continued to have only a single engineer from May until December of 2016. That had a huge impact on our ability to maintain our intended development schedule.

Moving onto this:

Its been 2 years and no real content is shown. The screenshots show the world they are building - considering the crappy assets shown and no concept art of the environment exist thats pretty weird. Even weirder is the usage of the ElyriaMUD client. No other developers are using stuff like that since there is no need to and it only costs extra money and time. To me it looks like a second product (for the handy market ?)

Clearly, you haven't been keeping up with the countless updates since the Kickstarter–I mean, that was clear from the beginning, but it's even more clear here.

First off, we may not have a great deal of in-game footage, but we've gotten enough for a glimpse into what the world-gen system is capable of, evident in A Year of Foundation. With the Crafting Redux and Vye's Communication DJ we get detailed explanations of two core game mechanics that have clearly been iterated on since their introduction a couple years ago.

You then bring up ElyriaMUD–which, for future reference, is now called VoxElyria. VoxElyria is CoE, albeit in a much simpler visual format. It's purpose is to put those systems in players' hands as soon as possible and allow them to be tested and iterated on for implementation in the final game long before players first get their hand on the Unreal version.

The benefits to us in having ElyriaMUD cannot be overstated. To begin with, developing the back-end workers and gameplay mechanics of Chronicles of Elyria against a light-weight, voxel based client means we can develop and test our mechanics in the absence of fancy animations, graphics, or user interfaces. This speeds up development of core mechanics A TON. And, with the way the server is sitting now, this will allow us to roll out new mechanics faster than anyone has seen before, and way faster than people anticipate.

But let's get on with your final point–the Kickstarter-versary.

I have very little to say on that. The event ended on the weekend. We got a post about it the following Monday. The rudiments of this argument are flimsy at best. If the event was over on any other weekday, I might've agreed with you, but on a busy Friday afternoon, I don't expect them to come out with a post on the fly. That's just me though.

Barlin - 1 year ago
@Artsykidd:

"We got a post about it the following Monday" where is the post. I checked this side daily and didn t see any news. It is the 6. June here and I still haven t seen any infos so far. And even on a busy Friday afternoon it shouldn t be asked too much for a company to take 2 minutes to write something about the end of a month long fund-raising campaign/event.

" voxel based client means we can develop and test our mechanics in the absence of fancy animations, graphics, or user interfaces. " visual doesn t matter for code testing. The two engines are completely different - voxel based vs polygon based. Also the pipelines are probably really different. Working with a second engine and making assets for an completely different graphic system saves time ? Why ? I find that hard to understand- especially when watching the updates clips showing the assets + animation implemented in unreal.

Ps.: just had a thought, the unreal engine is free nowadays. Only after the profits reach some line does the developer have to pay some percentage to the devs of the unreal engine. Someone with more knowledge, is it about this ? does the kickstarter and shop-money count ?

"With the Crafting Redux and Vye's Communication DJ we get detailed explanations of two core game mechanics" It is basically a pitch of an idea. nothing finished or implemented, not even WIP - except for the youtube stuff shown on the 3. May post. But thats only basic-stuff. If thats all they have after 2 years that would be a freaking joke

"We continued to have only a single engineer from May until December of 2016. That had a huge impact on our ability to maintain our intended development schedule." what engineer ??? There are the coders, the art department, game design and basically mangement. A game company with only one coder ? how is that possible, especially after raising money ?

"Timeline vs. Schedules" The game is a big project that takes often millions of dollars and years to finish. The project is broken down into tasks for every department. Every task has a timelimit (for example making the 3D char model 4 days, half a day texturing, animation ect.) to make it easier to calculate the time and money needed and, if necessary, to adjust plans. There are people (the "taskmaster") who do this stuff, gather the assets plan the time needed ect..It is a big part of their job. This is used EVERYWHERE in the game business to make it possible to say with a "high degree of certainty" when tasks are ready. So the game is not a task but broken down to tasks- and they can give updates on that like every other dev.

