The Moonrest Astronomical Society is an organization dedicated to the observation of the stars and the deciphering of their meanings on the whole of Elyria.

For the purpose of surveying the skies in the most reliable fashion, Moonrest aims to construct an observatory to house the most powerful telescope technologically achievable, the crafting facilities to continuously push that technology, and a library for compiling both information related to the society’s focus and findings.

Services

Due to the limited knowledge of the Astronomy skill in Chronicles of Elyria, the only confirmed services Moonrest is currently offering are seasonal forecasts to be delivered to patrons at regular intervals and maintaining the Elyrian calendar.

Depending on future developer information, which we are working hard to divine through the stars, Moonrest may eventually provide services such as (but not limited to):

  • Forecasting weather patterns and seasonal changes via regular messages, sent to the in-game location of your choosing
  • Teaching navigation techniques
  • Keeping precise time in Elyria
  • Crafting personalized time-pieces
  • Public-works projects, such as outdoor clocks and clock towers for your cities and towns

Structure

Moonrest has no formal structure based on ranking or seniority, consisting instead of three branches (Astronomers, Crafters & Scribes) based upon necessary responsibilities of the society. In addition, the observatory will be maintained by an administrator known as the 'Key Observer', though this role has no special privileges beyond the basic management of the facility.

All members are not only equal in status, but not limited to working in any one branch.

Astronomers

Stargazers Whom Parse The Heavens

Duties: Observe and provide documentation of astronomical findings.

Crafters

Talented Tinkerers And Driven Professionals

Duties: Researching new technologies and maintaining the society's tools.

Scribes

Dedicated Keepers, Recorders & Messengers

Duties: Maintaining the observatory library, compiling astronomical findings into reports and sending messages.

Hi En, have you decided where you want to settle down? If not, you might want to check out the Free City Nordhausen. We provide the land for free and you don't need to pay any county taxes. https://chroniclesofelyria.com/forum/topic/8013/na-city-seeks-citizens-guilds-no-county-tax

Hello, Kant. I've been following Nordhausen for a while now and I have to say, I love the model you're using. I'm a countess myself, so I do have my own land to work with. Still, if you're open to speak about it, I could find you over discord.

Great post En, looking forward to see what your Society does in game. If you are ever in the Kingdom of Kairos, more specifically the Duchy of Mordrivale; please look up my architecture guild. We'd love to join in on projects where we can help you out.

Thank you, Troy! Once we have a few things sorted out on our end, I'd love to speak with you about a few public works projects. I'm hoping the nature of this organization have a bit of a philanthropic flair when it comes to that sort of thing.

Though recruitment is still closed at the time, the Moonrest Acstronomical Society encourages both prospective members and governing bodies to join our discord and see what we have to offer!

“The pursuit of knowledge is a wasted effort if inadequate measures are taken to preserve it”

Astronomy - October 7th/8th

Draco the Dragon, the constellation between the Big and Little Dippers, will be the focal point of the Draconid meteor shower tonight and tomorrow.

This shower, best viewed at dusk, favors the Northern Hemisphere and is expected to be most prominent on the 7th (though only expect handful of slow-moving meteors per hour)

I love the banner in your first post!

I love this idea! I'm thinking of creating a life preservation group dedicated to protect plants and animals from extinction.

Thank you, Biotech! I lovingly craft (painfully muddle through) all of the graphics I use, so it means a lot.

And that's a great idea, Angelayline! I really wish you the best in all of your guild-based endeavors!

Astronomy Updates

[Week of 10/14]

Tonight, be sure not to miss the moon's waxing into a rare Super Hunter's Moon on the 15th and 16th!

This moon is characterized by an earlier than normal moon-rise shortly after sunset and red-ish orange hue as a result of it's place on the early evening horizon. To top it all off, 2016's sole Hunter's Moon is also a Supermoon, meaning the moon will be at it's closest orbit to earth, resulting in a larger and brighter moon.

The Hunter's Moon is the first full moon following the autumnal equinox (contrary to the full 'Harvest Moon' seen before it). Be sure not to miss this unique celestial occurrence, visible from the 14th, but really shining on the 15th-16th!

Quick Update

[10/20]

On October 20th, we will likely see the peak of the annual Orionid meteor shower! Expect roughly 10-15 meteors an hour if you're able to view the sky from dark enough location, though moonglare from the waning gibbous may cause some interference.

Like most showers, the best time for viewing will be between midnight and dawn, so happy hunting!

Astronomy Updates

[Week of 10/21]

On October 24th (and every evening until the coming March), Look for Venus in the sky just after sunset before it sinks below the horizon.

As the third brightest celestial object in the sky behind the sun and moon, it will likely appear as the first star-like object visible in the early night sky.