"18 months of active development" and even under one million Dollar - with only one coder ? As far as I know the guys behind this project are from within the buisiness - so they knew that this is impossible to achieve.

"I can't tell if you're a community member who is sincerely concerned about the state of the game or a bitter critic looking to sow dissent by tailoring the narrative to fit your goals" its a game BUSINESS, not a religion. What counts are facts. Fact is we are customers here and we should ask questions.

Some guy describes you the idea of a flying car very detailed and says he can build it in only 18 months and less then a million dollars even though noone else can. Some time after he corrects himself. Several investors were interested in the project but the oversight/conditions that come with millions of dollars didn t fit in with this guys vision- so he decides to do it all alone, not only building it but also the marketing part. To do that he only needs several millions more - from you. You decide to invest. He gets the money and starts working. In the following 2 years he shows you some drawn pictures (doesn t matter if 2D or 3D) but has no working prototype, and not one part of the car is finished. He says to test the technology behind the flying car he needs to build a car on wheels first to test it. He starts another fundraising campaign but vanishes afterwards without a word. You haven t heard from him for days now - as an investor, should you ask questions or not ?

Have you all received your rewards at this point? I bought a package pretty late into it(talking probably hours before it was over), but the milestone tracker was still up. The items aren't in my inventory though(I also looked in the store since they said it might be there somehow).

So, here's the question. Did we get the old souls or not. With the Kickstarter, we saw the numbers go down and then up as people didn't follow through on payments or the payment was declined and things like that. The tracker is gone and we have yet to receive the official word from SBS.

And yes, I might have been more interested in boats if I knew that I had a coastline. It would be silly to buy a boat and then be landlocked.

There is a big differenc between kickstarters and the CoE Shop: In the moment you buy something in the CoE Shop, you paid for instantly, without the right to get a refund. If you do some shady stuff to get your money back, you will get trouble with their Payment Provider, Xsolla. In Kickstarter, you credit card get not instantly charged. The Money will be paid as soon as the campaign has finished. Some guys may have problems with their credit card and the money didnt get paid, but without much consequences. We get enough money for the old soul, Serpentius already confirmed this in discord

EmmaGoldenfeld - 1 year ago

Well, I think an extension is already off the table, as the event is over :) And Caspian explained in discord why they wouldn't do such a thing...

"Unfortunately we can't extend the promotion. It trains you guys not to trust promotion ending dates. Not a good plan. But, we'll have more promotions, etc. in the future. So there will be other opportunities to support us and get some cool stuff for Expo."

Arebs - 1 year ago

Even if I really want to see the Mydarri, I think a extension is a bad idea. Even if we want it, the public will think that SBS are Greedy and extend this event for more money. We should be happy that we get the Old souls in the last hour yesterday :D

Barlin - 1 year ago

Well, looks like we failed right before the good stuff... :( but hey, we got fireworks and the option to purchase ships even though we don t know whether or not we can use them...

how about one week extension ? I am getting money next week -.-

  • or just round the collected money up to the next highest reward. A shame about the rest rewards though :(

Many people get paid tomorrow being the first and a Friday? any thoughts of giving 1 more day extension?

That would be awesome. People bought so much during the last 36 hours, that we not only reached the "Upgraded Housing" but also the "Soul Pack". And now we also are half way through to the "Old Soul Pack", what I never thought possible with the limiting "Ship Theme".

Our favourite Devs, as you know, even the best things get delayed, be it your favourite game, or reaching an event goal. It would be a nice gesture, if SBS woud leave the last goal open, until it is finished soon™ <3

Magvad - 1 year ago

The intent was great, but the goals aren't going to inspire anyone to support the sale goals.

1) Boats are situational. Sure, dudes who think they are going to be on the coast may spam purchase them, but with perma-death a possibility and no real proof that sea travel will be worth the effort in the early game...I don't see it really panning out as a new item.

2) Mydarri as the main goal throughout seems a bit like giving us stuff for a future expansion when we don't even have the main game yet. It even states nobility can't even choose them at launch...which means those backing the most won't even get to benefit directly from the goal of the sale.

I really don't imagine anyone actually wants to reach the end goal as that means you are now throwing down more cash to throw in more stuff when we really just want the first stuff to be in the game.

Just promise us what you promised or at least just fill out how robust those items are, don't add more extraneous stuff to the already full plate. We will pay you more for more assets in game if they are to our liking. We don't need more content when kickstarters and indie studios are notorious for not being able to deliver the promised good. It's bad press.

Gozirra - 1 year ago

Boats are awesome and all, but with not knowing where I will be at launch (if I will be by a large enough body of water to support boats/rafts/ships) I just can't get behind these. Here to hoping for some land based (maybe town based) stuff next! Still looking forward to this amazing game!

Wolfguarde - 1 year ago

Lots of good points from both sides of the debate. I was really hoping to see us hit the Old Soul milestone, hopefully SbS will consider adding it into another promotion somewhere down the track.

There's nothing inherently wrong with the nautical theme, save for its timing. Nobody's going to get it right every time, and the best that can be done is to learn from what happens and move on. I wasn't able to pitch in on this one, but I'm looking forward to seeing what other promotions bring to the table.

Dekul - 1 year ago

It's a lot to ask to have them change the planned theme/items mid stream but would have been nice to have them offer to let us cash the boat in for EP or something in the case we wind up somewhere that it is unusable. That probably would have made people a lot more free with their wallet regarding buying digital boats...

Hieronymus - 1 year ago

So SBS did boats this month. They've been doing promos fairly regularly though and this isn't the end of promos.

I really like the reward system and tracker because it gives us interesting targets to achieve. It's a really good model, regardless of how much more this month's (or any month's) promos could have yielded, and I hope we see more of this approach in the future, not just for kickstarterversaries. :)

markof - 1 year ago

@Tiffany I did not took your post personally, it just happen that you are the one that made i. true you voiced what a sizable part of the community think, which does not make it any more true.

most of those feelings are coming from ideas like you can read in Heartagram and WarlanderLichbane's posts.

The thing is that no one is saying every body will have equal access to sea or/and river throughout the starting continent. Not at all, places will not have access to the sea and lots of places will not be anywhere close to a navigable river if a river at all.

What is true on the other hand is that on the globality of the starting continent there should be enough domains either on sea shore or in contact with a navigable river for all those that wish to select such a place to be able to.

Which means that deciding to buy a boat is a choice, a choice that limit your choices of domain to select when domain selection will come. Sure if you planned to be a Hrothi and you know that the duchy you expect to be in expressed the intention to be a subterranean one, chances that you'll be able to use your boat are slim, but if those are the driver of your choice than do not buy a boat. But if you really want that boat, then that will be your driver for domain selection and there is close to no chance that you will not find somewhere on the continent, a place where to use it.

It is all about choices, choices people make them self and that bound them. Do not wish to be bound, fine, do not make the choice.

The problem is not to know if you spent money or not or if the selected theme was catering to a large enough part of the community. The problem is people saying it is too hard to buy a boat because we do not know yet where our characters will be in the game. Those that bought the boats know, they know they made choices either that their driver for domain selection will be that they now possess a boat they want to use or that they bought a boat that they know and accept they might not be able to use.

It is fine to not be able to potentially waste the amount of money represented by those boats, it is fine to say that my community is my main driver and as such i do not know where i'll be and as i'm not want to waste money i'm not going to buy the boat, fine, but choices too.

If there had not be any other object or pack to buy, that would have been an acceptable concern. because why to be concerned about items sold during an event if not because you want to support the game and might not be able to because no option to do so is provided ? Don't feel like buying it, do not buy it, "had i knew i would end up on the coast i would have totally bought one!" not fine, either make the choice or give oneself a opportunity to make it later by buying EP. Will boats be in the EP store ? if boats are available in the EP store, what type of boat will it be, the same as during the event, others, more, less ? and finally will boats in the EP store be more or less expensive than the event ones ?

I do not know, maybe, people with concern could have asked that questions anytime during the last weeks, but what i know is that blaming the theme of the event makes no sens, people were free and offered plenty of options, buy or not buy, buy the event items or EP, all was on the table.

All i say is that the Theme is not to blame, nothing is to blame, but if people really want to blame something then the only thing that make sens to blame is them self.

@Markof, I really don't know why you took my post so personally, but you should keep in mind that what I said certainly made sense to a fair number of people or it wouldn't have as many upvotes as it does.

I do want to address one thing you said:

you did not wished to put in money, fine, but do not blame anyone but yourself, because you are the only reason that prevented you from buying things

I did spend money during this event. I used $29 store credit and spent an additional $31 of my money. Store credit counts towards the promotion, so that's $60 total.

That said, it was coincidental that it was during this event. I bought the expanded colors + sigils for heraldry. Originally I was hoping maybe there'd be some kind of discounts or sales during the promotion, but Caspian made it pretty clear on discord that there wouldn't be and the prices we see now are the lowest they'll ever be and prices on everything will only go up. So that's why I ended up buying.

I'll also say that just because someone doesn't spend more money doesn't make them any less. Not everyone has disposable income to spare.

And I don't know if you were assuming that I was making my post as some kind of complaint that there wasn't anything that I personally wanted - but I wasn't. I was representing the sentiment I'd been feeling from the community at large, and the overall implications of what that meant. My intent was to provide meaningful feedback to Soulbound.

Edit: I wasn't around when this conversation happened in Discord but since it was mentioned in this thread I felt like it'd be a good idea to drop it here for posterity:

Caspian - Yesterday at 11:03 AM @SirApetus - Ursaphant Whisperer Heh. Well, we made the mistake of making our kickstarterversay themed. We really worked hard on trying to bring the Mydarri, and as such well... let's say the fourth week, and final item,... floats. :CaspianFacepalm:

Caspian - Yesterday at 11:05 AM @Count Vestan Drake It takes far more work than people think to create assets and items, make sure the mechanics are vetted, etc. for the items we add to the store. We can't just change plans 2 weeks in and expect the team of artists to be able to deliver high quality items.

Caspian - Yesterday at 11:06 AM We learned a valuable lesson about breadth vs. depth this Kickstarterversary. Next year we'll go for a wider theme if we have one.

Caspian - Yesterday at 11:06 AM Not much can be done about it now. But we hope you guys had fun and enjoyed the theme none-the-less. If we were a bigger team with more resources we could have done more, but we're happy the results and glad you guys got to see some boats finally.

Caspian - Yesterday at 11:07 AM Now, we just sit back and see what we can achieve in the final week with no more items being added to the store.

Count Vestan Drake - Yesterday at 11:21 AM well i think it's safe to say we'll get to at least $250k to get the upgraded housing and mydarri writeup. We are only a couple thousand short of the mystery gift right now

Esoba - Yesterday at 11:22 AM Oh yeah, I can't imagine us not hitting housing.

Caspian - Yesterday at 11:22 AM I can.

Caspian - Yesterday at 11:23 AM Only 4 days remains. But I wish you all luck.

Caspian - Yesterday at 11:25 AM I was hoping you guys would hit the Old Soul. Kinda nice to have those seeded to the oldest backers rather than just randomly assigned.

Having now read that, my personal advice to SbS is this:

The game's release is still ~2 years off (late 2019 estimate to early 2020). So you don't need to ensure that items you put in the store are ready for release now. You could just put up a drawing/concept art of the thing people are to buy, and just make sure it's finished prior to the game's launch. This would give you a bit more freedom in situations like this, and not rush you into developing stuff specifically for a promotion.

That said, if you take this route you will need to make sure it's included when the game launches. So I'd suggest only doing things you know that you're going to develop prior to launch, and not stretch things that you might not end up having time for.

We totally appreciate your grace, understanding and leeway. I agree pixels are cheaper than polys in a lot of ways, but pixels don't always raise the right questions or provide all of the answers that we run into when doing the full asset. When we can interact with it, even in a limited capacity, it allows us to vet and iterate on the content in a much more precise, thoughtful and meaningful way. It opens up conversations and allows us to make concrete decisions with more confidence that the final end result with meet all of our expectations and game play goals.

So for example: Staring at a drawing of your house, vs standing in your living room. Then imagine having the power to push out a wall, make a reading nook and add an indoor tree fort. When you where staring at the concept, you didn't think you needed that stuff, but now that it's there you can't imagine it working without it.

Not only does it allow us to build out our content creation pipeline, by forcing us to think about vert counts, shaders and the nuts and bolts mechanical pieces, but it opens up conversations and discussions that help inform design decisions which in turn helps us build out our creation pipeline in a way that is agile and open to iteration.

When we take a concept to the asset stage we have to rectify dynamic perspective and fuzzy inconvenient details. Often we find out things in the early block out stage that can have drastic changes on the overall design of the object.

If we only published concepts, we can get locked into an implied design that might not be optimal or, it has to be drastically altered to work with specific game play goals and mechanics.

Boats are something we've always planned on having in game. Weather we make the content now or later is fairly inconsequential, it all has to be made. I'd rather do it now when we have the time and available talent, than push it off for "future us" to deal with. We gained a lot of valuable insight and it helped us push our content creation process to be more robust and agile.

There are still a great deal of unkowns. The coast line figures are quite misleading as well. Much of it assumes that the continent is perfectly rectangular which it wont be. The landscape will be generated and there really is no knowing what to expect. The other factor being that all those counties have to fit into the kingdom grid structure. Which means that some of that space simply will be in the ocean. Some of it will be unuseable space like rocky shores, cliffs, or otherwise mountainous terrain that is not condusive to city building. Just like not all that terrain inland can be built upon. So you would then assume that there will be prime and sub prime coastal counties in which you can actually build a city or port city on.

If you have already dedicated your county to any particular play style before domain selection you will buy it no matter what even it it means you end up with a sub prime seaside, riverside, or lakeside location in which you may or may not end up with the location you intend after the ep selections are over. The best bet you can take is to buy the ep over any of the trinkets offered this time around.

You would expect there to be some degree of a selection of ships at launch, but sailing was supposed to be this tech locked research driven economical resource that kept us bound to the continent. It was supposed to be this special thing, or at least it used to be.

There should have been a dev journal on sailing as well as how each it owned, opperated, and maintained, as well as stored. They should have also shown clips of each of the ships in action. It was poor planning not to.

And besides they should have released them all at the same time. They baited people into buying sub par options of the low tech versions and releasing the only real options later which was pretty shady. Why would you even buy anything other than the coastal cutter or the otter barge? Everything else is going to be out runned or out gunned by faster vessels and cargo rainging ships...

Also where where the fishing vessels? Sure you can case a fishing pole over the side of any of them but where are the ships which will support the amount of food a port city will need to feed their people? And cargo ships are supposed to be slow going and defended by warships, yet you made the cargo ship a light weight fast sailing vessel that now becomes the only means to fight fire with fire.

All in all this whole event was a sham for most people. If they actually offered things that were not gimmacy they probably would have hit their goal and exceeded it if they would have planned and executed it properly. But at this point many people are just waiting for actual news and videos and gameplay footage to make honest and informed decisions. The only people still paying money are those too hyped to wait and those whales who just want to rule with no other equals.

What Markof is trying to say is that due to the current numbers of pledgers being still fairly small compared to the overall number of available domains on the starting continent, the large majority of the people should have the ability to choose a settlement/county that as important waterways or coastal access (I'm sure you all understood what he was saying but just wanted to say I agree ^^).

Though, if you plan to play on a mountain or in a desert then you should be consistent with your planned gameplay and avoid such objects (even if in both these examples I'm fairly sure you can get a settlement that has what you want).

Just spend your money guys, stop pretending that you need it. 😂

All I'm saying is; look at the transport section, 4 boats and a wagon. If SBS wanted us to buy more than a wagon, we should at least been made sure to have access to water. No silent hint, but a confirmation that I can play Hrothi or Kypiq and still have access to water.

Sorry, I'm not taking your word for it.

Exactly, we should not be put in a situation where we can buy event items based only on speculations that there will be x rivers and x coastal towns. We need more facts and less fairy tales. I think deserts will have less rivers and water reservoirs as the whole ecosystem is based on our world. So telling people that everyone will have equal acces to the waters is stupid.

Thank you SBS for this amazing month. The boats are really cool, and I hope I'll be able to purchase them again later if it turns out I have need of them (perhaps through EP or if they return after domain selection). I was able to upgrade to Countess as well as stock up on EP during this event, and am happy for that.

Again, thank you, and congratulations on the anniversary! 😁💖

kajoreh - 1 year ago

Not to nitpick either, but maybe the reason they may be just selling boats is because boats are all they have got to sell right now.

It is a little studio that is also trying to put together an entire game at the same time.

I'm honestly hoping these are quick side projects that they are knocking out to turn some quick cash/keep interest up and not the main focus of their daily efforts. A nice bonus, but not that big a deal. If they are really important to keeping this ship afloat, then we are all looking at some bigger trouble.

I would be really surprised if they themselves thought that it would be going to get all the way to the Mydarri either, but the more cash the better, so why would you limit the top end at 250k?

Khazad - 1 year ago

Unfortunately can't justify buying anything like this until domain selection, might be nowhere near a coast. Fingers crossed for some land-based stuff whenever the next sale is!

Right. What percentage of people will live in coastal locations where a larger boat is necessary? 10%? Maybe 20% since population tends to be larger in towns and cities near the coasts? And of those coastal location dwellers how much time during a life will most spend on a boat? Boats are a critical item at times but I'd wager most people are looking to spend money on items they can use more often or are more permanent (land, housing).

I can tell you right now we won't be hitting $500k for Mydarri at launch. We might reach Upgraded Housing at $250k. I would be extremely surprised if we get to Old Souls at $350k.

I can tell you that because you're still pushing boats. I think that you all as a company need to reflect on whether trying to push out information should really be done in an event designed to get funding for your company, or if there might be a better way to do that. Like say... a DJ.

A lot of people that would be spending money on this event aren't because they either aren't interested in boats or don't even know that they would be able to use a boat if they bought one. Not everyone will have access to a river, even if there are plenty of rivers (as you all seem to be strongly implying), and I would say certainly most won't have access to the coast.

So I would recommend diversifying your promotions in the future to optimize the funding that you bring in, given how that is the inherent purpose behind these events. It's fine to have boats... just have some land stuff too, and maybe some non-specific location stuff. Just don't put all your eggs in one basket, y'know?

I'm not saying this to criticize... I want you guys to succeed and funding is pretty critical to your success.

You do realize what you are saying make no sens ?

There is no way anything they offer in a promotion is going to please everyone because we are diverse and our interests are wide.

So yes the objects of this event might not be for you , or you still might not have understood as domain selection is supposed to happen and cling to the rotten idea that domain selection is driven by community, whatever the reason why the particular items sold are not for you, SBS thought about you, they also offered EP, the well known 3 000 pack for 200$ and a new one easier to buy, the 2 250 pack for 150$ all the way with the traditional EP options, so while the particular themed objects might not be for you, you still have access to EP and EP will buy you anything you want when the store will open.

The promotions going back are:

  • Carriage for Two
  • ~~The Love Boat~~
  • Buy the Farm
  • ~~Otterbarge~~
  • Cottage for Two
  • ~~War-on-a Boat~~

A la carte items returning to the vault:

  • 2250 EP Items
  • 3000 EP Items
  • Foxcelot Pet
  • Song Birds
  • Colony Starter Kit
  • ~~Rowboat~~
  • ~~River Barge~~
  • ~~Coastal Raider~~
  • ~~Coastal Cutter~~

As you can see of the 15 things available in this event 7 are boats and 8 are not and of those 8 2 are EP packs that can turn into whatever you want, granted one is bloodline at least, so upgrading is also an option... an option i nearly forgot to mention, the courtier pack was back also!!!

So while the specific items are naval themed, the options were as wide and diverse are the community is, you did not wished to put in money, fine, but do not blame anyone but yourself, because you are the only reason that prevented you from buying things, no other reason make sens as you had plenty of other options. And by the way you still have a few days to.

Made perfect sense to me. I bet people would buy more if there weren't so many boats. I personally was hoping for some blue prints of houses, and not just stuff that you have to place in the world around you, while you maybe don't even have the infrastructure to use it all.

Made perfect sense to me. I bet people would buy more if there weren't so many boats. I personally was hoping for some blue prints of houses, and not just stuff that you have to place in the world around you, while you maybe don't even have the infrastructure to use it all.

As i said, that make no sens at all, you want blue prints, fine, what if those blue prints were of things you do not care about ? or others do not care about ?

No object will ever satisfy 100% of the people, but EP can do it, there will probably be blue prints in the EP store, buy EP get ready. All the previous and future events will have the same drawback, whatever the items they can not satisfy 100% of the community.

Now about the "maybe i wont have the infrastructure" thing. The starting continent will be 96 x 192 km which means we can approximate that:

a x 2a = 1728 1728 is the total number of counties

so a, the number of counties per "row", assuming the continent is a rectangle and counties are small squares (all approximations for the sake of easy calculation), is 29

if a is 29 it means that 170 counties will be coastal ( (6 x a) -4) i'm assuming that easily as many counties will have access to a navigable river as those are natural boundaries between kingdoms and duchies inside those kingdoms, so an other 170

SBS said that so far they had sold approximately 25% of all the available counties, if those are split more or less evenly, it means each server will have around 432 player run counties .

So if 340 counties are water bound and 432 are player run, it means that 78 % of the player run counties can be water bound. Just like it was said and explained for the settlements, their will probably be more than enough water bound counties for everyone, they might not be were people wish them to be!

Once again the only argument that make sens is people are limiting them self. You want to buy those items, whatever the reason might be ( to support the game, in order to re-sell them later , to gift them, because you like them and they fit your dream play style...), buy them, you will be able to use them the way you want , IF you give yourself the opportunity to.

If you let others decide for you what you can and will do it's your own fault, not the item's fault.

Elyria is extremely large, the starting continent is large, and chances are there is enough of whatever people might want for all those that want it, somewhere in it. To get it all you need to do is select it, if you don't, it's your choice alone, not the world's, not SBS's, yours only.

You know Caspian already admitted on discord, that he could see doing this theme was a mistake. But couldn't change it midway through either. Since then everyone would quickly have to work on something, which of course takes too much time. While also saying next time would be focused more broadly.

So while I do agree with you, it's not something SBS doesn't already know.

While he also said there is a few hundred thousand locked up in layaways. But the majority of those don't look like they be paid off. So if most people paid those off, even a boat theme wouldn't have stopped us from getting close to 500k.

Instead of just boats, they could have made a theme around transportation in general. From mounts, carts and wagons to boats and ships.

But Caspian already said on Discord, that a theme around water transport wasn't the best idea and that they will do better next time.
